Q 40 Winning Seasons Prevail A Moving up from assistant coach to head coach, Kevin Morgan and new assistant coach Larry Ried finished with a impressive 513 record. We lost our first two games but came back to win the last 4 out of 5 to finish third in league. stated coach Morgan. Outstanding players were quarter- back Dean Barber who provided as a team leader, and runningback Rich Cherry who was referred to by Mor' gan the best back he's ever had. The defensive standouts were defensive backs .loe Cottle, David Ray, Dave Ta- kacs and offensive-defensive lineman Martie Manfre whom the coaches have bigger expectations than his older brother Joey. Over the last three seasons the Soph. football team has been the schools most consistant sport. Head coach Don Cavarra has compiled a t overall record of 25 wins and 5 losses in these three years. This years 7-3 finish gave the Oly's a third place league finish. 'Even though we had a good team we had problems with my rules and regulations against the administraf tions, stated Cavarrra. One of the reasons for his consistant success is his policy for strict discipline among team members. When several players broke his policy it caused problems for Cavarra, his team and the administra- tion. But outside of this the soph's proved to have a good team. The ears ly part of the season was held together by the defense, but the offense came on to score l5'5 points in the last 5 games, said Cavarra. Team leaders were freee safety Wade Harris who led the team in several statistics and runningback Sean Velarde. corecard corecard Fr. wins 5 loss 3 Soph's wins 7 loss 3 Oly's TEAM PLAYED Opp. Oly's TEAM PLAYED Opp. 20 Overland 6 i3 O Regis 20 6 Smoky Hill 7 O Central 6 I9 Regis 6 CT l4 Mullen l3 23 Hinkley I3 7 Cherry Creek 27 23 Raingview l4 102 Fr.!Soph. 's ,gb 0 Best Season Ever The Gateway Tennis Team finished the i983 season with a record of 6-4. Ron Salazar, in his fourth year as head coach went from a Oll record in l98O to the best record in school history. The team started the season by get- ting five early victories, three of which were over such league powers as Littleton, Mullen and Heritage. The first defeat came by a 2-5 loss at the hands of the Overland Trailblazers. But two weeks later the Olys came back to win the first annual Aurora City Championships edging the Trail- blazers 53-50 in total points. The Olys placed all but one person in the finals of the tournament. The ever consis- tant doubles winning three out of four matches. The second half of the sea- son only provided problems for the Matt Mantey and fourth place by third singles Brian Wilson. Even though the team consisted of seven Seniors, coach Salazar has ex- pectations for next years team. Senior David Fields was at one singles and earned more singles victories than anyone ever at Gateway, Sr. Mike Zylla was at number two singles, Sr. Scott Heroux and Sean Linder at one dou- bles. Sophs. Andre Hutton and Scott Nukerkat two doubles, Sr, Jeff Britigan and the only Junior, Matt Mantey at three doubles and the M.V.P. combina- tion of Rick Richardson and Mike Naw- rocki. Soph's Brian Wilson, Andre Hut- ton and Scott Nykerk should combine to make the three singles positions strong, and Mantey to put strength at one doubles for next season. We surprised ourselves with some of our victories, Olys, winning one of the remaining four matches. One week later the team went into districts ranked fourth out of twelve teams. But district only pro- vided more problems loosing three out of their first five matches. Places were earned by the fourth doubles team of Rick Richardson and Mike Nawrocki, who placed third, fourth place by the third doubles team of Jeff Britigan and 104 Boy 's Tennis corecard wins 6 loss 4 Oly's TEAM PLAYED Opp. 5 Hinkley 2 4 Mullen 3 4 Littleton 3 5 Heritage 2 2 Overland 5 5 Smoky Hill 2 lst Aurora City championships O Cherry Creek 7 5 Central 2 2 Fairview 5 2 Regis 5 6th Districts s y sssr f K ,es me at . tii. lx .s :seas :s - . 4.
