' 'V ,--.. - -'ffuf Y-:uf , -il 31,57-'V '. .1 XX DEDICATIUN MR BILL E1 NICARTHUR AND IARS LTHEL LICARTHUR We the Senlor Class gratefully dedlcate tlus thxrd lssue of GEM S QEMS m frue appreclatlon of the servlces they haxe rendered our school The Semor Class Z ACULTY cn' 7 lr lcirthur Hrs llclrthur llr Johnson FACULTY 1 .i 4 N., 'The House of Lurning fs.. it-X Mrs Souders Mrs Edie llrBoary Hrs Plraons llrs Wolf O O I R S - 4 ADMINISTRATION The Gem Consolidated School has been well served through the unselfish gxvmg of their thought time and effort by Mr j R Lanmng Director Mr Ray Flanagm Clerk and Mr C Ernest Ziegelmeler Treasurer who have composed the school board Always they have worked for the advancement of the school not only for the present but for the future The teaching staff mcludes Mr B111 E McArthur Superintendent and commerce Mrs Ethel McArthur grade and hlgh school music Mr Robert E Beery English Biology and coaching Mrs Mlldred B Parsons Social Science and Latin Mr Dean E johnson seventh and eighth grades Mrs Clara Souders fifth and sixth grades Mrs Olive Edie third and fourth grades and Mrs Thelma Wolf nrst and second grades Mr john Bond is completing his nmeteenth year in keeping our building and grounds 1n tip top conditlon Hls services cannot be minimized This year james Bond has been bus mechanic and driver with Charles Hopson the other driver transport pupils to other towns for our athletic sports In the lunchroom Mrs Agnes Davis and Mrs john Bond have seen to our hav ing balanced lunches on the dot tasteful and pleasmgly served Mr and Mrs McArthur and Mrs Edie are teaching their thlrd year in the Gem Consolidated School They have especially enjoyed the fme attitude of the pupils and the close cooperation and support of the patrons of the community Mr Robert E Berry comes from the neighboring town of Selden He complet ed high school and grades there and took an A B degree from Fort Hays Kansas State College Mrs Mildred B Parsons claims Salma as her home town There she went to high school and took an A B degree from Kansas Wesleyan College She has additional college work from Kansas University Kansas State Teachers College of Emporia and Fort Hays Kansas State College Mr Dean johnson is getting his first teaching experience here in the seventh and eighth grades He IS a graduate of the Rexford High School and has taken his college work at Kansas Wesleyan College at Salma Mrs Clara Souders has lived ln the Hlgh Plains region most of her life She was originally from Selden and met the man who became her husband when she went to Sherman County to teach in a rural school Now with her own boys raised she has returned to the teaching field to assist during the shortage of teachers, much to the benefit of the Gem School Mrs Souders has taken her college work at Fort Hays Kansas State College Mrs Thelma Wolf is a Sherman County girl She graduated from the Sherman Community High School at Goodland Here she took the normal training course and began teaching upon graduation from high school When she married and moved to Colby with her husband Dale Wolf Gem was fortunate to secure her for teacher of the first two grades. I ! 1 I - . -. n PROPI-IECY One evemng m the sprlng of 59 I was readmg my dally copy of the Los Angeles Txmes when I came across an artlcle about Admxral Bob Havlce s darmg explomts ln the South Pacxflc and I began wondermg what my other class mates were domg for a llvxng Next mornmg I packed my bags went down to my deluxe auto and helicopter garage gave my manager a few last mmute m structlons Jumped mto my Jetmobxle and headed for our old campmg grounds around Gem In Salt Lake C1ty I stopped for my dally atomxc energy food and I overheard two college students talkmg about thelr classes under a teacher by the name of Mxss Poland After mquxrmg I learned that lt IS none other than Ilene They lnformed me that she was a excellent teacher havmg studxed under great masters of muslc xn Europe I was well pleased to hear th1s so I drove out to the umverslty to see her and found all that educatlon had left her sweet d1spos1t1on unchanged I learned from her that Clarence Havlce had a busmess ln Denver so say1ng farewell I made a speedy trlp and arrlved there before mght Drwmg down Broadway I spzed a large neon slgn blmklng off and on and readlng I-IAVICE HOTEL BFST PLACE IN TOWN Upon enterlng dxgmfxed man wzth a luxurxous beard came over to me and sald ln a famllxar behmd the beard I recognized Clarence After exchangmg greetmgs we VlSlt ed for a whlle then drove out to h1s home ln the suburbs where I met hxs wlfe and family That evemng he showed me a letter he had rece1ved from h1s brother Bob It told of h1s marrlage to a beautlful 1sland ma1den hls mansion ln Cuba and of hzs three black eyed trlplets Next mormng I bade farewell and sped off toward Colby havmg been told by Clarence that I would fmd Wayne Laurltsen around there On commg mto Colby I xmmedxately became snarled ln a trafflc Jam Next to my car was a pickup truck w1th the words LAURITSEN FARMS INC painted on the sldes I spoke with the drlver and he told me that Wayne would probably be found at his headquarters north of Rexford Drxvmg up the paved road to hls farm I saw a large herd of purebred cattle ln the corral and golden wavxng wheat as far as I could see so I surm1sed that he was dolng falrly well for h1mself Once there after much back slappmg and hand shaking we talked about old tlmes and looked over the farm Later as I was about to depart for home two llttle golden halred twlns came runnmg up and said Daddy when IS mommy coming home? Wayne explamed that h1s w1fe was down to the cxty for the week end to do some shoppnng Blddmg goodbye and regrettmg that I was unable to see her as my tunes was runmng short I sped off mto the sun set towards my own home and farruly 10 ' : , .. , ' , 'a voice, Welcome to our hotel. LM-iff' JUNIORS The school year of 1948 49 has been an eventful one for the jumors who are Shurl Decker jerry Knudson joyce Laurltsen Beverley Mentllck Duane Saddler Estelle Treat and jean Woerpel Charles Hopson was a member of the class untxl the second semester when he had enough credits to classlfy as a Semor Soon after school opened we agaln chose Mr McArthur as our sponsor and elect ed jean as our President and Beverley as Secretary Treasurer ln the fall we had several class partles whlch bolstered our morale even though the town of Colby was left none the better for the occasxons We must not have behaved too badly though for the Pyramid Cafe w1ll stxll let us nn after f1rst hxdmg all ash trays and alertlng the not squad All Jokmg asnde we had fun on these class sponsored parties and belxeve there should be more all school partles We thmk our sponsor Mr McArthur the best ever and cannot properly express our appreclatmn to htm for all he has done for us thls year Wlth an eye on the junlor Semor banquet thls year and our future Semor actlvztles we have been busy tlus year raxsmg money for our class fund We have done thls by sellmg magaz1nes Chrlstmas cards and wrappmg paper and by servmg at all our home basketball games The juniors have been active ln any and all school actlvltles as are all the students of G C H S We have chosen umform class rxngs whxch we wxll recexve thls sprmg Also The Darkest Nrght the World Has Ever Known Did Not Put Out the Stars and our class colors blue and whxte As thus year closes we are all waztmg for but not anxlously our Semor year SOPHOMORES We L Vena Spencer Darlene Bond Carrol Burke and Peggy Lannmg were unwillingly led Into school once agam last September We elected Mrs McArthur as Sophomore sponsor We all take part m musxc and athletzcs At the beglnnmg of the year we all had parts 1n the gypsy operetta Chomta We thought we accompllshed rt very well for all the postponements we had because of stormy weather We believe all of us shall have earned a letter 1n basketball Darlene has played forward Carrol has played both forward and guard whxle L Vena and Peggy have played guard regularly We turned out to oe good magazme peddlers after we got through sellmg magazxnes last fall We have taken up the candy sellxng busxness as a way to mcrease our class funds We also sold napkms last spring Accordmg to the way our customers ask for our wares we sell Cherry Marshes Lockjaws Bltes o Honey Vegetable Gum and Brothers Smlth s Cough Drops We really sell qulte a few of the more popular brands of candy bars and gum By the end of the year we hope to have made a lxttle proflt 13 Y I I I , D I I 0 . - I - O . Cl ' II 4,0 1 ,ii We have examlned most of the speclmen from the lab case and others whlch class members have brought to school Among these was a scarlet kmg snake whlchjerry Knudson captured from a sand plt It llved for three days and now rests among other pxckled reptxles m our cabmet Incldentally on the day Shurl Decker brought a plg s kldney to school we had meatloaf for dmner We know the cooks dxd not rustle up the kldney because Beverley Mentllck was ln s hool the followmg afternoon She could hardly stay lil the classroom wlth the organ whlle xt was rare SOCIAL SCIENCE The Soclal Sclence department of Gem H1gh School meets the state requlre ments for graduatlon Cltlzenshlp teaches the prlvlleges and obllgatlons of an Amerxcan Cltlzen The class made a detalled study of the A F of L the C I O and other labor unlons Great stress was lald on the fact that unless each cltlzen exercxsed hxs rxghts he was llable to forfelt them Great emphasxs has been la1d on a good character and personahty when seekmg a means of llvelxhood after completxng the high school tralnlng The Amerlcan Hlstory class has been trymg to mterpret the present and to make predlctlons for the future by makmg a study of our ancestors who have glven thelr hves m war and peace to make our LATIN The Latm department has secured a thorough foundatlon ln Latin grammar and rhetorlc Sxnce the Enghsh grammar IS based almost entxrely on Latm grammar thxs knowledge xs mvaluable to them Many of our legal and medlcal terms have come from Latm The class has enjoyed translatmg these saymgs The class has enjoyed readxng stones about the Roman school also the Forum where the laws were made and publlc meetings were held The Romans have made extenslve contrlbutzons to c1v1l1.zat1on They had paved roads systems of 1rr1gat1on courts long before other natlons became advanced ln c1v1l1zat1on The Latin class was large th1s year and took a constructlve mterest xn 1tS work COMMERCE Ilene Poland 15 the only student m Typing II Hence she has often become general office gxrl as well as worklng out her budgets Her latest project has been typmg the dummy copy of Gem s Gems The exght m Typing I have discovered they have to learn somethlng of spell mg hyphenatzon letter forms and English as well as machme mampulatlon By the end of the fourth sxx weeks all regularly gross over 4-0 words jerry has attamed the hxghest net of 50 words per mmute on a ten mlnute test In Busmess Arlthmetlc the Semors and Sophomores have boned up on the four fundamentals and percentages as well as learmng many short cuts business forms and general business practlces Z4 . . . . I an 2 8 GIRLS ATHLETICS The athletxc season opened w1th a bang and the Gem I-Ilgh Glrls were clamor Ing around xn the dressxng room and everyone was trylng to talk at once We began by playmg volleyball Our flrst volleyball game was wlth Menlo We lost but we lost as good sports We won the next game It was wlth Selden It was after the Selden game that we competed wuth Levant and won The game wlth Grlnnell dld not come out as well and we were agam good sports ln the loslng bracket Cur next game was wlth Rexford whlch we won A tournament was held at Menlo and we came out fourth 1f I remember correctly and there was no trophy for that place After the volleyball season lt was tlme for basketball Our fxrst game of the season was wlth Rexford and we won' We then played Menlo and they defeated us We won from Levant ln our next game We played Menlo agam and agam they defeated us We have played Edson and beaten them twxce The tables turned the other way when we played Clayton twlce We have one more game wlth Levant and are rn great hopes that we wxll wm Beery for hls patlence ln tralnlng us and for helpxng us play good basketball all the way through BOYS ATHLETICS Twelve seems to be the lucky number for the G C I-I S boys athletxc depart ment Volleyball was the flrst sport of the season We played Menlo Rexford Selden and Levant be1ng v1ctor1ous over all but Menlo In October we went to the Tr1 County Tournament at Menlo brmgmg home the second place trophy In basketball we have won one-thxrd of our games We were defeated in the Tournament held january 21 ZZ 23 at Rexford Menlo forfeited thelr game us we lost to Herndon and Grlnnell to place 4th Now we are Wdltlng for the ellmmatlon tournament to be held March 1 Z 3 at Rexford Coach Beery says It looks llke an early baseball season Last but not least the purpose of volleyball basketball and baseball 15 to create a love for sports and good sportsmanshlp Z9 I On behalf of the girls in the Gem Girls Athletic Class I wish to thank Mr. 1 . . . .
