No, it was nothing like that. This was a leap year, an election year, and the Olympics. The 'hammer' murders in Aurora everyone frightened, also. ln mid January, the LA Raiders defeated the Washington Redskins in the XVlIlth Superbowl. The Den- ver Gold began another season in February with Craig Morton as the new coach. ln mid February, the XlVth Winter Olympic games began in Sarejevo, Yugoslavia. The Ameri- cans fared ok- winning four gold, and four silver medals. The US ski team won medals for the first time ever. Bill Johnson won the gold in the mens downhill, after it was can- celed for a week due to a heavy snowstorm that hit the city earlier. Phil and Steve Mahre of Washing- ton, the twins, took the gold and silver respectively in the mens giant slalom. In womans downhill, Debbie Armstrong took the gold while Ta- mara Cooper took the silver. Den- verite Scott Hamilton won the gold in mens figure skating and returned home to a galant parade down the I6th Street mall. Torvill S Dean, the Great Britians ice dancing pride, electrified everyone with their flawless performance that earned them nine 6's and a gold medal. The Marines finally pulled out of Beirut in the beginning of March, as Americans were proud. The presi- dential election now became the big concern of everyone, as the candi- dates gained more popularity. Presi- dent Ronald Reagan, Republican, ran again, as Senator Gary Hart from Colorado tried to win out over the Reverend Jessie Jackson, the first black man ever to try and run for president, in the Democratic race. Movies of l984 included Terms of Endearment, Footloose, The Right Stuff, and Hot Dog. Michael Jackson was in the spotlight at the Grammys, as he had a record I2 nominations. He was also the Star of The American Music Awards, as he swept over all the awards. The events of l983 and I984 were very important to all of us, and they will not soon be forgotten.
