Admxmstratlon fCont1nuedl Mrs Edie graduated from the Mankato Kansas I-hgh School She has had tra1n1ng m Kansas State College at Manlxattan and from the Fort Hays Kansas State College She has had the usual rural school experience taught xn Mankato and taught some years ago ln Gem She too declded to help out m the emergency and came back to Gem to teach th1s year Mrs Koons graduated from the Levant Kansas Hlgh School She took further Levant elementary school and for the past eight years here ln Gem Most of the students know her as M1ss ETWID for it was only last year she decxded to affxx the Koons to her name Whlle the Gem Consohdated School 15 a small school as far as enrollment 1S concerned we feel It is an above average school The splendmd cooperation glven xt from the patrons 1n the district and the churches and other orgaxuzatlons help make it I very pleasant school and commimity in wluch to work training at Fort Hays Kansas State College. She has taught in rural schools. in the S S E N I O R S T5 ZZ...fAZ,7.Lm Freshmen ,OMW JMU Kanabam oi-ewlfwd fi-4.-X FQZM: SENIOR CLASS HISTORY In the year of 1943 s1x students enrolled ln the Freshrnan class of the Gem H1gh School They were as follows Juamta Oyer Paulxne Nevens Orvella Baalman Joyce Mallory V1rg1n1a Bond and Verble Bond Two weeks later a new student Cleora Kley enrolled 1n the Freshman class Durlng the Sophomore year sxx students enrolled They were Virginla Bond Jaumta Oyer Joyce Mallory Cleora Kley and Verble Bond After the fxrst six weeks of our Sophomore year Juanxta Oyer left our class to enroll ln school at Grennsburg Kansas Orvella Baalman had returned to her home town Grinnell Kansas to fxnlsh hrgh school Paullne Nevms had returned to Selden Kansas to enroll mn the Sophomore year of school In 1945 four students Joyce Mallory Virguua Bond Cleora Kley and Verble Bond enrolled 1n the Junlor year of school Durxng this year our class made a success of serving at ball games presentlng the Junior play and being hostesses to the Senlors at the Junlor Senlor Banquet The Semor year mcluded only four students Joyce Mallory Cleora Kley Virginia Bond and Verble Bond Thls IS our smallest class of the four years of hlgh school After twelve weeks of school Joyce Mallory left to be marrled becomlng the wxfe of W11l1am M111er Verble Bond was also a victun of Cupzd and became Mrs Harry Tra1l However Verble 15 f1n1sh1ng hxgh school The subjects taken up by each of the Semors were Typmg II Spamsh I Physiology and Amer1can H1story Besldes we were promment in gxrls chorus and athletics We pulled through the f1rst semester with fazr grades and plan to do better the second semester Dur1ng the flrst semester we sold magazines to make money for our treasury Thxs not only helped us but the rest of the classes in high school as we sponsored a con test for them We struck a hxgh level with our magazine sales Between Columbus Day and the b1rthday of Thomas County we gave an assembly program mcludmg both events It was we feel a success We are lookmg forward to the Semor class day and the Semor play The name of our play IS The Girl Wzth Two Faces It IS a mystery play wh1ch we hope to present successfully Another tradxtxon we have changed IS the use of a plam gray tassel on the mortar board cap This year the tassel w1ll be red and wlute which are the class colors Our flower IS the Amerxcan Beauty Rose We plan to come through the second semester with three graduates Cleora Kley V1rg1n1a Bond and Verble Bond Traxl Verble and Vlrginia have gone all twelve years to the Gem School. . . . . Of course I knew where my twm slster Verble was and declded to go V1S1t her and her husband and famxly I hadn 1: as yet seen any of her chlldren and I wanted to so very much After I was there for a a few days I felt as 1f I reeded another vacatlon so I declded I would take a flylng trlp Iboarded an alrplane 1n Washmgton where my slster llved and started on my way to Ca11forn1a I stopped at Grants Pass Oregon and whxle I was Waltlhg for another plane whom should I meet but Cleora Kley another of my Sen1or churns I found that she was not marr1ed as yet, but had a prospect Also she was a professor ln one of the h1gh schools 1n that town I asked her 1f she knew about any of the other students of the Gem Hlgh School when we were and she told me she had corresponded w1th Donald Mullens and that he owned a blg ranch 1n Texas whlch was d01ng very nlcely Also she told me that Beverley Mentllck owned an elaborate dress shop 1n Grants Pass 0 . . . v . ' I , 1 1 , , Y l I - 1 . . .. . , 1 1 - L' - 1 . 1 I - .. 1 1 1 A - . 1 9 Prophecy qc ontmuedl I boarded my plane agam to start on my way and the next stop was at The Dallas 1n Oregon Here I found a store Hav1ce and Havxce Inc I declded to look 1n and to my surprlse I found that Clarence and Bob HHVICS had a real n1ce store grocery and dry goods combmed I d1d not have any t1me to waste so d1d not get to talk to them I was hurrymg back to my plane when whom should I see but Estelle Treat She had on a w.h1te umform I dldn t thmk she looked 11ke a nurse so I asked her the mean mg of It all She told me she owned a Beauty Salon Treat For Old Age just around the corner and that jean Woerpel was her partner She was ln a bxg hurry and so we d1d n t get a chance to talk over all the good tlmes we had had back 1n our hlgh school days I got on my next plane and there I found Wllma Hopson She was an a1rl1ne hostess We had a great talk about our high school days 1n Gem and she told me that Wayne Woer pel was up ln Malne and was the owner of a w1nter resort I stopped at Los Angeles and dec1ded to stay over nlght there I went to the best hotel I could fmd and there I met Duane Saddler who sa1d he was the pr0pr1ef0r Of the place He told me he knew notlung of any of the rest of the klds so I spent a quxet nzghu. thmklng of my experlences durlng the past few days The next mornlng I started on my way home to Florlda I declded to go back to my home town of Gem and see just who was there yet The plane landed at Colby whlch had really grown I was Just gettlng and started to get 1n the taxl when someone called my name I turned around and there was Betty Golemboskl After the usual greetlngs I asked her about herself She told me she had marrled an artlst and they were very well to do I told her of all the klds I had seen and asked her 1f she knew of any of the rest of them She sa1d she thought Joyce Laurxtsen was the champ1on glrls basketball player 1n the state of Kansas and that Shurl Decker was the boys champ1on basketball player m the same state It was really quxte surpr1s1ng After we sa1d our good byes I declded to get a bus and did so When I got on I found that Wayne Laurltsen was the dnver He sa1d that jerry Knudson was go1ng to school at Yale and hoped to be superlntendent there some day He also told me that JIIH Knudson had a bzg farm north of Colby and was domg qulte wel' for hzmself I got off at the next bus stop and declded to see 1f I could get a r1de to Gem I start ed walklng down the street and I heard someone honk a horn at me I looked back and there was Kenneth Nlunkres 1n a 1957 l1mous1ne I went over to the car He told me that Ilene Poland had marrled a b1g farmer and that she 11ved up ln North Dakota Ole had learned to swlm' Also he sa1d that Bernard Poland was a lawyer 1n Tampa Florzda I found that Kenneth a car dealer was makmg a busxness tr1p to Gem He asked me 1f I would lzke to go along to r1de ln h1s new car When I got to Gem I found that lt was the suburb of Colby There I found Mary She had marrled a teacher and had two very mce lookxng ch11dren I thought that th1s must be the end of my Journey so aga1n I caught my plane and flew back to Florlda I was very happy to get back to my Sewmg Factory and home' Why? XJ' U N D ER G RAD S JUNIOR CLASS We the Jwuor Calss of 1946 47 were happy to take our places 1n th1s school on September 3 The Junxor Class conslsts of only two gxrls Mary Belle Mlller and Wllma Hopson We are studymg the subjects of Amer1can HlSt0Ty Engllsh Typlng I Bxology and Chorus We also take an actlve part ln the athletlc fzeld Our class play Aaron S11Ck from Punkln Crlck was presented to a large aud1 ence on December 6 We were asslsted by the Sophomores and Seniors to complete the cast Our other money makmg enterprlses were the sellmg of Christmas cards 1n the communlty and selhng popcorn at the ball games In all we have cleared enough to royally entertam the Senlors at the annual junlor Senlor banquet to be held in the sprlng At the beglnnlng of the second semester two boys Bernard Poland and Wayne Woer pel jolned us Next year we hope to take our places agaln ln thls bu1ld1ng as SOEh1St1 cated Semors SOPHOMORE The Sophomore Class of 47 enrolled on September 3 w1th n1ne 1ndustr1ous and amb1t1ous students MISS Thornburg was chosen for the class sponsor The followxng officers were elected Kenneth Munkres presldent j1m Knudson vlce presxdent jamce Buford secretary and treasurer The great event of the year was Freshman 1n1t1at1on It seems that the Sophomore gxrls got mlxed up as much as the Freshmen The class has asslsted ln all school act1v1t1es JUIIIOI' play basketball volleyball mus1c and what have you Durlng this outstand1ng year they lost one of the students leavlng only One Rose Among the Thorns Ilene Poland THE FRESHMEN OF 1946 1947 On September 3 1946 the 25th set of Freshmen of the Gem School took thexr places m the study hall These mcluded Estelle Treat Jean Woerpel Betty Golemboskl Beverly Menthck Joyce Launtsen Duane Saddler Donald Mullens jerry Knudson and Shurl Decker Of these n1ne only four Estelle jean Duane and Don have been together smce the f1rst grade Thmgs went along smoothly enough as everyone dzved mto then' Algebra C1t1zensh1p Enghsh World Geography Mus1c and Physlcal Education untzl several weeks later the 1l'llt1Bt10Il came up There certamly were lots of lxpstlck smeared hlllbllly boys and g1r1s at school that day Freshmen have been well represented ln sports and all other hCt1V1t1eS of the school th1s year Our flrst play was presented durmg National Educatxon Week and was entltled The Roundup of Mxnme on behalf of the high school We also elected our officers 'r - . . ,F ll - ' 1 ' - . . . .
