'Z fl 0 Young Players Gain Experience Sophomore and iunior varsity teams provide the experience needed for later varsity play. The girls' volleyball teams combined the various talents of the players to gain this experience. J.V., coached by last year's Varsity coach Jan Weeks showed some inex- perience among the many new faces. but also looked very promising. Height is one advantage the youth- ful team has. Freshmen .Chris Rosso and Christy Beavers both showed much skill on the net in blocking and hitting. ln the back row sophomore Bonnie Chadwick and freshman Sam Smith were effective in picking up the var- ious hits. Setting was the main iob of three of the team players. junior. Patty Isbell. junior, Tonya Meredith, and sopho- more Brenda Tanner. Many of the i.v. players saw varsity playing time. and often in tight spots. Experienced as a sophomore coach. Sherrie Colgan led her team to a re' spectibie showing. Composed of mostly freshmen the team learned many basic skills. After practicing throughout the season the skills became more refined. These girls will form next year's var- sity and junior varsity teams where they will represent Gateway in the Centennial League. Although this is the first time many of them have played volleyball. the girls easily equalled the competition provided by other schools. A year of learning . . .
