JAMES M.OLINGER, JR. PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE Wendell Johnson has said that “The future from which we can never escape swiftly becomes the past which we can never recapture.” As I look forward today, October 10, 1966, I see a yearbook which describes our school not only for 1966 — 1967 but also one which points to a more promising future. It is with gratitude and pride that we express to the Annual Staff our sincere thanks for a task well performed. The Staff portrays the many changes that are here and now, such as curriculum change, change in the nature of teacher presen- tation, new library materials and services, new physical facilities for health and physical education, as well as improved building and grounds. Much talk, some hard facts, and a great deal of money have provided these changes. Major efforts have been made by the Board of Education to improve the quality of education in Scott County. Major contributions have been made and are being made to upgrade education by all the people of our county. The faculty and stu- dents of Gate City High School would like to say “thanks” to those who have helped, and we sincerely hope that you may continually work with us. 17

It has been said that the twin purposes of education are information and in- spiration. Mrs. Edna Quillin embodies these two aims as she goes about her daily work in the library of Gate City High School. Mrs. Quillin has many en- dearing qualities. Her goodness, her kindness, her patience, her love for students contribute much to the education of each student. People are honored, not for what they receive, but for what they give. Mrs. Quillin has given much. A life that counts is one that leaves the world better. Among the riches of life are friendships with good books, good souls, and great causes. Mrs. Quillin has introduced us to these. Education has many subjects, but one object: a wholesome, effective life. We are grateful to Mrs. Quillin for setting such a splendid example. It is with love and gratitude that we, the staff of the 1967 Blue Devil, dedicate our book to Mrs. Quillin. 16
