To what thin melody Does it dance? What lost note vibrates In me? From the past or the future? Memory Or Presentiment? Anne Morrow Lindbergh Sophomores Sophomore class officers: Chuck Ainsworth, Treasurer; Judy Klipa. President; Judy Landay, Vice President; Teri Campo, Secretary. The first thing a sophomore learns at GHS is never to admit that he is a sophomore, especially to someone who even faintly resembles an upperclassman. After the initial shock and total confusion of the first few days, the new student eventually settles down into the boring routine of a trivial and uneventful life: racing from class to class, falling down stairs, slamming lockers on fingers, and dodging teachers who are seeking nonexistent hall passes. Being a sophomore means being on the short end of seniority. But never fear — the top is only two years away! For me to try to classify something so complex as an individual human being merely demonstrates my shallowness. A judgment of another person is an abstraction that adds qualities that are not there and leaves out what is unique about him. If I classify someone I turn him into a thing. The only way for me to contact this other person is to experience him, not to think about him ' Hugh Prather ri ;in U lii-i V Walt Disney Salutes America was the theme of this year's Homecoming weekend. The parade on Thursday, October 14 cir- cled South Junior High and ended in the GHS stadium. The judges awarded first place to the large Mickey Mouse head that the senior class constructed. After- wards, the cheerleaders had their annual bonfire in the student parking lot. Par- ticipants and spectators from the parade gathered around it, rallying for the Fri- day night football game. The scheduled game had to be postponed, however, because of rain. When it was finally played, the Ga- tors tied Highlands, 7-7. The skies had cleared by Saturday night, and the cou- ples in the LGI danced to the sound of King Solomon. The play in- volved an intellectual ex- Secretary of State, William Russell, who was competing for the presidential nomina- tion against a ruthless politi- cian named Joseph Cantwell. Each candidate discovered lu- rid scandals in his opponent's past. Cantwell deviously plot- ted to use his findings to de- stroy Russell. Russell, however, was too scrupulous to reveal his antagonist's se- cret. At the last minute, Rus- sell, in an effort to uphold his political values, discarded his information and threw his votes to the dark horse candi- date. Hence, neither of the original candidates captured the election. The major cast members were Adam Rostoker as Wil- liam Russell, Tom Butcavage as Joseph Cantwell, Bob Higgs as President Hockstader, Marcia Williams as Alice Rus- sell, and Jackie Koscelnik as Mabel Cantwell. Julia Titus, a senior, and Kris Kridler, a junior, assisted Mr. Keith Davis in directing the play. ri ii i u -I i A new and exciting sports” team joined the Gateway athletic depart- ment this year. On October 9, while hanging around Burger King, a group of jun- ior girls challenged some senior girls to a game of powder puff tackle football. After many hours of rigor- ous training, coached by the Gateway Gators, the two teams were ready to meet. Under the omen of pouring rain, the girls played on October 24. By the end of the fourth quar- ter, the super senior girls had seized the victory, 6-0. Row 1: J. Kuehn, P. Pugliano, J. Santini, C. Macaluso, N. Burgess. A. Angelo. R. Robl. Row 2: A. Palermo. L. A panel of reporters — Bill Bell, Audrey McCartney, Abbie Goodman, Patty Wilk, Judy Murray, Rony Yedidia, Eva Nenicka, and Sue Singer — fired questions at candi- dates Jimmy Carter (Gary Latshaw) and Jerry Ford (Bob Harris). The issues discussed provided an insight into vital national affairs. First place Ran- di Belkin went undefeated in three seasons of league play and was seeded top in the sectional tournament. A defeat in the final round by Cathi Canuti from Franklin thrust her into second place. Randi was the only player from Gate- way to advance to the W.P.I.A.L. tour- nament held at Mt. Lebanon High School. Unseeded, she played four matches in two days and again found herself opposite Cathi Canuti in the final round. This time Randi triumphed with a 6-2, 6-2 victory to capture the W.P.I.A.L. Singles Championship. She also attended the State championships in Shippensburg in May. Row 1: A. Silverblatt. K. The girls spiked their way to a 4-9 record under the guiding lights of Coach Vorkapich and Coach Ga- rone. Graduate Dan Chin also donated much time and experi- ence in aiding the girls in improv- ing their basic skills. Many sore arms and bruised knees resulted from their deter- mined blocks and missile-like dives across the floor to stop bru- tal spikes of the opposition. The high point scorers were Cathy Boyer with 87 points and Patty Taylor with 79. Most of these girls have de- voted years to swimming to attain powerful, accurate strokes. The work paid off for six of our outstand- ing swimmers who qualified for the W.P.I.A.L. Swim Competition. The participants included Lisa Phelps, Patty Bieno, Ann Papa, Janice Man- heim, Sandy Taylor, and Joyce Her- witt. As a team they finished sixth, placing above rivals Norwin and Penn Hills. Individually, Sandy Tay- lor placed third in the 200 meter Freestyle and Patty Bieno came in third in the 100 meter Breast stroke. Linda Zauper ■ Juniors Junior class officers: Kevin Graham, President: Jayne Levenson, Vice-President: JoAnne Almasi. Secretary; Rick Sabol. Treasurer. Stuck in the middle, or getting the best of both worlds. A junior can look at high school either way. You can be stuck in the middle . . . Like when nobody mistakes you for a senior the one time you're skipping seventh period with your senior friends . . . Or when you have a bad case of senioritis — in March of your junior year ... Or when you do something wrong and someone says, You should know that, you're not a little sophomore anymore. ... Or when you don’t get to All- State whatever because either it’s the senior’s last chance, or the sophomore needs the experience ... Or when you’re stuck in a class you really don’t want to take but you are because you need the material for SAT’s ... Or when you are bombarded with college catalogues, guest speakers on colleges and jobs — and you are faced with a big decision that sophomores don’t have to worry about for another year ana seniors have already made. But there are also the times when you can get the best of both worlds . . . Like when you get to do something extraordinary that most seniors never even do ... Or when you can drive off school grounds just for the sake of learning how to drive... Or when you can say Just wait till next year” when Penn Hills beats the brains out of your basketball team ... Or when you change your mind about what you want to do and can still change your choice of colleges ... Or when the seniors are crying at graduation and you can think that you still have another year to be with all your friends. Winter Of '77 THIS WINTER WAS STAYING HOME FROM SCHOOL AND: — eating dinner while wearing mittens. — my father sitting in front of the never-ending fire, wearing a red tassle cap. — tuning in to Jack Bogut at 5:00 a.m. to hear the complete list of school closings. — crawling back in a freezing bed after hearing Gateway on the list. — fighting over who will walk the dog. — putting a little sweater and tiny rubber boots on the dog. — digging the dog out of the ten- foot snowdrift he just dove into. — trying to get out of taking out the garbage. — getting lost in a million af- ghans. — acting like a little kid in the snow. — saying you'll shovel the side- walk tomorrow. — turning your thermostat down to 62 degrees and watching your Cocoa Puffs freeze over. Mardi Gras '77 pro- vided a chance for the girls to pick their fa- vorite guys. The large number of attending couples indicates that the Women's Move- ment is alive and well in GHS. Originally sched- uled for February 12, the dance was post- poned until February 19 because of poor weather conditions. The tropical decora- tions in the Tiki Ter- race Room at Conley's Motor Inn provided an exotic atmosphere. In this romantic aura, the couples rocked to the music of the band Traction. The highlight of the evening was the crowning of Jim Gra- vante as Mardi Gras King, chosen by Gate- ways students from a group of nine candi- dates. n-i LI I H r i nr U ID Row 1: B. Allen. D. As a whole, the team placed third in the Section 8 Tournament. Yonnie Kratsas was voted as the most valuable player for 1976-77 wrestling team. Kratsas ended up his spectacular season with an 18-1 record at 145 pounds; he had a 72-13 record lifetime. He was the Section 8 champion in 1974, 1976, and 1977 and runner up in Section 8 in 1975. Yonnie placed fourth in the WPIAL tournament in both 1974 and 1976. He was the West Penn Conference Champ in 1974, 1975, and 1977 and was runner up in 1976. Yonnie won awards this season as the Most Valuable Player, the most total-points, and the most pins. Other individual standouts were John Elko's 11-2-2 record. He also received the best take-down percentage award in 1977. Jeff Weil received runner-up in the 167 weight class at the West Penn Con- ference in 1977. John Mulgrave, 126, won by decision over Steve Petrina of Churchill 3-2. Petrina went on to be the section champ of the 126 class in 1977. Jimmy Sattler tied Dee Bloom 1-1. Bloom, who wrestled for Steel Valley, was the WPIAL champ and a state qualifier. The two main objectives of the Gateway Rifle Team are to improve individual rifle shooting skills and to enjoy the sport of shooting competitively. Each team fires at ten targets per match and the five best scores are recorded for the team score. This year, the sharpshooters finished with a 0-1 1 record. However, even though the rifle team had limited practice time, it still maintained a good atti- tude and never gave up. Row 1: K. Fun, L. Johnston. R. Sable, E. Rudman. P. These dedicated students braved crude comments and dodged flying objects in their struggle to sell the 1977 edition of the yearbook. Again this year the Portavian business staff set a sales record. More ads, patronages, and pa- trons were sold this year than any year before! By canvasing the community, yearbook staff mem- bers sought sponsorship in order to fund the production of the yearbook. 1 :ii: i.i :i SPRING Who would be crazy enough to . . . . . . suffer the consequences of chapped lips from orange drink with too much sugar? . . . withstand the pain of swollen hands and aching legs? . . . endure 18 LONG hours of torturous dancing? SUBJECT TO CHANGE 11.11 1 I IU B Subject to Change, a farce comedy written by Jules Tosca, was first produced in Chicago in the summer of 1972. The play revolved around two elderly sisters, Madeline and Gertrude Basset, and a go-between neighbor, Joanne. Gertrude's decision to be married to Erwin Leeds threw the household into complete confusion. Madeline's unsuccessful attempts to prevent the marriage made for excellent comedy. Directed by Mr. Keith Davis who was assisted by Tom Butcavage and Sandy Triponey, Gateway's first theater-in-the-round production featured Elaine Zecher as Madeline Basset, Julia Titus as Gertrude Basset, Jodie Matthews as Joanne, Bob Higgs as Erwin Leeds, Janet Hufford as Mrs. Leeds, and Don Wolter as Pignitelli. n I Achtung! IIJH I IL The SGA-sponsored Superstars” was a contest of athletes with versatile talents. Of the many who did go out for the contest, only six players were chosen to place. BOYS: First: Nevin Edwards — a football running back, proved to be the most versatile athlete around. Second: Steve Fishman — track star, won Ihe obstacle course in the preliminaries and finals. Third: Paul Ritter — track star, a talented athlete, a good candidate to win the decathalon. GIRLS: First: Pam Lewis — very versatile, basketball and softball team, won the softball throw. Second: Diane Ritter — a speedster, like her brother. Third: Linda Valcho — girls' track, won the 440 yard dash. !U I kM Row 1: D. Mitchell, D. Altman. Row 2: 6. Jordan, P. Perrota, H. Abouleish. D. With the help of a fine junior high prospect Pete Perrotta, who became the number one ranked player on the team; two sophomores, Hassan Abouleish and Dan Altman; and two first year seniors, Jim Stuck and Dana Mitchell, the team started the season hoping to improve last year's record of 7-5. After a beginning match upset by Edgewood, the team settled down losing only twice to Fox Chapel, twice to Churchill, and once to Penn Hills. The first match with Penn Hills produced the first victory in Gateway Tennis history over Penn Hills 3-2. Perrotta, Jordan, and Stuck swept the three points in singles. The final Churchill match was the most exciting of the '77 campaign. The team lost by losing the final point of a tie-breaking third set in the third singles match. The team, coached by Robert Douds, wrapped up the season with an 8-6 record, the most victories ever posted by a Gateway Boys' Tennis team. • track. a.ck- track track- track. ■ V « 7. Row 1: J. The outstanding track member this year was Lyndon Byrd who com- peted in the State Meet for the 100 yard dash. Mike Brown was the star field man. Mike leaped to a personal high of six feet two inches in the high jump and he also took first place in the decath- alon. The outlook for the future is bright with a host of young per- formers. IIJ I I I To any other team, a record of 18-2 would mean a section title. But to the Gateway Gators it meant second place, and no playoff games of any type. With only two losses all season, both to the Penn Hill Indians, the Gators were contenders for the playoffs until they saw their chances go up in smoke in the final game of the season with a 6-3 loss to Penn Hills. Despite the losses, many great achievements were set during the 1977 season. Tim Conroy, a southpaw junior, hurled back-to-back no hit ball games against Turtle Creek and St. Anselm. During the T.C. game, Tim wiffed 22 batters in seven innings and won 6-0. The extra strikeout came with the Gator catcher dropping the third strike and the batter reaching first on an error. In the St. Anselm game, the Gators won 9-1 as Tim struckout 15 batters. Throughout the season, Tim had 73 strikeouts in just 35 innings to have a better than two strikeouts an inning average. John Csefalvay, a left-handed junior, experienced another fine year of pitching. John compiled a 6-1 record, and a glittering 1.16 E.R.A. to go along with his staff leading strikeout record of 79 wiffs. John also led the Gators in hitting with a .462 average. Bill Emerick, another lefty junior, was probably one of the most underrated players in the pitching rotation. With an 8-0 record this season. Bill ran his E.R.A. to an unbelieveable 0.70, with only five earned runs in 50 innings. As fifth batter in the Gator order, he compiled a fine .394 average. Other big names that contributed to the Gator's great success were Chett Williams and Mike Nicoletti. Chett led the Gators with 25 R.B.I.s, and was second on the team with a .461 average. He also led the team in hits (29), runs scored (25), and committed only one error all season. Mike was another fine underrated player. He hit a solid .430 average to rate him as the fourth highest hitter on the team. Mike banged out two homers towards the end of the year and he only struck out three times all season. . The entire team consisted of only twelve players who always had to play their hardest. Due to interruptions in the season caused by weather, the girls then had to play half of the sea- son, five games, in one week where the temperature ranged from 30 to 80 degrees. However, they never cried defeat and instead ended the week with three wins and two losses. With the fine coaching of Miss Shipley, the Girls' Softball Team compiled an 8-6 season record. The climax of the sea- son occurred during the Swissvale-Gateway game which went into one extra inning. Then with bases loaded by Gate- way girls, first year player Cathy Boyer smacked a grand slam home run to win the game. Gateway was the only team in the section to beat Swissvale. Row 1: M. Crnic, P. Kubeldis SENIORS Senior Class Officers: Patty Terebessy. Secretary; Cheryl Kardos. Treasurer; Gloria Catalane. Vice-president; Pam Metz, President. Sometime between first and twelfth grade, the idea that the senior year is the best and most exciting is planted in the minds of unsuspecting students. Senior year — the reward for the seemingly endless years in school. Being a senior can be quite an experience. This exalted year in high school involves many difficult tasks: deciding the number of senior pic- tures and graduation announcements to order so that Grandma, Grand- pa, Aunt Mable, Uncle Joe, and Cousin Mary, whom you have never seen, are not left out; keeping track of the number of days until graduation; planning the biggest graduation party ever; going to first period instead of going out to breakfast; and, of course, keeping sane during those long, drawn-out days in May and June. Senior year is also full of little surprises. The most shocking is finding out that you owe ten cents on a library book and cannot graduate until the fine is paid in full. The best part of being a senior is walking through the big H to receive an empty diploma cover. Kim McClain Class of ’77 Douglas W. And when you have reached the mountain top, then you shall begin to climb. The time I have spent at Gateway High School has given me the best opportunity to under- stand a different way of relating to people, to be aware of differences in edu- cational systems and a per- fect time to meet and make new friends and have good times together. All of these experiences are an impor- tant part in understanding a different culture. Hopefully, I have been able to express myself and my customs so that my friends had the opportunity to learn about various as- pects of my culture and especially about myself. I sincerely would like to thank everyone: teachers, students, administration, etc. for helping to make my stay a memorable one, and special thanks to all my friends for making my stay in America an enjoyable as well as an unforgettable year. Ignacio Herreros on H—11—I Well, I’ve had dreams enough for one And I’ve got love enough for three I have my hopes to comfort me. I got my new horizons to see me. But I’m never gonna lose your precious gift It will always be that way. Cause I know I’m gonna find my own Piece of mind someday. Where is this place that we have found Nobody knows where we are bound I long to hear, I need to see And I’ve shed tears too many for me. On the wing, soaring free Spread your wings I’m beginning to see Out of mind, far from you Beyond the reach of nightmare come true. P0 ill II i on i _ii—i TALENT SHOW Practice, hard work, and determination was all put together by individuals on June third as S.G.A. put on their first talent show in a long time. With a good crowd on hand in the auditorium, it was good to say that every act was well done, and it was done professionally. Unfortunately though, only six win- ners were chosen in a cast that included nineteen acts. The contestants were put into three categories that were: vocalist, non-vocalist, and group. The acts were judged on their appearance, act performance, and applause. The winners were: VOCALIST: 1st — Terri Wheeler (Summertime) 2nd — Patti Goff (The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face) NON-VOCALIST: 1st — Chuck Conway (Impressions) 2nd — Jerry Ross (I’m Free) GROUP: 1st — Eddie Wilner and Dan Loughran (Who’s on First?) 2nd — Pam Wilson, Theil Young, Laural Locke, and Arlene McDonald (Rocky) The judges were James Olson, Mrs. Kathy Mon- tana, and Al Monzo. A lot of work was contributed by: Ron Bevan, Tom Boory, Keith Davis, Lana Gutt- man. Sue Krenke, Kelly Norris, Terry Creaturo, Dayna Hollis, and Eric Poach. Their work was deeply appreciated. DINNER DANCE What a perfect way to end the year! Over 200 members of the graduating class of '77 met at the Great Gatsby in Har- marville the night before graduation, June 6, 1977, to cele- brate an end and a beginning. The S.G.A. sponsored Dinner Dance, originally scheduled to end at 11:00 PM. lasted until 12:30 at the demand of the dancers. The evening provided seniors the opportunity to reminisce and say good-bye to classmates of three, six, and even twelve years. □u J I SENIOR SUPERLATIVES Most Studious Gregg Croft Patty Cacolice Best Leader Gary Latshaw Ann McKenna Best Personality Chett Williams Cheryl Kardos Class Couple Billy Cole Janet Santini Best Dressed Yonnie Kratsas Nancy Hickey Best Musician Todd Dahlstrom Amy Bartoli Most Flirtatious Jim Sattler Leslie Shaw Best Athlete Most Likely to Succeed Greg Jordan Robin Sheridan Best Looking Jim Gravante Lynn O’Brien Friendliest Joe Consbruck Gloria Catalane Class Clown Chuck Conway Cheryl Macaluso Most Creative Steve Gallagher Kim Elcan Most Versatile George Klipa Ellen Lehr Most Talkative Harry Irwin Mary Flegal Most School Spirit Tom Kalkstein Sharmell Allen Eric Poach Dayna Hollis Student Who Has Done the Most for the Class of ’77 Adam Rostoker Pam Metz oc 1.11-1 .52 Porlio , . zU 4 rvnau ical 3f rn rt+rt£ fTi+n ' ' cM ay f0rusny, h nata rv Aun tat 4r ri y -Aww J a g oc£ S efrruU« l' S-y uyt on y Graduating seniors not only re- ceived their diplomas on June 7,1977 but were graced with a miracle.
