The times we shared, were filled with laughter, joy, love, and an occasional tear. These were the feelings we had in our hearts, as we roamed the halls, that are so dear. Through the years, we've gained new friendships, and made new loves, but soon we shall see them each float away; softly and carelessly as a snow white dove. We will go through our lives with these memories packed away tenderly in our minds; but when our paths shall once cross again, another tear shall roll down our faces, as we reminisce the good ol’ times’’. By: Cathy ‘Birdie’ Stokes SENIORS ATTEND SEMINAR Leta Godsey and Andrea Adkins attended the Congressional Seminar in Washington, D.C. from January 24, 1982 through January 30, 1982. The girls have a high overall academic average. Of the three years students from Gate City have attended, this is the first year girls have participated. The Congressional Seminar offered a practical and personal knowledge of how American politics unfolds in Washington and Congress. A major part of the week was devoted to scheduled dialogue sessions with Senators and Congressmen, stressing a question and answer format of discussion. These meetings were held on Capitol Hill and were supplemented by attendance at House and Senate sessions and committee meetings. In order to better understand the relationship of Congress to the rest of the government, sessions were scheduled with high- ranking officials of various government departments and agencies, such as the White House staff, Pentagon officials and Supreme Court justices, all of whom helped to fashion the day-to-day workings of national government. The students were given a chance to put the knowledge and procedures of the Congress into practical application by participating in a Model Congress, which proved to be one of the most enjoyable aspects of the week. Each evening of the seminar, the participants were divided into committees, then drafted their own legislative ideas for submission to the Model Congress. An officer of the House of Representatives presided, utilizing modified procedures and rules of the House. The seminar brought an ambassador to meet with the students. These meetings provided a unique opportunity for added perpective into American’s role in the international community. Following each day’s activities, a short evening session was held by a visiting professor. This person, usually from the faculty of a nearby college or university, conducted what in effect was a ‘‘de-briefing’’ on the points and analysis of the wide-ranging discussions of the day. No Congressional Seminar would be complete without a good old fashioned tour of the nation’s Capitol. The students were given many opportunities for prearranged visits to well-known tourist attractions and monuments. Miss Betty Snodgrass and Miss Fostena Parkey, both are government teachers, helped make this opportunity possible and Leta and Andrea appreciate the effort they made in their behalf. 30 On Friday evening, De- cember 18, 1981, the Class of 1982 celebrated Christmas at their Senior Christmas Party. The school cafeteria was deco- rated in a red and gold color scheme with the traditional Christmas tree. To Kim: I wish to express my deep appreciation and gratitude for an outstanding job as the yearbook editor. You have devoted much time and effort to make this book a success. Now as the final pages of the 1982 book are put to bed, you can lean back, relax, and enjoy the laurels you so richly deserve. Nancy K. Ward ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS A very special thanks to the following people, without whom this book would have been just an idea in the staff's minds: Nancy Ward, for prodding us on to meet the deadlines. Ashley Addington, for working on Senior pictures. Lisa Williams and Danita Culbertson, for their work on Junior pictures. Pam Penley, our business manager, who sold over half of the ads and took care of all the money. Betty Wright, who sold the most yearbooks — 97. Dwain Arnold and Rosemarie Carter, for their art contributions. Regina Stallard and Jeannie Robinette, for working on clubs. Cathy Stokes, for her work with the faculty section. Wrenda Kendrick, for working on Freshman and Sophomore sections. Jean Blackburn, for delivering proofs to me in the icy cold of winter. Mike and Sherry Quillen, for opening their beautiful home to us for Senior Superlative Pictures. Kevin Peters, for doing anything and everything. Family and Friends, for time and patience. Thanks, one and all — we couldn’t have done it without you! 175 MV AS) The 1982 Blue Devil has been completed and | want to take this time to say a big THANK YOU to the annual staff for becoming involved and giving of themselves.
