SENIORS ATTEND SEMINAR Leta Godsey and Andrea Adkins attended the Congressional Seminar in Washington, D.C. from January 24, 1982 through January 30, 1982. The girls have a high overall academic average. Of the three years students from Gate City have attended, this is the first year girls have participated. The Congressional Seminar offered a practical and personal knowledge of how American politics unfolds in Washington and Congress. A major part of the week was devoted to scheduled dialogue sessions with Senators and Congressmen, stressing a question and answer format of discussion. These meetings were held on Capitol Hill and were supplemented by attendance at House and Senate sessions and committee meetings. In order to better understand the relationship of Congress to the rest of the government, sessions were scheduled with high- ranking officials of various government departments and agencies, such as the White House staff, Pentagon officials and Supreme Court justices, all of whom helped to fashion the day-to-day workings of national government. The students were given a chance to put the knowledge and procedures of the Congress into practical application by participating in a Model Congress, which proved to be one of the most enjoyable aspects of the week. Each evening of the seminar, the participants were divided into committees, then drafted their own legislative ideas for submission to the Model Congress. An officer of the House of Representatives presided, utilizing modified procedures and rules of the House. The seminar brought an ambassador to meet with the students. These meetings provided a unique opportunity for added perpective into American’s role in the international community. Following each day’s activities, a short evening session was held by a visiting professor. This person, usually from the faculty of a nearby college or university, conducted what in effect was a ‘‘de-briefing’’ on the points and analysis of the wide-ranging discussions of the day. No Congressional Seminar would be complete without a good old fashioned tour of the nation’s Capitol. The students were given many opportunities for prearranged visits to well-known tourist attractions and monuments. Miss Betty Snodgrass and Miss Fostena Parkey, both are government teachers, helped make this opportunity possible and Leta and Andrea appreciate the effort they made in their behalf.

ee ee ee Be SFeeee2z2 999 99 4 DEDICATED TO THE CLASS OF °82” THE GOOD OL’ TIMES As our days go by, we come closer to the time that we must part, never again to return to these days, which are so precious in our hearts. The times we shared, were filled with laughter, joy, love, and an occasional tear. These were the feelings we had in our hearts, as we roamed the halls, that are so dear. Through the years, we've gained new friendships, and made new loves, but soon we shall see them each float away; softly and carelessly as a snow white dove. We will go through our lives with these memories packed away tenderly in our minds; but when our paths shall once cross again, another tear shall roll down our faces, as we reminisce the good ol’ times’’.
