Curriculum Corresponds to Student Needs Ophelia’s (Karen Farnner) death is mourned (excluding a few smiles here and there) by Joel Hochman, Anne Royal, Craig Muir, Dave Nelson, and Margo Pasko. Senior Accelerated English actors perform Hamlet for fellow pupils. Talented C. P. English 7 amateur actors perform the witches scene from MacBeth. The ability to speak and write one’s own language is essential for success. To meet this demand, Gavit offered college preparatory English, practical and general Eng¬ lish, accelerated English, world lit¬ erature, and developmental reading. Practical English prepared stu¬ dents for the business world and everyday life by putting proper emphasis on proper speaking and writing. General English stressed literature, grammar, and writing. Emphasis was on vocabulary for col¬ lege bound students in College Prep. There was also a six week study on reference books, a study of immense value for college. Shake¬ speare’s writings, including Romeo and Juliet, Macbeth, and Julius Caesar, as well as other great liter¬ ary figures, such as Chaucer, were explored by the students. World literature was offered in place of last semester English. This course probed the history and in¬ fluences of great literature. ' The Greeks and Romans were studied throughout the semester.

Glads Probe Methods, Theorums, Concepts This year a variety of math courses was offered to fulfill the needs of each individual student. As usual, college prep classes struggled through algebra’s equa¬ tions, theoroms, and formulas, ge¬ ometry’s proofs, and the logarithms of algebra-trig. For futher study, math analysis was offered this year. In this more advanced class, math- meticians employed skills previous¬ ly learned, while acquiring many new valuable ones useful for the college math tests given in the spring. In the experimental math, U.I.- C.S.M., pupils again concerned themselves with self-discovery of concepts, as well as math theory and computation. General math pupils learned to balance a budget, fill out and com¬ pute income tax forms, as well as to increase basic math skills. It takes teamwork to solve this geometry proof, say Pam Smith and Janice Wargo. UICSM pupil, Joanne Plunkett, demonstrates the proper use of the complicated slide rule. 15
