The Marching Band was organized as an all-volunteer co-curricular activity ln August of 1983. lt was open to any student from grades 7 through 12, and in a few cases has included highly talented 6th graders. ln additon to the fifty musicians, the band has a Front Line consisting of twenty Color Guard members and twelve Majorettes. Their new uniforms were designed by a committee of students, parents, and staff, and were worn for the first time at the televised Lilac Day Parade in May of 1985. The band has been directed by Robert Zale, assisted by Les Johnson fmar- chingj, and Cheryl Pentycofe fcolor guardj. The season starts with a Band Camp during one week in August. The band practices two or three evenings per week for about three hours. Performances for this year have included several home football games, two New York State Field Band Contests, and competition at the NYSFB Championship Show at the Dome in Syracuse. The band placed second in the Novice Division. The band has appeared on television at the Lilac Day Parade for the past three years, and has marched at many parades in Gates, Chili, and with the Fire Department at Spencerport. This year's student director is Crystal Hazard, a highly talented clarinetist who has been with the Marching Band since the very first practice. Most members are currently from the Middle School, but the program is being reorganized to try to get more senior high band members involved. The experience gained by starting this program has truly demonstrated strength in character, leadership, and commitment in many of our students. Those who were original members and are still with the group are the backbone of its strength and have earned the respect of all those involved. MARCHING BAND
