'49 The Gateway Clympians finished the i983 season with a disappointing record of 4-6. The season marked the arrival of new head coach Dallas Hil liar. The Oly's were placed with a com- pletely different coaching staff from past seasons. Tony Davis replaced Fred Warren as defensive backfield coach and Chuck Mills replaced War- ren as defensive coordinator. Tony Rosso replaced Casey Coons as offen- sive line coach and the biggest of all- Hilliar for Iverson at the head position. We lacked the consistency that a good team has to maintain. Even though we improved through the year we arrived too late, replied Hilliar on the season. The one thing that hurt the team most of all was the change in two that won in second half with a Thunderbird pass- ing attack. The offense generated no offense at all and the few good plays they had were called back by penali- ties. The Thornton game was basically of the same outline. The defensive backfield once again had problems de- fending the pass and there was no prof duction by the offense. The end result was a I9-I4 non-league loss. The next two games the Oly's defeated the Heritage Eagles and the Littleton Lions. ln these two games the defense completely controlled the field of play and the team once again had hopes of philosophy in coaches from one year to the next. And the changes were ma- making the playoffs. Ccontinued on page lOlJ 'What we lacked in consistency. that a good team has to maintain. jor. Hilliar plays more of a power of- fense which is totaliy different from the predominate passing attack of the past seasons. The change on defense was much less and with the exception of a few games the defense finished with a outstanding year. With only five returning lettermen the defense fin- ished second in league in overail de- fense and held the Oly's in most of the games throughout the season. The Oly's started the season on a high note defeating the state runner- ups Regis Raiders 2744. The game was a defensive battle until the third quar- ter when runningback Richard Grooms broke for a 67 yard touchdown run. Then later in the third quarter Clifford Giddings returned a 47 yard punt to put the icing on the cake.
