Proverb 29 18 I nculate Conception School FATHER GEIBEL'S DREAM - OUR VISION I S S W 2 Father Geibel Memorial High School 3 FOREWORD In the opening words of his Inaugural Address, President john F. Kennedy said: We observe today . . . a celebration of freedom, sym- bolizing an end as well as a beginning, signifying renewal as well as change. Very appropriately, we apply these words to another memor- able day, january 6, 1964, when the exodus from the Immaculate Con- ception High School took place. As we knelt at the Holy Mass which marked this commemorative end, as well as beginning, we Seniors experienced some very mixed emotions. A creeping nostalgia seemed to come over us, but, not for long, for as the Holy Mass neared completion, our eagerness to enter the new school increased. Despite the downpour of rain which no one seemed to mind, we reached Geibel High in a very short time. Here in a brief ceremony of cutting the green and white ribbons which had been stretched across the entrance doors, the school was officially opened. Immediately follow- ing this function, Reverend Francis Ott, Superintendent of Schools, blessed a crucifix which he placed on a wall at the main entrance. Then, in a special prayer, Father proceeded to beg God's blessing on the school and all who would be part of it. The enthusiasm and exuberant joy of the students, faculty, and friends could scarcely be contained. This was Father Geibel's dream come true. CONTENTS 1 f , I f ' -I - ,,,, . Twelve years ago, on the occasion of his golden jubilee of his ordination to the Holy Priesthood, it was said of him, As an educator, Father well knew that one of the most effective means of securing perpetuity in religious training is the Catholic High School. In 1930, as he presented diplomas to twelve high school graduates from Immaculate Conception High School, Father Geibel saw the fulfillment of his dream. But progress is never at a standstill, and change is God's Providence at workg and so, for many years since that first high school graduation. Father Geibel set his sights on a new vision-a high school building. separate from the elementary grades, one that would accommodate a far greater number of students. Father purchased a large tract of land in the Hillcrest area of Connells- ville. This became the site of the new high school, however, Father did not live to the day when the transition was made from the Immaculate Conception Parish High School to the Diocesan Father Geibel Memorial High School. The dream of this zealous Priest of God did not dissolve into thin air because other educators continued his work and made it a reality. Truly, the Words of the golden-mouthed St, John Chrysostom must have been their inspiration: What greater work is there than training the mind and forming the habits of the young?'l May the torch of our lives lighted by this zeal burn in tribute to FATHER HENRY GEIBEL. No less, is this true of students seeking an education. For us, this guiding light is our beloved Bishop, His Excellency, Most Reverend William G. Connare. In order to accommodate the increasing number of high school students' in the diocese, and because our spiritual leader is concerned, not only about our acceptance into college, but more so about our entrance into Heaven, Bishop Connare sanctioned whole-heartedly, the establishment of diocesan high schools, Father Geibel Memorial High School is the third of this kind, serving sixteen parishes in the Connellsville area. Thanks to our beloved Bishop, another milestone in the field of education has been reached, and the lights of learning burn with greater intensity because of his zeal and interest. To treat of the changeover from Immaculate Conception H i g h School to Geibel High, and not in- clude F A T H F R AUGUSTINE MARZHAUSFR would certainly make our GALAXY incomplete. The kindly personal interest which Father has always taken in the students, his encouraging smile, and friendly greeting will always be cherished by us. Robert Frost wrote: 'lHome is where they have to take you when you have no other place to go, and because the Geibel High building was not yet completed, i'Home to us was Im- maculate Conception School, and Hour father, good Father Marz- hauser, took us in, Thanks, Father! A thousand thanks! As Superintendent of schools. FATHER FRANCIS OTT has been following very closely the transition from the Immaculate Conception Parish High School to the Diocesan Father Geibel Me- morial High School. On the oc- casion of the formal opening of the new school Father pointed out the advantages and opportunities which will be afforded us in the new modern building. Father urged us to use these to our fullest capacities, so that as graduates of Geibel High we will prove to be assets to our Alma Mater, our families, and to the Catholic Church. fix REVEREND WILLIAM SHERIDAN Father Sheridan, our Principal, is the driving force behind the great strides made in the reorganization from a small parish high school to a rapidly expanding diocesan high school. With his administrative ability, his keen interest, and untiring efforts, Father aims to produce a school that will be an outstanding example of Catholic modern secondary education. Wfith the firm understanding of a Priest, and the watchful guidance of a Principal, Father has Won the respect of us all. As the first graduating class of Father Geibel Memorial High, we look to him with reverence and inspiration. MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL The Catholic people of Central Fayette County can indeed rejoice with the opening of the new Father Geibel High School. The long- awaited dream has finally become a reality. Our beautiful new school can be pointed to with great pride by all those in this area who have sacrificed so much to build it. Father Geibel Memorial High School continues the work in secondary education begun thirty years ago with the foundation of Immaculate Conception Parish High School. For a generation it has been contributing to the glory of the Church. Its great success has been the inspiration for the continuance and enlargement of its educational work. This high school hopes to carry on in this splendid tradition. We hope and pray that the future generations will be able to look back upon the accomplishments of Father Geibel High School with pride and satisfaction. XX'ith May I have your attention, please.
