PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE The reader who cares for our youth’s heritage of freedom and for the unl imited re- sponsibilities of their future will find in this volume a personal message. The blend- ing of legends, experiences and ideas, as depicted herein, will serve in creating for you the true image of Gate City High School, as the faculty and student body go about their daily tasks. This volume tells a mighty story to both the faculty and students who live here. To others, it allows only fragments of a story of the way of life here. In these pages we hope to say in some small measure what we, all of this school, believe; that we have in our school a way of life that is unique and treasured, and of which we are in- finitely and justly proud. Schools are, in the final analysis, the people who compose them — the administration, the teachers and the students. The true glory of a school — in fact, of a nation — is an intelligent, honest, industrious, loyal and upright people. A school’s purpose, as a part of our civilization, is the molding of individual character. The school itself is the outgrowth of the aggregate individual characters, the students themselves. The school is the students and the students are the result of their thoughts. Thus, the school is the thinking of the students. I believe that the very crown of glory of our people depends upon our schools : where- in knowledge is free and liberal, where words taught come from the depths of truth, and where the mind is free and without fear; wherein the student is taught to think without confusion, to regard the courage of his convictions as a virtue, to act solely from honest motives, and to be true to his highest convictions; wherein: “Not gold, but only men can make A people great and strong, Men who for truth and honor’s sake, Stand fast and suffer long. They build a nation’s pillars deep And lift them to the sky.” James M. Olinger, Jr., Principal

WE PAY TRIBUTE So that we might give recognition to someone who has been outstanding, we have chosen to dedicate our yearbook to a fine lady, a faithful friend, and a good teacher, Mrs. Mabel Wing. Through Mrs. Wing’s help, many minds have been awak- ened to learning. Having received a B.A. degree at Berea College in Kentucky, she has put her vast knowledge to work in the classrooms of Shoemaker High School and is presently teaching World Geography here at Gate City High School. She is a sponsor of the Library Club and of the F.T.A. Her outstanding career as a teacher is an in- spiration not only to all future teachers, but also to every- one who knows her. Because Mrs. Wing has served us so well, it is with pride that we pay tribute to her in the 1966 Blue Devil. Mrs. Mabel Wing
