FADISTS Sally Bewley, Leone Skalnik and George Clarke model year’s crazes — pinned up or casual hair, knee-high boots, John Lennon caps, jumpers, textured nylons, stacked heels, windbreakers and black suede shoes. LEVER-PULLING pollsters electing President, Governor and state sen- ators file past clerks en route to lobby voting machine. Page Twenty-six

LOUIE, LOUIE” and Valley of the Jolly Green Giant” highlight 105 minute afternoon performance by Kingsmen Norm Sundholm, Lynn Eoston, Mike Mitchell, Dick Peterson and Barry Curtis. 3 r fund drives, basketball tournament Mr. Frank Gradisher reset tables for next rush of breakfasters. Student enthusiasm for ticket sales smashed records and dubbed fifth annual pancake break- fast “largest in the world”. PTA divvied out pro- ceeds to school clubs and departments. Pancakers boasting, six dollar ticket sales con- vened in auditorium March 21 for 105 minute lark by the Kingsmen. Fivesome, commenting on “Louie, Louie”, tossed two souvenir neckties and a drumstick to audience. High-ticket-selling seventh graders earned ring- side rights in capacity crowd. Kingsmen escaped throng of autograph hunters by pulling out as decoy car held fans. Eight Gavit boys joined cohorts from Griffith and Hammond High for Mr. Sam Spitale’s bas- ketball team. Entered in the Whiting Community Basketball League, team boasted record of eleven wins and five losses. Page Twenty-five

World events, fads bombard Gavit ELECTION CONTROVERSY hits high-water mark as standard-bearer Dave Rose, senior, leads hall campaign for Barry’s boys”. Presidential election brought Lyndon Johnson’s campaign to East Chicago, rallying 40,000 people including Gavit students. Barry Goldwater tabbed equal time at Hammond Civic Center, overflowing 7,000 seating capacity. Political enthusiasm for Presidential election engulfed students with slo- gan buttons and unofficial lunchroom campaigning. British and Steelworkers’ elections set Wilson and Abel in the cockpits. Civil rights pilgrimages and demonstrations spirited discussions, debates, and private conver- sations on integration vs. segregation. World’s eye focused on international Viet Nam crisis as high school senior boys faced reality of impending draft. World mourned statesmen Winston Churchill, General MacArthur and Herbert Hoover while clergy lost Cardinal Meyer to cancer. Warren Report reminded Americans of Kennedy tragedy. Sports enthusiasts thrilled to United States gold medals captured at Tokyo Olympics. St. Louis Cardinals literally flew away with World Series, pocketing four straight games from the New York Yankees. “Hullabaloo”, “Shindig” and “Hollywood-a-go- go” popularized British-imported Beatles, Dave Clark Five, the Kinks, Chad and Jeremy, Petula Clark and Dusty Springfield.
