Each of the four students has an overall academic average of 95 or above. The Congressional Seminar offered a practical and personal knowledge of how American politics unfolds in Washington and Congress. A major part of each week was devoted to scheduled dialogue sessions with Senators and Congressmen, stressing a question and answer format of discussion. These meetings were held on Capital Hill and were supplemented by attendance at House and Senate sessions and committee meetings. For the 1980 seminar session, special attention was focused on the important issues of the Presidential elections. In order to better understand the relationship of Congress to the rest of the government, sessions were scheduled with high-ranking officials of various government departments and agencies, such as the White House staff, Pentagon officials and Supreme Court justices, all of whom helped to fashion the day-to-day workings of national government. The students were given a chance to put the knowledge and procedures of the Congress into practical application by participating in a Model Congress. Each evening of the seminar, the participants were divided into committees, then draft their own legislative ideas for submission to the Model Congress. An officer of the House of Representatives presided, utilizing modified procedures and rules of the House. The seminar brought an ambassador to meet with the students. These meetings provided a unique opportunity for added perspective into Americans’ role in the international community. Following each day’s seminar activities, a short evening session was held by a visiting professor. This person, usually from the faculty of a nearby college or university, conducted what in effect was a “de-briefing” on the points and analysis of the wide-ranging discussions of the day. No Congressional Seminar would be complete without a good old-fashioned tour of the nation’s Capitol. The students were given many opportunities for prearranged visits to well-known tourist attractions and monuments. Our own Miss Betty Snodgrass, who teaches government at our school, was responsible for this “‘once-in-a-life-time” opportunity and our four students deeply appreciate the effort she made in their behalf. 150 THESE PEOPLE STOPPED TO HELP US. This, the 1980 issue of the Blue Devil marks the end of an important phase of our lives. The scholastic challenges as well as our extracurricular activities has enabled us to become better students and to be prepared for a more successful future. Socially our interests were broadened and the many opportunities we encountered have enriched our lives. Perhaps in the future when you look at this book, it will bring back pleasant memories and thus serve as a connecting link to the past, embodied with pleasure and fond memories. To you the students and faculty of 1980, we, the Blue Devil Staff, offer this yearbook as a record of another year at Gate City High School.
