4 sv '40 City Champs Prevail After ten years as head coach, Ron England handed the wrestling program over to Bob Nelson. The first season proved to be very successful for coach Nelson. Before the start of the season, Nelson expected the Oly's to beat Au- rora Central, to place third in league, and second in districts. He accom- plished one of these goals, that being the win over Central. The 83-84 season proved to be a year of surprise for the team. The first was the return of Cris Maes to the Oly team, after a year absence with an- other school, The next was losing Jr. Paul Padilla to ineligibility. Probably the biggest surprise was the success of I85 pounder Mike Lovell and heavyweight Robert Pratt. The team started the season out with a fifth place finish in their very own Oly invitational wrestling tourna- ment. The team continued to do will at meets the The Oly regular season with an 8-3-l record. The next step for the Oly wrestlers was the two day district tournament held at Gateway high school. The team placed fifth at districts, sending three wrestlers to state. Heavyweight Rob- ert Pratt was the only Oly champion to go to state. During Districts, Senior Mike Lovell placed second in the l85 pound class, thus giving him a shot at state. Senior Pete I-lallsten. who placed third in districts won his wrestleback match, therefore allowing him to wres- tle in the state meet. A shock came to the Oly team when D6 pounder .lohn Fountain, places second in districts, but lost his wrestleback match, leaving him unable to wrestle in state.
