A , ,533 tm' 4 Close UpfSpeech Offers Patricipation What is CLOSE UP anyway? lt's a chance to learn about government the way it really is. lt's the chance to learn about people from other parts of the country, as well as peo- ple close to home. During the week of April the lst. l984, Close Up members from Gate- way High School traveled to Wash- ington D.C. to take part in the Close Up government studies program. While in Washington, they directly questioned legislative experts as well as officials in the national gov- ernment and media personalities. As participants in the Close Up program they not only had the chance to see Washington, D.C. as few visitors do. but also to discover for themselves what makes it tick. Close Up President Dee Ware said, lt was a great way to end my high school years. In Washington Close Up members were housed in a major hotel with approximately 200 other students from other parts of the country. Vice-President Linda Park com- mented, l had a great time meeting new people from other parts of the country. Speech club competed every Sat- urday since last October in many different events. The events includ- ed original oratory, dramatic inter- pretation. humor interpretation. po- etry interpretation, debate fcross xl, debate CLincoln-Douglasb, ex- temporaneous speaking, and duet acting. There.were thirty members and twelve to fifteen were active. The officers were Co-Presidents- Venae Sears and Peter Yob, Vice- President Rick Richardson, Secre- tary-Denise Yanaga and Treasurer- Desiree Campbell. The speech club also had a the- atre on communication in March for Gateway students. They also did one for Aurora Hills Middle School students. Senior Linda Park said, This last year speech club has been a very rewarding experience and has been a lot of fun! s ii M I c i is xc Q , ik ' E Sr. Don Laughlin and Soph.
