1961 It all began in March of 1961. The plans of a new school were leaving the drawing boards and be¬ coming a reality. The completion of Donald E. Gavit Junior Senior High School brought to Hammond a new high school to meet the needs of a rapid¬ ly growing high school population. The 7th, 8th and 9th grades were in attendance in September. The 10th grade was added in 1962; the 11th in 1963; and the first class graduated in 1964. The students found the most modem facilities in the building. Those to educate the whole child. All the Science, English and other subject matters one needed for a well rounded background. Since then Gavit High School has been expanded. The proposed auditorium with a seating capacity of 1200, band and music rooms, shops and additional classrooms are now part of the living picture at Gavit. Another asset of the school is the new football field with its adequate parking facilities. New flood lights and bleachers have also been added.
