Chefs, Seamstresses Master Domestic Arts Seamstress Janise Cherven happily as¬ sists Beth Lynch with her corduroy project for advanced clothing. Future chefs cautiously prepare to view their “homemade” creations. This year Gavit’s home economics department strove to give the entire Gavit poplace—male and female a working knowledge of homemaking techniques. Seamstresses acquired fimdamen- tal sewing skills, applying them to such basic projects as skirts, and jumpers in Clothing 1. They ad¬ vanced to more difficult work with pleated skirts, pajamas and tailored blouses in Clothing 2. As students became even more skillful they un¬ dertook coat and suit projects, restyling and updating a wardrobe, and a dressy dress, by applying advanced sewing techniques taught in Clothing 3 and 4. Gavit cooks concocted pastry, cakes, and other baked goods in Foods 2, while applying fundamen¬ tals learned in Goods 1. In Foods 3 future homemakers continued with their cookery while learning techniques of menu planning and budgeting. In boys foods, boys were offered the opportunity to become experienced in such homemaking necessities as table setting and man¬ ners, shopping and planning meals, and basic cooking principles.

Future Artisians Develop Industrial Arts Mr. Molnar goes over the electrical system of a house with his future electricians. Gavit’s industrial arts depart¬ ment again offered curricula varied enough to satisfy the demands and interests of each student. Graphic arts taught operation of the letter- press and offset printing presses. Students learned techniques and methods used in the paper and ink industry. In second semester they became familiar with processes of halftones, binding, and multi-color printing. Novice mechanical drawing stu¬ dents concentrated on fundamentals of drawing instruments and then progressed to more advanced work; including sectional and pictoral drawing, as well as architectural drawing and home design. In woodworking, aspiring crafts¬ men learned operation of wood¬ working tools and machines. They applied their skills through con¬ struction of a chosen project. 30
