We yearn to achieve, in some way, a victory that will last with us forever. Superlatives 57 I never lived away from my family before coming to the United States. Things are different from what I ex- pected. There is a great deal of difference between cultures. I had to learn everything right from the beginning as if I were a baby. Relationship between young people and old people, boys and girls, teachers and student is very different here. People are less formal and more friendly. I really enjoyed friendly relationship with teachers, and even with students in classes. I even got to be friends with ladies in cafeteria and janitors. I also felt comfortable partici- pating in classes, sports teams, clubs, and various school events. Cheering at football games, teasing teachers, making a snowman, and riding school bus with friends are great fun that I would have never experienced in my own country. In adjusting myself to new customs and environment, in learning new things and new language, I want to say a very special thank you to all my friends to teachers who have always been there to help me on both my good days and bad days. I am really grateful to all of you for sharing this unforgetable year with me. And I feel very fortunate that I was chosen to come to Monroeville and Gateway High. Sayuri Shimizu (Sy) Japan, 1975-1976 58 AFS On June 2, 1976, 800 Seniors graduated from Gateway Senior High School. It was the Bicentennial Class and the largest to ever graduate from Gateway. Student speakers Pat Castagnero, President of the Senior Class, and Christine Salm, Valedictorian, covered both the past achievements of the class and its future expecta- tions. The ceremony moved quickly, and before night- fall, Mr. Vurgich announced Class, you are dismissed, and it was all over except the partying. The highpoint of the season was a victory in the Central Catholic Invitational in a field of 48 teams, and a third place finish in a field of 92 teams at the McQuaid Invitational. The junior varsity team was undefeated in 12 dual meets, won three invitationals, and won the J.V. W.P.I.A.L. Championship. Varsity performers who led the team to a third place finish in the W.P.I.A.L. and a fifth place finish at state finals were Seniors Tom Regotti (who was elected by his teammates as the team's outstanding runner), Ascencion Gomez, John Dumm, Roger Winstanley, and Paul Trunzo. These were two of Gateway's five wins. McKeesport, Steel Valley, and Shaler were also vanquished by the Gator Machine. 138 Sports Gateway lost to North Allegheny, Highland, and North Hills, but the most exciting game of the season, and perhaps the greatest defensive battle in Gator history was the one tie. Sports 139 Who will ever forget the night that the two greatest defensive powers in the W.P.I.A.L. cracked helmets together for four long quarters only to end in a scoreless tie? In addition to a 5-1 dual and triangular meet record, the team also attended seven invitationals taking four first place finishes, two seconds, one fourth, and finally the W.P.I.A.L. Championship. In state-wide com- petition, the Two Mile Relay team, of John Dumm, Tom Regotti, Roger Winstanley, and A.G. Gomez came in first with a time of 7:48.4. Joe Ritter took seventh in the High Jump, and Sophomore Lyndon Byrd was a semi-finalist in the 220. A.G. Gomez also competed in the 880 yd. run at state. Six Gateway Track and Field records were broken this year. Byrd tied the 220 yd. dash record in 22.5 seconds, and the 440 Yard Relay team of D.D. Mignogna, Ed Wiernicki, Mike Abrioia, and Byrd set a new record in 44.0 seconds. Mignogna, Win- stanley, Wiernicki, and Gomez also went to state competition and set the school record of 3:23.3 in the Mile Relay. Ritter set two Gateway field records by jumping 6'5Vi in the High Jump and a total of 44'6J i in the Triple Jump. The 1976 MVP's were Gomez for Track, and Ritter for Field. This year's Captains were Pat Castagnero, Mignogna, Regotti, Ritter, and Win- stanley. Congratulations to the 1976 W.P.I.A.L. Under the direction of Coaches Michaels, Filipow- ski, and Filosemi, the boys compiled a regular sea- son record of 20-5 which led them to their second consecutive Section 12 Championship. Outstanding players were Catcher-Captain Pat Sheehy, Catcher- Right Fielder Larry Mignogna, Center Fielder James Whelan, Pitcher-First-Baseman Phil Bayne, and Sophomore Pitchers John Csefalvay and Tim Con- roy. With only four graduating Seniors, the young team promises to do as well or better in '77 168 Sports i The Gators won a close W.P.I.A.L. Playoff game against Duquesne by a score of 6-5 only to have Championship hopes shattered by Washington. The 3-1 final score does not indicate the closeness of the game as the first Washington run was scored during the last inning of regular play and the other two came in extra innings. Sadly, the loss was one of chance and the Gateway boys actually played very well. Infielders Dan Goff, Henry Perriello, Pat Sheehy, Mike Nicoletti, and John Vicinski teamed up for the first triple play in Gateway history. He equated these commie hunts to the Salem witch trials, and the play he wrote showed the utter absurdity of the witch hunts. The play revolved around the accusations of young girls, and showed the even- tual breakdown of a man's good character. Directed by Mr. Keith Davis, the play was presented November 20th and 21st with Ken Fox as John Proctor, Kim Evans as Elizabeth Proctor, and Sandy Triponey as Abigail Williams. 1 TUC iriRI F t 1 1 nt KUI IdLL ► 180 The Crucible Mardi Gras... The king and his court had a special slow dance to start off the evening. Many 1976 members, how- ever, chose to care for the club's menagerie of reptiles, fish, rats, mice, and various plants rather than do re- search. The club raises funds for new equipment and plant and ani- mal food through several methods. The three largest are a spaghetti dinner, a plant-selling booth at the Monroeville Mall, and a calendar sale. The club is self-supporting, and can therefore do much more than a regular high school organization can. Members' dues, un- like other aquired funds, are pooled in an activity fund which provides for monthly activities which include par- ties, banquets, and several camping trips. A board comprised of club offi- cers and heads of the various depart- ments makes most of the major deci- sions. Mr. Vassilaros, the supervisor, provides guidance when necessary. The club consists of eight major de- partments. In the greenhouse, mem- bers learn proper plant care, how to prepare soil for various uses, how to make and propagate cuttings, and how to appreciate plants. Mr. Diller, super- visor on a voluntary basis, is a virtual plant expert. In the Aquarium Depart- ment, students learn to breed and prop- erly care for fish. Each student is respon- sible for one tank, and is judged by its cleanliness, and the health of its fish. Though relatively new, the Chemistry Department's function was to provide each student with a basic, working knowl- edge of chemical experimentation. In he Research Department, students worked in the labratories caring for rats as an introduction to research ex- periments. Members of this club took a project to competitions at Seven Springs. The Genetics Department dealt with the inheritance of physical traits by breed- ing various strains of mice. Students learned to care for animals, treat dis- eases, and prevent epidemics. The Li- brary Department, which was open to all students, maintained a large supply of current scientific magazines and books that encompassed all of the major fields of science. The Medical Club consisted mainly of students from the Nursing Anatomy Physiology classes who were interrested in a career in the Medical field. They have held seminars, visited hospitals to observe surgery, set up a mock clinic, and gave to a blood bank. The Department of Reptiles was one of the more active groups, as its subjects require constant attention. Members learn to care for and handle snakes and turtles and to distinguish different breeds. They present the reptiles to various or- ganizations and gradeschools in an effort to dispell common, inaccurate rumors about them. Row 1: D. Sabino (Treasurer), J. Brotherton (Vice-President), C. The National Honor Society is an entity whose purpose is to honor and promote four qualities: Scholarship, Service, Leadership, and Character. Each Spring, Juniors and Seniors are honored by induction as members into the Gateway Chapter of NHS. This year, approxi- mately sixty-five Juniors and sixty-five Seniors were inducted in a formal, but simple ceremony. Major NHS projects this year included: an SAT Workship for the benefit of Juniors confronting this awesome event, and trips to South Junior High to give ninth graders information about Gateway from a student's point of view. Michael Rostoker was a finalist in the North Hills Interstate Invitational Tournament for Poetry Interp., and a semi-finalist in the Central Cath- olic National Invitational Tournament for Poetry and Prose Interp. Steve Zecher placed first in Extemp, and was a trophy winner in a district competition. Outstanding speaker and member of Student Con- gress was Sarah Roll. Adam Rostoker and Eva Nenic- ka, also members of Student Congress, received the honor of Superior speakers. Michael Sorce was a trophy winner in Radio Announcing. Ken Fox, Rony Yedida, and Susan Singer were all elected as presid- ing officers for Student Congress. The Interact Club of Gateway High School is affiliated with and sponsored by the Monroeville Rotary Club. Interact is a service organization for young people. Each chartered Interact club is required to undertake one community project and one international project. This year. Interact sponsored a child in Guatama- la, operated a booth at the Bicentennial Bazaar, compiled a monthly Youth Interpage supplement to the Times Ex- press, and awarded a college scholarship. 207 n LD 70 n FHA -------------------- - PYEA The Pennsylvania Youth Education Association, better known as PYEA, is an active club in Gateway, trying to better all aspects of education. The club works with the school as well as the community. It has been involved with projects ranging from tutoring to co-sponsoring the Dance Marathon. The club acts as a means for the members to try to materialize their ideas of a better school. PYEA is not necessarily a club interested in teaching, but rather a club inter- ested in education and how to improve it in Gateway and through- out Pennsylvania. The advisor for PYEA this year was Miss Kapisak; the president was Linda Clark. Three members were elected as state or regional officers. They were Jeannine Butcavage, Tom Butcavage, and Robin Sheridan. The club was also chosen as the outstnding chapter in the Western Region. Row 7: D. Smith, R. Sheridan, J. Hurst, J. Whitmore, C. Stage Crew is another fine organization of Gateway High School. It was created when the school first opened, and has been serving the students and faculty ever since. They handle many events, such as plays, football games, swim meets, finnettes, movies, and assemblies. Without them, many events would not be possible. The organi- zation was headed this year by Rob Grossman, a three year veteran, and distinguished leader. His assistant is Bill Singleton, another three year veteran. An excellent addition to the crew this year, was Steve Kristy, a bright young man who added many fresh ideas. The preceeding Seniors will be graduating, leaving a group of dedicated Juniors, and Sophomores. Special thanks must be awarded to Mr. Machen, who retired this year after serving as Advisor since 1971. Taking his place in the middle of the year was Mr. Bevan. Good Luck! The boys on the AV Crew provide one of the greatest and most practical services to the Gateway Faculty. Theirs is the job of maintaining (storing, cleaning, and repairing) the equipment. They distribute this equipment and track down teachers who do not return it. They also video- tape and edit television shows for teachers who request the service. They are, in effect, the equipment police who try to help the entire faculty take advantage of the school's resources. Row 1: M. Parker, A. Karelitz, T. du Breuil. Row 2: D. Hand, M. Wilson, D. Under these two major responsibilities are many unpleasant tasks such as cap-and- gown measurements, collection of class dues, and other fund raising projects. The responsibilities are great and the urge to give up is ever present. Through their efforts, though, the 1976 Senior Class Officers feel that they, with the help of Mr. Winslow, have lived up to the expectations of the gradu- ating Senior Class. All a person must do is pay his three dollar club dues and be serious about skiing. This year, the club made two evening trips to Seven Springs where non-skiers received pro- fessional training and were helped by other club members. Movies were shown at the beginning of the season in order to help everyone improve his own stylistic flaws. Skiing is an exciting, rewarding, ex- hausting, stimulating, expensive, friendly, serious, and beautiful sport. Every year, more and more beginners are drawn by the challenge of the cold, white slopes. LD 7s 00 Row 1: P. Sheehy, C. Macaluso, E. Flint, D. Blass. Row 2: J. Wiesemann, M. Musser, K. Stair, A. LU u 0 X SYLV The Gateway Hockey Club, an in- dependent group of Gateway Students, which is unaffiliated with the school, dominated the W.P.I.H.L. in 1976 with an incredible regular season record of 18-0-5. Captained by Frank Crnic and Alternate Captains; Tom Miller, Paul Marcinizn, and John Liprando, they took the Central Division Title, and the W.P.I.H.L. Championship. They were runners up in the State Tournament, and finished up with a record of 24-1-5. Outstanding players were Del Kubeldis, the best goalie in the league, and John Liprando, the league's scoring leader. John was also voted the team's Most Valuable Player. Tom Miller was the M.V.P. on offense, and Frank Crnic was M.V.P. for defense. Rick Fitchwell was Rookie of the Year, and Paul Marcinizn received the Golden Gator Award. This year, three Gators; John Liprando, Frank Crnic, and Del Kubeldis, made the All Tournament Team. Its purpose was to help teach- ers with their many clerical duties, and the girls had many opportunities to type lesson plans, study guides, and tests. The members gained valuable experience per- forming these duties, and also by participating in various outside ac- tivities, such as financing projects, a Christmas party, and a Spring Ban- quet. To be a member, students must be enrolled in a high school program of Distributive Education. Chapter activities provide opportunities for: the development and understanding of a spirit of competition, a recognition of social values, an ability to communicate, individual recognition, and a realization of the responsibilities of leadership and service. Awards are given in competitive events: a creative marketing project, a display, job interview, chapter of the year, and student of the year. These awards are a realistic, helpful, and educational experience for DECA members. 213 r Cl- uj The office girls are invaluable assets to the office personnel and per- form many ap- preciated duties for them. The show is geared for the Gateway administration, faculty, and students. Each week mem- bers present a sports sched- ule, school news, club news, and a special weekly feature, the top ten hit parade of songs. This hit parade is surveyed weekly from a sophomore, junior, and senior homeroom. Mrs. Nancy Chait, Business Advisor, appointed two Business Co-editors, Tammy Ashworth and Donna Katsur, who were both very success- ful. Tammy conducted the most serious ad-campaign the Portavian has ever had, selling more ads throughout Monroeville than ever be- fore. Donna directed one of the most successful home- room collections in Gate- way's History and also organized the First Annual Yearbook Banquet. Under Miss Mary Burns, Literary Advisor, were five Literary Editors, Maureen Casile—Editer in Chief; Ruth Radakovic and Julia Titus—Layout Co-editors; Cathy Kravetz—Editor of Photography; and Debbie Lendo—Sports Editor; who all devoted much time, energy, and imagination to the making of the 1976 Portavian. Yearbook work is much more demanding than that of most high school organi- zations, and often more re- warding. Not only must we learn the basics of our own particular jobs, but also the delicate art of interacting with one another. In ad- dition to the sense of pride than accompanies a job well done, yearbook people also leave with the gifts of compromise and co-oper- ation, two of the greatest skills a high school can give, which so many students leave without. Much creativity and thoughtfulness have gone into its making, but more than anything else, this book is the product of long, tedious hours of work and a great deal of co-operation. Many more people have aided in the making of this book than meet the eye, and these are the people that we, the 1976 Portavian Editors, would like to recognize. We would like to thank the faculty for being so supportive and so understanding when we had to miss class to make our important decisions. Because of teachers like Mr. Czemerda, Mr. Drumm, Mr. Kovacic, Mr. Martin, Mrs. Niemi, Dr. Schultz, Mrs. Smith, and Mr. Werner, this book has been made carefully and with much prior thought rather than haphazardly thrown together in a last-minute rush. Mrs. Macaluso, especially, deserves credit for proof- reading our special essay. Her seal of approval bolstered everyone's confidence. The entire Gate- way Math Department should be commended for the way in which they shared the math room with the Portavian staff. We only hope that they are ready to repeat next year. Our own advisors. Miss Mary Burns and Mrs. Nancy Chait, have been very good to us. They have helped us when we needed help, guided us when we were confused, and inspired us when we were utterly disgusted. We would also like to thank our Yearbook Company Representatives, Mr. George Stuart and Mr. Larry Marshall, for all their help and guidance. They were always available and willing to do what- ever they could to aid us in our task. Our photogra- phers did an outstanding job, especially Linda Marshall, our student photographer. When we needed something special, all we had to do was ask, and the next day, it was on Miss Burns' desk. We want to congratulate our professional photographer, Mr. Russell Bohenko, on having recently finished taking pictures for his twenty-fifth yearbook. We Editors would expecially like to thank Mr. George Vurgich for the support he has given us; much more support than any past administration has ever given the Portavian. He has also been a bolster to our morale by making it clear from the very beginning that he had great confidence in us and that he was willing, actually eager, to help us in every way he could to produce one the best yearbooks in Gateway's history. Finally, and most important of all, we would like to thank Mrs. Betty Hackmann for the countless little ways in which she has helped us. It seems there was always some- one in her office for one reason or another, and though she is the busiest person in the school, she always had time to do something for the Portavian. For us, she has been like a Patron Saint of Yearbook to whom we could always turn when the chips were down. This 1976 Portavian is the work of many hands. It is a hundred ideas and a thousand long hours of changing ideas into tangible, countable pages, and sections of pages, and finally a yearbook. We, the editors are proud to have served on the staff and proud of the book that staff has produced. Most of all, however, we are grateful for the opportunity to have been a part of it all, and grateful to all those people who made it possible for us, and also to those whose support enabled us to devote enough time and group effort to our Portavian to make it one of the best Portavians in Gator history. 218 Thank You 221 222 224 C fftaratufati0n Cfajj af 976 RED COACH INN WM. The scholarship is named for a former member of the Gateway Senior High School faculty, John Galagaza. Mr. Galagaza taught social studies. In 1962 he passed away. The faculty and students thought very highly of Mr. Galagaza. He was a friend to all. Because of the great regard that the faculty had for him, they decided to name the G.E.A. scholarship in his honor. Here the character is created and paths made. Too soon our adolescence ends, and what we have is what we take with us into the uncharted future. The prospects of a nation maturing into a strong symbol of constancy and whether or not a person will leave a mark on humanity for eternity depends on these years. Destiny is not waiting for us. It is being created by us. Now. Dawn Harkett Class of '76
