I I I am delighted and challenged by this opportunity to thank the Annual Staff for a task well done. The work of the Staff represents in a small way the pattern of the entire program at Gate City High School. They have grown, produced, and learned because they were permitted to set their own goals and because they have had a wide range of freedom of choice in the completion of the finished product. It is a great feeling to act as a consultant and a resource to a group of young people who want to grow, to emerge, and to be trusted. He serves best who is direct, real, open, spontaneous, permissive, emotional and per- sonal. Each member of the staff has performed to such a degree that group strength has been very evident. The grow- ing, developing adolescent must be given a gradual introduction to freedom and responsibility. Any abrupt con- frontation with these two areas of behavior will produce only confusion. Though there are times when students may embarrass faculty and administration with decisions, it is the price we must pay for a strong democracy.
