Many students showed up wearing black and white combina- tions on Wednesday, Generic Day. On the hot day of Thursday, towels, lawn chairs, Op sunwear, and suntan oil were brought and used for the students favorite day, which was Beach Bum Day. Runningback Darrel Perkins finds room in the Trojan defense. U4 Qame j of c'DCfbI1,SC Dallas Hilliar, in his first homecoming game at Gateway, defeated cross town rivals, the Central Trojans. The OIy's were in quest of their third straight homecoming victory. The Trojans were first to get on the board with a pass down the sidelines that broke for a 5I yard touchdown. The touchdown seemed to inspire the Oly defense to stiffen and make the big plays for the remainder of the game. The first came in the second quarter when defensive captain Sr. Joe Guttierez stripped the ball from a Trojan running- back and scrambled off to a 4I yard score. A two point conversion was scored by quarterback Sr. Jeff Gerkin that tied the score a 8-8 as the slow but rugged first half ended. The Oly defense al- lowed a mere 80 yards, 5l off the first scoring play. The second half was once again a defensive struggle. The Oly defense forced a punt or a tur- nover off to CentraI's every posession of the ball. But the Oly offense continued to struggle and gave the Trojans the first break of the second half. The Trojans received the ball on their 35 yard line due to a fumble by runningback Darrel Perkins. But the defense once again rose to the occasion and forced the Trojans back to their own 47 yard line with a fourth and 22. A desperate Trojan pass was intercepted by Sr. Gary Jenkins who with the help of downfield blocking returned the ball to the Oly 36 yard line. The all but forgot- ten Oly offense has one more chance. 0n a fourth and I5 situation, runningback Sr. Richard Grooms broke behind a Sr. Joey Manfre block for a I7 yard gain inside the Trojan I5 yard line. Three plays later, Sr. Jeff Gerkin drove in from the one for the winning score. Jeff Girkin runs in for the The celebration. winning score The final score. Student Life 25
