There is more to any school than the bricks and mortar makmg up the shell; but every heart and soul is contained within a body, and the body that holds Gateway’s heart and soul — the building — was first thought of in the mid-1950’s. At that time, Pitcairn and Monroeville were two separate school districts, with Pitcairn High School serving one, and nearby private schools available for the other on a tuition basis. Then, following the districts’ merger, plans for the necessary joint senior high school were initiated in February of 1956. By January of the following year, groundbreaking had begun, and the new school board selected the name “Gateway. ” This choice was brought about by the fact that the Pennsyl- vania Turnpike was nicknamed “Gateway to the East”; and since Monroeville was destined to become a major turnpike junction point, the name seemed appropriate and it stuck. Dedication of the new senior high was on November 15, 1959, and the first 196 seniors graduated in June of that same year. By 1965, increased enrollment made expansion to the six year old school necessary, and the “new wing” was completed in 1967. Gateway V first principal, Dr. Eugene Yarnel, remembers those hectic, early days of the new school fondly, stating in an interview that the element which impressed him the most was the tremendous school spirit. The handbook, which includes the standard operating procedures of Gateway, was compiled by SGA members, as was the once strict dress code. Almost all of the rules were created and maintained by the students. There was a real desire to become involved, he added, telling how clubs, organizations and extracurricular activities really thrived during those new years. Though Gateway is no longer new, school spirit is hardly a thing of the past. Today, over 30 school sponsored clubs flourish and continue the trends of excellence started twenty- five years ago. Today’s students are free to express their talents and abilities athletically, artistically, and educationally with various organizations dealing in their particular field of inter- est. School pride is generated by accomplishments, and looking back on the list of great ones that our school has had in the past, every student will agree that everyone associated with Gateway Senior High has a right to be proud. Here at Gateway, that definition can be found m everything. Even the names of some of our clubs — Portavian and Portal to be exact — arc translated to mean “Gateway. ” Another place to find those ideals is the Gateway seal. Established m 1958 by SGA. the seal, imprinted on official letterheads and class rings, consists of a lion surrounded by the school motto — scholarship, leadership, and sportsmanship. The lion represents learning which, above all, is Gateway’s purpose: it is a place where we may learn. However, that learning is not limited to the knowledge obtained from studies, which is “scholarship”; it also includes the awareness and strengthening of self, which must come from within. This “inner learning ” aids in fulfilling the next goal: “leadership. ” It is a goal everyone can achieve, for everyone has a unique ability he or she can be the best at. It is Gateway’s aim to aid each student in recognizing that ability and achieving excellence. . The third ideal is “sportsmanshipwhich may mean losing not defeated, or winning and not allowing yourself to rest on that victory but to continue your success. These goals of the seal become the goals of every Gateway student, and the pride of living up to those worthy objectives is something that is expressed before every home football game when the crowd stands for the A Ima Mater. Originally, when there were two school districts, there were two Alma Maters: one for Monroeville and one for Pitcairn. However, when the districts merged, so did the song, and today's version, with music by Brahms, is a compromise of both, capturing the best of each. The late 1950’s were eventful throughout the world, peppered with social and scientific breakthroughs. Gateway had breakthroughs of its own, too. Everything was fresh and never before done. New clubs, new teams, new activities — new everything! So, when tn March of 1958 the U.S. satellite Explorer III was launched, it realty could have symbolized the launching of the new high school. By September of ’58, when Gateway’s doors first opened, teen ulol Elvis Presley had been drafted. “Dear Abby” was a regular syndicated newspaper feature, and the U.S.S.R.’s Krusches was planning a visit to the U.S. The new school was not wasting any time, and almost immediately a majorette squad: a cheerleading squad; a band; a choir; and bowling, basketball, track, swimming, and football teams were formed. While Alaska and Hawaii were being named states and Gigi was sweeping the Academy Awards, Gateway had its first Coronation Ball, themed “Bah Ha’i,” sponsored a March of Dimes fundraiser, and had its first school play. The new year had started and new plans were already in the making. Three assemblies, the first annual Kennywood picnic, and baseball fever brought on by the trouncing of Chicago by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the World Series preceded commencement in May. For Gateway, the graduation was marked with optimism and high hopes for continued growth and success as real as the first years had been. Anniversary 5 th ANNIVERSARY 25th ANNIVERSARY 25th ANNIVERSARY The 1960’s was a decade of growth and rebellion. Teenage America wanted to make itself known, and so it did. Hippies and Flower Children became infamous, and as one Michigan newspaper put it, “They took their tactics from Gandhi, their ulealism from philos- ophy class, and theu money from Daddy. ” The youth was the Woodstock generation, the Viet- nam generation, the Civil Rights generation. But before all that, before the war and psychadelics and Jimi Hendrix, there was Camelot. For one brief, shining moment, there was the prom- ise of a light at the end of the tunnel. There was the hope that youth and vigor and touch football would charm a nation. And for almost four years, John F. Kennedy and his wife Jackie made that hope a reality. When Kennedy was assassinated in 1963, the world mourned. Daniel Patrick Moynihan observed the crushing blow by stating simply, “We’ll laugh again, it’s just that we’ll never be young again.” Lyndon Johnson accepted the Presidency at an un- enviable time; the war was now a U.S. problem and the youth had long since thrown down their hula hoops in favor of picket signs reading, “What if they gave a war and nobody came?” and “Hey, hey, LBJ, how many kids did you kill today?” Some turned to the music of Bob Dylan and Joan Baez, the balladeers of the day, but many others opted for sit-ins and marches, protesting not only Vietnam, but the lack and decline of civil rights. Behind Martin Luther King, Jr., blacks and whites both emerged, demanding racial equality and often being the targets of violence. Amidst the turbulent national events, Gateway stu- dents struggled to find their place in a rapidly changing world that seemed to romp from one extreme to the next. Gateway made demands too — and the students here became caught up in the spirit of the times just like everyone else. Everything was being built up or renewed: the Gateway stadium, with seating for 2700, was opened and the class A A football team was ready to start serious competition; the school paper, the Alphalite, was admitted to the national rating society for high school newspapers; and, a student committee desingned the official class ring for the school. Organizations for every possible interest were being created as fast as the need for them arose, and soon, the Future Homemakers of America, the Biology club, and the pep club appeared on the scene. Baseball and wrestling opened up their programs on the heels of a major Gateway athletic first: the 1961 boys swim team had the distinction of being the first to send representatives to statewide competitions. The desire to be involved spread to interaction with other schools as well. The SGA hosted the 1962 Pennsylvania Association of Student Councils Convention, while the marching band hosted All-State Band, with participants from 103 Western Pennsylvania schools that same year. Gateway entered the decade with a roar — motivation was high as were expectations, and the student body couldn V wait to live up to each and every goal they had set. The latter half of the decade was highlighted by major athletic victories, including a section title for the baseball team, a WPIAL title for the golf team, two section championships for the boys basketball team, a West Penn Conference title for track, and a A A title for the undefeated 1969 Gator football team. The world’s mood was rebellious and there were a few evident “stgns of the times” at Gateway, too. The most publicized was the Dress Code issue resulting in a student walkout and subsequent school board intervention in 1969. Also, SGA sponsored a clothing and money drive for the bene- fit of those people uprooted by the Vietnam War, and everyone aided in making the project successful. Chess Club, Ski Club, National Honor Soci- ety, and Stamp Club were organized, and the memorable student body social events were the “Sig- nature Swing” in 1968 and the first Homecoming in 1969. The “Swing” was set up on a Friday night and its purpose was to get as many signatures in your yearbook as possible. Tables were organized in the gym and student response was great. Homecoming was very elaborate, including a bonfire, pep rally, fireworks, am. the first parade, held at the Monroeville Mall. As the 1960’s came to a close. Gateway celebrat- ed its 10th anniversary; the graduating classes in- creased in size from those early years by more than 10%; the library and cafeteria were expanded, and the planetarium was constructed; and Principal Yarnel moved on. being replaced by Principal Peers. Gateway was ready to start the new decade, leaving the old one behind except for some great memories. However, m the 70’s, all of those energies were directed inward instead of outward, and thus began what would be known as the “me generation. ” The last of the Apollo moonflights was completed in 1972, finishing a program that had made possible twelve moon walks and countless advances in technology. Unfortunately, the nation’s eyes were turned downward quite soon with news of the “ Watergate Scandal”, which led to the eventual resignation of President Richard Nixon and the imprisonment of several top White House officials. As if to “clean up their act”, start over and attempt renewal, Americans turned to health crazes. Everyone sought to become a “total person ”; and the women’s liberation movement, health salons, and self-improvement programs fourished. fogging and racquetball became the fads, and everyone was reading labels to determine “caloric values” and “cholesterol intake,” whatever all of that meant. The year 1976 marked the nation’s bicentennial, and special commemorative coins, flags, posters, and everything else were the hot items on the market. However, real patriotism rallied together when, in 1979, about 60 Americans were taken hostage in Iran. The media coverage was tremendous, and millions of people tied yellow ribbons around the trees in their front lawis to show support for their kinsmen held captive in a small country that was rapidly grabbing everyone’s attention. So, though the individuals both at Gateway and elsewhere were struggling to become the best they could be, they were also able to come together to fight a common foe and unite for a common cause. The beginning of the 1970’s was marked by the additon of many new electives allotted for Gateway. Several English, science and math courses were added to enable the students to make their schedules much more well-rounded, encouraging learning on a broader, more diverse level so that more could be gained from it. But, learning wasn’t the only thing undergoing changes. In 1972, a bit of harmless rebellion caused a very organized protest of the high prices and formal attire of the annual prom. Over 100 students assembled on prom day at Cloverleaf Golf Course to hold the first official “Non-Prom Open. ” Between the Prom and Non-Prom goers, there were 960 students absent that day. Athletics were still a vital force at Gateway, and at the end of 1972 the Hockey team was formed. Later that same year, the Gateway gridiron force succeeded in winning their second Class A A crown by beating Jeannette 20-0. Another startling athletic first was the 1974 formation of the intramural ping-pong league that had play-off tournaments in the spring. So, students at Gateway were fortunate enough to be supported in their educational and social desires for individual distinction, and they achieved them with style, class, and a little bit of humor. 10 Anmvtrfdry ■ the 70’s 25th ANNIVERSARY 25th ANNIVERSARY 25th ANNIVERSAR PICTURES (page II) Clock- wise from upper left: The musical Brigadoon, performed at Gate- way by Senior Choir in March, 1971; Students depict the dress and dance of 1972; Drama production “Ten Little Indians” under the di- rection of Mr. Davis in 1973; Stu- dents portray type of clothes worn to school, 1973-76; Girls' softball team, 1972; Portavian business staff, 1973-74; Mr. Maxwell's tradi- tionally decorated room, 1971-72. Still more “firsts” were in store for Gateway at the end of the 1970’s. Socially, the coronation ball was changed into tnv distinct events in 1975, creating a Homecoming Queen and a Mardi Gras King; and a Dance Marathon was held to benefit Saint Peter’s Child Development Center and raised over $2000. Athletically, girls’ volleyball was initiated; girts’ “powder puff’’ football was started. Track was the 1976 WPIAL Champs; the gymnastics team the 1979 section champs; and the football team the WPIAL Co-champs with Upper St. Clair in 1975. Musically, George M., Bye, Bye Birdie, and Flower Drum Song were produced by the choral department. The band took a 1978 trip to Toronto, and Jazz Band was the 1979 winner at the Duquesne University Jazz Band Competition. If all of those things weren’t enough, the “Mr. Gateway” competition started in 1978; the bicentennial graduating class was the largest ever; and the Alphalite changed its name to the Portal. In all aspects, Gateway was becoming better equipped to deal with the needs of the individual. Even after twenty years, improvements and additions were still being made to increase efficiency and opportunity for the students. And what a great attitude to have when approaching the end of one decade and the beginning of the next. MMmmm the 25th ANNIVERSARY 25th ANNIVERSARY 25th ANNIVERSAR The 1980’s is promising to he a decade of renaissance, hard work, and accomplish- ments. So far, they have been years marked with Reaganomics and the very real possibility of economic strife; years that hare seen assassination attempts on both the Pope and our U.S. President. However, though at times the future may not have seemed too hopeful, there were other times when people everywhere were caught up in the adventure, promise, and romance of the tomorrow on the horizon. The wedding of Britain ’s Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer provided 700 million people with a true to life, televised fairy tale: a royal wedding that won the hearts of all who witnessed it. Back on the home front, the Space Shuttle Columbia opened the doors to a new era in space that could someday result in regular trips to the moon and surrounding areas without major expense. And, Sandra Day O'Connor received the prestigious honor of being appointed the first woman to serve on the Supreme Court. Punk rock und New Wave beats have taken firm hold, and they offered for some likely entertainment alternatives to major league baseball and professional football, which both dragged out their seasons due to long strikes. The 80 s are a time to set sights high; to dream big, and achieve your dreams. Gateway students seem to sense these possibilities and are answering to them with the spirit that has become a tradition here. Gateway kicked off the ’80’s as did Pittsburgh and the surrounding area by cheering the Sfeelers on to another Super Bowl victory, this time over the Los A ngeles Rams. All of the stalwart fans who had attended the games in the worst of weather unfortunately had to pay the price. Gateway students were no exception, and the attendance rate was cut in half because of the flu. Fortunately, though, better weather did come, and with it came the First Annual AFS Food Festival, five National Merit finalists, and the Jazz Festival which Gateway hosted Then, GHS had the honor of placing third in both the Biology and Computer Divisions of Pennsylvania competitions at Slippery Rock State College. Gateway could be held back by nothing — not even the teacher's strike that delayed the school’s opening until September 10 in the fall of 1980! But when the year finally did get started, another hurdle came up: the Gateway service workers went on strike. Students learned to appreciate hot lunches during those days when they were brown-bagging it. Trash overflowed the garbage cans and hallways, and for awhile it seemed as if the strikes would never end. During that time, the Gateway student body turned to athletics and Agatha Christie to cheer them: the Gator football team romped over Penn Hills and the junior class presented the classic mystery play, Ten Little Indians. fust when everything seemed to be back to normal, and commencement exercises were being planned, another setback came up: it was rumored that because of nine days not made up due to the teacher’s strike, GHS graduation would be illegal. The 614 seniors did not take too kindly to this, and after months of debate and discussion, the graduation date remained as originally scheduled. Although 79-80 and 80-81 may not have been the most uncomplicated of school years, they were certainly not without accomplishments, proving that when the going gets tough, Gateway is tough enough to get going! The 1981-82 school year brought great prestige to the music department of Gateway with the smash success of the musical West Side Story and the Golden Gator Marching Band’s appearance at Three Rivers Stadium for a salute to the Steelers. While Gateway students were tuning up, so were the administrators and school board, who made the not-too-surprising decision that GHS would become a four-year school in the 1983-84 school year due to decreased enrollment. Another milestone event was the announcement of Dr. Joseph Shafley’s retirement after many years as Superintendent. He served Gateway well; and with the end of his last full school year, many tributes were justifiably paid to him. The year 1982 closed on a promising note — senior class President Soma Eremic, in her commencement address, described a gradual transition among the students from disunity to solidarity. The Class of ’82 emerged as just that — a class of people joined by their similar experiences and pride in what they had shared. Their “oneness” was even reminiscent of the closeness demonstrated by that first graduating class 24 years before them. Amiveruiry IS Pages from Yesterday Leading to Tomorrow ANNIVERSARY 25th ANNIVERSARY 25th ANNIVERSARY Gateway has survived twenty-five years of growth and alteration; and the breed of student that graduated from here has grown and changed as welL Each class had the chance to learn from the trials and accomplishments of their predecessors, as will each class to come use the past as then guide. Our first accomplishment came early in September when the class posed for a (large!) group photo. This was a first in Gateway’s twenty-five years and definitely something to be proud of. A bigger-than-life Garfield won first place in the Homecoming Parade. The monotony of the winter months was broken by the informal “Winter Bash” sponsered by the senior class. With spring and senioritis came candy sales to raise money for The Prom 1983 and the.Senior Dinner Dance. These things all helped to make this year a fitting way to leave Gateway — with memories of laughter, fun, and friendships. Under the awe inspiring leadership of co-chiefs Lenna Liu and Mylene Samek, and the omnipresent wis- dom of advisors Miss Katy Burns and Mrs. Nancy Toman, the all-around Good Group slaved over ancient tomes, discovering wonderful and different ways to create the collector’s edition of the 25th anniversary yearbook. Flash-happy photographers, layout- weary editors, and ink-stained copywriters will definitely vow on their lives that the 1983 edition of the Portavian is one of the best ones yet; and the perseverance of the tireless business staffers made this sales year just as great as the undeniably awe- some product! The representatives are elected each spring by each class and each club and sport has a member at large. SGA sponsors several activities, including Homecoming. At the holiday season, SGA has a Children's Flospital Fund Raising Drive. Politically. SGA plays a major role. They hold student forums to hear student opinions and an exchange day with area schools. The Gators finished fourth in their section with an overall record of 13 wins and 7 losses. One of the most outstanding team achievements according to Coach Bob Parker was the few goals scored by opponents against Gateway. The Gators lost a mere 35 goals to opponents compared to the 73 goals they scored against opponents. Other season highlights included beating Thomas Jefferson and Belle Vernon after previous losses. Coach Parker commented on the first year success of the Gators stating, “With a little more luck we could have been in the play-offs’’. When asked about the forecast for next year, Coach Parker stated that the team will have many returning lettermen, and he looks forward to another successful season. In addition to team highlights, there were a few individual highlights. Tito Lima and Richard Holmes qualified for the Section 3 first team, while Mike Davis and Jim Kovach qualified for the Section 3 second team. Lettermen included Richard Holmes, Tito Lima, Brian Kovach, Mike Davis, Jim Kovach, Jeff Bennett, Maurice Stevens, Dave Spaeder, Walt Remcheck, Brad Simmonds, Tim Nichols, Peter Huston, Jeff Lake, and Dean Demarest. Coach Tedorski may have felt another disappointing season coming on since he didn’t have a starting senior and only juniors Rick Hangliter, Mike O’Rourke, and John Blackwood returning. However, “new blood’’, such as Tony Cima and Tom Davis made a surprise appearance at the early tryouts and things took a turn for the better. Davis alternated with letterman Paul “Clubber” Jacobi as 5th man of five starters, and Cima competed for the second and third positions with Rick Hangliter and Mike O’Rourke usually occupying the 1st position. Later in the year, Cima won long driving honors at a team tournament. Concluding the season was the prestigious WPIAL tournament. Both Tony Cima and Mike O’Rourke qualified, Cima firing a 5 over par 75 and O’Rourke with a fine round of 77. The team lettermen include Rick Hangliter, Mike O’Rourke, Tony Cima, John Blackwood, Jim Shannon, and Paul Jacobi. Coach Tedorski looks to another winning season next year with a fine crop of young golfers returning. - Golf 1 1 J4 GirIs’ Tennis The 1982 Gateway Girl’s Tennis Team com- pleted the best season in Gateway’s history. Ann Miller coached the girls to an outstanding record of nine wins and one loss. This year’s highlight came when the girls won the section V title after defeating Plum in the playoffs. The team also made it to the second round of WPIAL before being eliminated by Greensburg Central Catho- lic. The team was very strong from the start. Their competitive spirit, rigorous training, and experience contributed to their winning season. Leading performers who formed the backbone of the team included two sophomores; Carolyn Pierce and Sue Roberts, junior, Linda I lanlon and senior Cheryl Draves. Linda Byers, Sue Luck and Barb Hoetzlein added to the depth of the team and contributed many points. In the section V singles, Carolyn Pierce came in third. She and Sue Roberts also placed 2nd in the section doubles and qualified for WPIALS, where they lost in the quarter finals. Through the season, Gavin Chafin and Most Valuable Runner, John Thomas, led the strong pack to their many victories. Not far behind were Greg Sherman and Darin Uhrig. Rick McGee also contributed to the team’s winning season. Seniors, Bryan Stone, Stan Kljucaric, Scott Stevens, Most Improved Runner, Mark Steimer, and Freshman John Consbruck pro- vided the tremendous depth of the team. The team began their season with some early dual meet victories. They then proceeded to win every major invitational including the competi- tive Central Catholic Invitational. They de- stroyed every opponent with case and went on to win the WPIAL Qualifier and the WPIAL Championships, and finally the PIAA meet with a 106 point margin over the second place team. They proved that they w-ere the best in the entire state with the performances of John (12th), Gavin (13th), Greg (21st), Darin (37th), and Rick (54th). Individuals also shined at States with Ed Chow and Rich Fabian swimming the 100 breast- stroke. Rich posted an 8th place finish. Swim- ming the 50 freestyle, Cindy Rose took 7th place. The real story, however, was Michelle Chow, a freshman who looks to be a definite key to Gate- way’s success for the next few years. She took first in the 50 freestyle and set an impressive state record in the 100 freestyle. Michelle then added to Gateway’s post season success as she swept the 50 and 100 freestyles at States. V Girls’ Basketball Managers: Lisa Jenkins, Missy Bailey, Rich Minor, Angela Watson Girls’ Basketball 1 3 Every year varsity sports teams are invariably compared with the group that preceded them. The 1982-83 Gator Girls’ basketball team was hardly an exception to the rule, and they had some tough acts to follow. After all, dream players like Lee Repasky, Diane DeGurian, and Eileen Damratowski are not easily replaced or forgotten. But somehow, Coach Ron Davis pulled together another brilliant squad of roundball talents and sent them all the way to W.P.I.A.L. and later state competitions, where they played in classic Gateway form-high scoring offense and unsurmountable defense. This year’s team had its share of inevitable standouts, whose abilities and charisma filled the stands with ardent fans both home and away. Undeniably the most widely acclaimed duo (and deservedly so) was that of Laurie Bciriger and Denise Garvin who spurred their co-horts on to greatness with their leadership, sportsmanship, and sheer talent on the hardwood. These two seniors were backed up wonderfully by Joann Beatty, Elaine Boyle, Tanya Maten, and Barb Beck, who will be back next year to insure a solid foundation for the 1983-84 squad. Although they were eluded by a state championship that loomed just past their fingertips, this group of young women proved that they surely had what it took to win the hearts and attention of their high school and community. Congratulations to Coach Davis and company, and best wishes for continued success to all the graduating seniors and the underclassmen who will take their positions. And what a season it was as the team shook the W.P.I.A.L. predictions of their mediocre perfor- mance, and finished off the year with an impressive record of 13-7. Their outstanding record led them to W.P.I.A.L. playoffs for the first time in many years, and though the team performed exceptionally well, they unfortu- nately lost to Aliquippa at the Pitt Field House. Although they lost several brillant players to graduation last year, the squad regrouped. Seniors, Ron Wincko, Karl Kutz and Joel Williams led their team both on the court and off, while Junior center Kevin Harvey contributed to the high scoring efforts of the team. As one of the top scoring W.P.I.A.L. centers, Kevin is sure to be a major asset to the 1983-84 Gators. Congratulations on a job well done! Boys’ Basketball 157 1982-83 could have been called “The Year of the Sen- iors,” as upperclassmen on both the Girls’ and the Boys’ Track Teams reigned supreme. But how could they miss, with the combined brilliance of Holly Fugger, Beth Baird, and Dana Carl on the women’s squad and John Thomas, Gavin Chafin, and Darin Uhrig for the men? These individuals led their respective mates not only in track and field, but in the rules of sportsmanship which contributed greatly to each of their individual successes. Coach LaBuff should not only be commended for the fine athletes he homed to perfection or his winning seasons, but for the influence that his leadership and determination had on his team through the years. The superstar seniors are a tribute to their talent and his coaching. To top off the track’s outstanding season, congratulations to the Boys’ Track for making second place in the W.P.I.A.L. But they did it all right and they did it with class. Our mighty Gator Baseball team overcame all odds capturing the Section 4AAA Championship and two wins in playoff competi- tion. These fine young men under the leadership of first year coach and Coach of the Year, Regis Giles, put together one of the finest baseball seasons in many years at Gateway. Boasting a record of 20-6 overall, the Gators earned a 4th place in the WPIAL. They finished regular season play with an impressive 18-4 record. Outstanding pitching was the name of the game all season long and was evident in the likes of two Seniors, Greg Garofolo and Tim McDowell. Greg finished regular season play with a 7-1 record and a 1.40 ERA. Juniors Dickie Engel and Derek Greico also contributed to the impressive records as together these 4 men struck out 159 batters in 160 innings. Although the Gators depended on a masterful pitching staff, the team also put together some outstanding offensive efforts. Timely hits were a key and were provided by seniors Rob Wilshire at 3rd base, Greg Ribar at shortstop, John Dilucente at 2nd base, Gary Dinzeo at 1st base, Dave Slone at catcher, and Dave Mireles, Tony Cima, and Ricky King in the outfield. The fine talents of all these men took them to playoff victories. However, the invitation to the state playoffs was not to be extended when Laural Highlands closed the door on our Gators. From the 1st game to the last, our girls fought together as a team to overcome what everyone thought would be just a mediocre softball season. With the loss of a few girls to graduation and the absence of a few players who didn’t come out for the team, first-year coach Chuck Riley had a little rebuilding to do. The beginning weeks were dilligently spent running laps, sprints, and every softball drill imaginable in an effort to mold our team into what Coach Riley demanded — a top class organization. The hard work did pay off because top class is exactly what we were. The girls never gave up in any situation and even in the case of their three losses, they always went down fighting. Few will forget the come-from-behind victory over defending champion, Penn Hills. Down 14-9 in the last inning, the Gator Gold came through with a string of hits to clinch a 16- 14 victory. This same teamwork was evident in unforgettable comc-from-bchind victories over Kittanning, Burrell, and Churchill. The Gator diamond was defensively sound. Senior Jeanine Heasley took care of pitching and 1st base while young Freshman Liz Gogniat contributed added depth with her pitching prowess and left field duties. Senior Mylene Samek and Sophomore Barb Beck anchored down 3rd base and 2nd base respectively. Junior Sharon Davis provided talent at left field and 1st base while Senior Kelley Loughran covered almost unlimited ground in center field. The infield just wouldn’t have been as strong as it was if it wasn’t for the awesome range of Senior shortstop Kendall Trexler. Providing the final key to a solidified defense were Juniors Tracy Barto and Toni Hysong sharing the right field and catching duties. The Gators 8 game winning streak was a highlight in their impressive season. With two teams making the playoffs from each section, they had optimistic hopes of qualifying but finished in third place with a 13-3 record behind Valley and Highlands who tied for 1st place. The Gators ended their season in true Gator fashion, however, with 24-3 win over arch rival Penn Hills. Coach Riley and his girls had nothing to be ashamed of because they were truly a first class organization from start to finish. To start the ball rolling, SGA sponsered “Spirit Week,” five days during which everyone participated by wearing the designated theme clothing. During that time we were seen alternately wearing favorite hats, 1950’s attire, tee-shirts, our best finery, and black and gold on the day of the big game. And what a game it was as the Gators tamed the McKeesport Tigers 19 13 in a highly contested battle, highlighted by the performances of Joe Edelstein and Kevin Bache. Previous to the game, the capacity crowd was treated to the traditional parade as the Senior class and their “Garfield” float won the float competition. And of course, what Homecoming parade would be complete without a queen? For this special occasion, there were eight queens, as former royal ladies returned to their Alma Mater to join in crowning their successor. Making up the court this year were Mary Jean Carr, Megan Dorrycott, Gina Gentile, Trish Hill, Mia Orlando, Lauren Sutcliff, and Nancy Toman, with Tina Kljucaric as sophomore representative and junior representative Shari Smeltz. Finally, after nerve-wracking moments, Gina Gentile was crowned queen, continuing the Gateway tradition of charm, intelli- gence, and undeniable beauty. The week was enhanced by the annual dance in the LGI. So the Homecoming was truly perfect for the silver anniversary year, with Spirit Week success, an important win for the football team, and an elegant queen. 4W This year Gateway’s SGA added the annual “Student Activities Fair” to the growing calendar of autumn events. It was held in the courtyard during lunch and enabled all of the clubs and activities of Gateway to set up a display and to introduce themselves to everyone. The Fair was a huge success capped by the raffling off of a giant stuffed Garfield. Student cooperation and appreciation promised to make this event a definite must for the future. u Actmlut Fair 211 This November the five Gateway choirs com- bined for the “Mostly Pops” concert, a special performance that featured selections from the ’7o’s and ’8o’s, as well as choreography. Also included were five solo spots. Among them were renditions of “Jessie’s Girl” and “Endless Love.” The two nights of the performance were incredi- bly successful, the final evening being sold-out. Mr. Bevan and his choirs should be quite proud of their achievement. 216 Pops Concert Pops Concm 217 Shouting, cheering, black and gold, and school spirit all come together to make Gateway pep assemblies something very special. A strange spell seems to fall over all of us GHS students when we’re huddled together chanting with the cheerleaders and yelling to our favorite gridiron heroes, a spell that changes us from scholars to football fanatics and loyal Gator fans. This year, the assemblies tried to get our team psyched up to do battle with the enemies, and their winning record proves that pep did the trick. 218 Pcp Assembly Millard who? Thanks to Doctor Michael Schultz and his A.P. History classes, never again will anyone from Gateway have to ask that question. Millard- What’s-His-Name was our 13th President, and as a tribute to this quite anonymous leader Doc Schultz and company held ‘‘Millard Fillmore Day” in January to recognize and salute the old unknown. Included in the festivities were a “Millard Fillmore Look Alike Con- test”, won by Rob Quel, and dramatic readings by Tina Cacolice and Aaron Schwartz. Hopefully, the local and even national coverage received by this event will pre- vent anyone from forgetting uh . . . Millard Fillmore in the future. Under the direction of Mr. Reed, Mr. Dunlap, and Mr. Sma- lara, the groups played to a very responsive audience and completed several difficult pieces including “Stars and Stripes” and “Chicago Medley.” All involved instrumen- talists deserve sincere congratula- tions for a production well-worth seeing. o o CQ Band Concert 221 HALLOWEEN HALLOWEEN HALLOWEEN HALLOWEEN HAH When Gateway students met weird and frighten- ing creatures in the hall in late October they weren’t shocked; in fact, they kept a sharp lookout for the participants in this year's Halloween contest. Doug Palley as Mr. Petrillo won first place for originality, and Lora Holliday and Kathy Gomrick, dressed as batteries, won best costume design. The Jungle Women were awarded first place for best group, and John Cornelius took first place as a woman. Linda Nicholson won for best use of black and gold. Other Halloween activities included a pumpkin carving contest, won by the band. This Halloween was defi- nitely the best ever. Halloween 22 CHRISTMAS CHRISTMAS CHRISTMAS CHRISTMAS CHRISTMAS You’d better watch out, you’d better not cry! Christmas time at Gateway is great, that’s why! Yes, once again holiday spirit reigned (or should we say “snowed”?) supreme and everyone got caught up in the season to be jolly. Though the (almost) Annual Anything Goes was cancelled, the yearly collection drive for Children’s Hospital sponsored by SGA went on and the elves in all of their red and green finery jangled their money cans pleasantly past decorated doors in order to spread Christmas cheer to the less fortunate. A new element to the celebrating came in the form of the “Winter Bash” dance sponsored by the senior class, which proved to be a huge success. So, between the donut and candy cane sales, Portal holiday greetings and music department concerts, Christmas ’82 really was a time of good cheer. i24 Christmas Christ nus 21 This year the Tres Chic club spon- sored a pre-prom spring fashion show for interested members of the student body. Attendence was impressive, and the audi- ence enjoyed the original designs modeled by Gateway’s very own “cover girls” and the tuxedoes displayed by their handsome escorts. 1 lopefully, this success will insure another fashion show next year. 226 Fashion Show The annual winter choral concert, “Voices of Joy,” proved once again a welcome addition to the holiday sea- son. Under the direction of Mr. Ron Bevan, Gateway’s five choirs, along with the Madrigal troupe, performed for the receptive capacity audience on Friday, December 17. The highlight of the evening was the traditional ren- dition of “Hallelujah Chorus” from I landel’s Messiah, during which all of the choir members and the Gate- way alumni in attendance filled the auditorium with their joyous voices. Voices of Joy 227 VOICES OF JOY VOICES OF JOY VOICES OF JOY VOICES OF JO] Who says that New Orleans has the best March Gras? Here at Gateway, the annual February event is always a big splash, and it provides an opportunity for the girls to ask their guys for a date. This year, Conley’s Motor Inn was the site of Stan Kljucaric’s crowning as Mardi Gras King, after which he and his date, Renee Smulczenski along with all the other couples in atten- dance, danced to the music of Harvest. As is custom, a great time was had by all at the SGA sponsored event. 228 Mardi Gras o o § 5 O Gateway's many musical groups provide a fine variety of musical entertainment. This year our or- chestra provided us with several concerts featuring everything from pop to classical music. With the aid of concert mistress Michele Weaver and conducter Mr. Moyer, the orchestra performed well throughout the year. 2}o Orchesira Concert Once again the Gateway Choirs put together a good show. The music was featured by Cho- rale, Mixed, Men’s, Senior Women’s, Sopho- more Girl’s, and Madrigal Choirs. For their last concert students from men’s put together a Bar- ber Shop Octet and sang a traditional barber shop song called “Baby Face.” The other choirs sang German, French, and Italian songs which added a touch of Europe to the performance. The concert came to its traditional end when tears filled the eyes of seniors as they sang their final Alma Mater.” Senior Honors Concert. Although several squads of spiking and serving novices graced the Gateway courts in hopes of walking away victors, the undisputed champions were the Bueche Team. Headed by captain John Bueche, their trophy-winning group consisted of Dale Adams, Jeff Baxter, Jeff Bennett, Salil Doshi, Julie Greer, Paige Laughlin, Diane O’Donnell, and Leslie Pelecovich. The less squeamish students and teachers lined up nervously in the auxiliary gym, waiting for their chance to donate the gift of life. Gateway’s strong participation in this community-minded event just goes to prove that our student body believes in service to others as a vital motivation of today. 2 44 Blood Drive Once again, the seniors subjected themselves to the often comic oppression of their classmates as they leased themselves out for a day as servants. The ‘masters more often than not took full advantage of their once in a lifetime opportunity and made the most of their period of glory by demanding public homage and embarrassing costumes from their bondaged subjects. Congratulations to the senior council — You’ve done it again, gang! 246 Bondage Day Traditionally the Senior Dinner Dance, the last official evening together before commence- ment for the soon-to-be graduates, is an event that provides many good memories for years to come. This year’s gathering of the twenty-fifth anniversary class was no different. Held at the Churchill Valley Country Club, the dinner dance was an opportunity to come together as friends, offer best wishes to all and enjoy fine cuisine and good music. Amidst all of that, the Senior Superlatives were presented to this year’s standouts in twenty-five unique categories. The night was fun-filled for all and attendence was impressively high.
