As Sr. Joe Guttierez said, l feel the student prep. period is a waste if you don't have homework, and l would much rather pick up an assistantship get a credit for it. The cafeteria was also changed. There were seperate hot lunch and sandwich lines, and of course, the snack bar. One difference was that the snack bar was opened only during lunch, and closed at all other times during the day. lt was also opened 7th hour and provided candy, chips, and pop for those who were wait- ing for sports or play practice to begin. Lunch prices were also raised to a dollar, with a ten-day lunch ticket package avail- able for 59.50. Fifth hour was divided up, with a first and second lunch period mixed in. A student's lunch hour was de- termined by their fifth hour class. We were still allowed to leave the school grounds and head for one of the numer- ous fast food places such as McDonalds, Arbys, Taco Bell, and Taco Bueno. As we looked around the halls of Gate- way, we could see that they seemed a little empty, like they were missing some- thing. Yes-Rangeview had finally opened. We were now 500 students and I5 faculty members less. These people had gone to Rangeview, which opened in the fall of '83. Although the opening of the new school was supposed to cut down on Gateway's crowded situation, it seemed the same because we were off the split schedule, and everyone now came to school at the same time. These changes were hard, but that didn't stop us from having a great year. continued on page 9 . . . The Jr. class awaits the winner of the spirit stick at the last fall pep assembly. Ah. the sweet smell of summer. Flowers in bloom, chlorine from swimming pools, and of course. barbeques. Too bad it didn't last. But no matter how long our vacation was, it seemed all of our activi- ties were somehow connected with Gate- way High School. Seniors were busy get- ting their Senior pictures taken, cheer- leaders were busy winning awards at camps around the state, and of course. our teams were preparing for the upcom- ing season. Soon around the middle of August came registration, seeing old friends, meeting new ones. and compar- ing our fall schedules. Along with regis- tration came the time when we found out about the changes at Gateway. To begin with, we were taken off our split schedule and put onto a normal day . Classes now began at 7:28 and ran 55 minutes each. There was also a seven minute homeroom added to first hour where announcements were read, and re- port cards, federal census cards, and things of that nature were given out. We had a six period day. with all classes be- ing dismissed at 2:00. There was also a seventh hour. which accommodated the extra Curricular activities such as band and club meetings. Perhaps the biggest shock and change regarded the commons. No longer were we allowed to sit and catch up on the latest gossip, or have a Suzi-Q fix. lf we had a free hour we were assigned to a Student Preperation period. This study hall was held in the annex and was moni- tiored by a security guard. Students were allowed to leave the class to go to the library or take a test. Some students used the library excuse to go to 7-ll, or their favorite food places for a quick pick me up . continued on page 6 J .
