'91- We A- og! 'Pl A New Formation Ccontinued from page 983 But the Oly's went to Boulder to play the Fairview Knights, who also had playoff hopes. This was one of the few games where the defense was con- trolled as well as the offense. Fairview and one of the states top quarter- backs, who was aided by good field position left by the offense, picked apart the defense to put 34 points on the board. The only excitement came on a 47 yard field goal attempt late in the fourth quarter by kicker Alan Storm. The most unusual occurance happened in Gateways l4-8 homecom- ing victory over the Central Trojans. The game proved to be as those earlier in the season with the defense saving the game until the fourth quarter when quarterback Jeff Girkin dove in from the one for a supposed victory. But due to the play of a fifth year Senior who was ineligible from high school activity, Gateway was forced to for- feit the game. Not yet knowing of the forfeit loss the Oly's were to play the Overland Trailblazers with still a chance to make the playoffs. ln the same fashion as last season, the Oly's held the lead until the fourth quarter when the Trailblazers scored a last minute touchdown to pull out the vic- tory. The next game faced the Smoky Hill Buffalos. The Smoky Hill offense confused the defense with several misdirection plays and the defense held the offense to a minimal amount of yardage. The offense that was pro- vided was by Darrell Perkins who rushed for a I34 yards and several pass completions between Girkin and Dane Lovato. The 32-6 clearly eliminated the Oly's from the playoffs. The final game and the last home game for the Seniors was against the Mullen Mustangs. The Mullen game was by far the best game of the season. Runningbacks Richard Grooms and Darrel Perkins both had their best days rushing for well over a lOO yards. The defense forced several turnovers out of one of the states top offenses and after the first half totally shut down the states top quarterback. The team finally put things together but it was five games too late. Even though the Oly's finished with a loosing record, Gateway placed sev- eral players on the all-league team. De- fensive players were: linebacker Ron Fano-honorable mention, lineman Tom Cullen, Bok Kinm, Robert Pratt and linebacker Joe Guttierez were second team. Offensive selections were Joey Manfre, kicker-Alan Storm, fuiiback Richard Grooms and the only Junior- Darrel Perkins, who was the most used runningback in the Centennial League. The only all league player for Gateway was strong safety Dane Lovato. Lovato was a standout not only on defense but on offense and special teams. Only re- turning kicks for a half season Lovato finished third in the league with one touchdown. These players were possi- ble ai! state players but because of the poor season they were given no recog- nition for their job well done. For next season Hilliar once again set his goal for making the state play- offs. Even though he only lettered sev- en juniors and had only 22 members on the Soph. team he hopes they blend into a good team. The younger kids should make a better adjustment to the offense than this years class, stated Hilliar. ln any case, Hilliar hopes to return Gateway to the playoffs once again. Athletics for
