4 69 4' ,gs . Spirits Never Die O When most people thought of soc- cer at Gateway, they thought of a bunch of wild guys who couidn't really get a winning season together. But soccer at Gateway had improved over the years, and is becoming more and more popular. The soccer teams had many changes this year. For one, they had a new coach. Mr. Gary Gustafson replaced head coach Jim Morgan. The guys also had renewed spirit and con- fidence and looked forward to the up- coming year. They had good players and a new coach who was brining a new strategy. Unfortunately, after the first of the season, the Varsity team lost two of its best players, Srs. Alan Storm and Joe Paquet due to their footbaii responsibilities. But the team survived, and had an overall of 3 wins, and ll losses. Outstanding players on the Varsity team included Srs. Geoff Chadwick and Pat Patterson, who were also the captains. Other mem- bers of the Varsity team were: Srs. Brian Jensen, Bart Stoneback, Pat Stagner, David Gabe Chavez. and Dan Mitchke. and Sophs. Matt and Steve l-lelmke, Scott Jensen. The Jr. Varsity team didn't fair much better than the Varsity team. They had an overall record of l wins, ll losses. They had an unexperienced team, and many new players. But the lack of success did not damper their spirits. They were always confident in themseives and had alot of respect for their fellow teammates. Their mem- bers included: Monte Wise, Drue Burke, Mark Dudly, Marc Carlson, Dan Chavez, Dan Gomez, Mike Baker, Tom Gibbens, Stuart Parker, Demon Fricke, Gary Stark, Mark Pedron, Bill Conner, Kerry Girander. Mike McCalliester, Jon Lee, Dave Cowles, Duong Tuong, Kris Kennedy, a Steve Jones, and Tim Boettcher.
