The blend- ing of legends, experiences and ideas, as depicted herein, will serve in creating for you the true image of Gate City High School, as the faculty and student body go about their daily tasks. This volume tells a mighty story to both the faculty and students who live here. To others, it allows only fragments of a story of the way of life here. In these pages we hope to say in some small measure what we, all of this school, believe; that we have in our school a way of life that is unique and treasured, and of which we are in- finitely and justly proud. Schools are, in the final analysis, the people who compose them — the administration, the teachers and the students. The true glory of a school — in fact, of a nation — is an intelligent, honest, industrious, loyal and upright people. A school’s purpose, as a part of our civilization, is the molding of individual character. The school itself is the outgrowth of the aggregate individual characters, the students themselves. The school is the students and the students are the result of their thoughts. Thus, the school is the thinking of the students. I believe that the very crown of glory of our people depends upon our schools : where- in knowledge is free and liberal, where words taught come from the depths of truth, and where the mind is free and without fear; wherein the student is taught to think without confusion, to regard the courage of his convictions as a virtue, to act solely from honest motives, and to be true to his highest convictions; wherein: “Not gold, but only men can make A people great and strong, Men who for truth and honor’s sake, Stand fast and suffer long. They build a nation’s pillars deep And lift them to the sky.” James M. Olinger, Jr., Principal SEATED, left to right: Mr. Jack Renick, Mr. G. W. Francisco, Mr. E. M. Under the capable leadership of the Scott County School Board members, Gate City High, as well as all other schools in the county, is able to function properly. We are indebted to them for undertaking the task of making our schools the best possible. Scott County School Board 17 Superintendent: Jack Renick WE PAY TRIBUTE So that we might give recognition to someone who has been outstanding, we have chosen to dedicate our yearbook to a fine lady, a faithful friend, and a good teacher, Mrs. Mabel Wing. Through Mrs. Wing’s help, many minds have been awak- ened to learning. Having received a B.A. degree at Berea College in Kentucky, she has put her vast knowledge to work in the classrooms of Shoemaker High School and is presently teaching World Geography here at Gate City High School. She is a sponsor of the Library Club and of the F.T.A. Her outstanding career as a teacher is an in- spiration not only to all future teachers, but also to every- one who knows her. Because Mrs. Wing has served us so well, it is with pride that we pay tribute to her in the 1966 Blue Devil. Mrs. Mabel Wing Mrs. C. S. This book represents many hours of planning and months of preparation on behalf of the staff. It has been hard work, but it has been a pleasure to serve Gate City High School in this capacity. We would like to express our deepest appreciation to those people who have given their time, cooperation, and financial assistance in making this yearbook a reality. Our heartfelt thanks go out to each of these people: Mrs. Frances Ann Culbertson, our advisor, who carried us through frequent trials and tribulations; Mr. James Olinger, our principal, from whom we received wholehearted support; Mr. Ron Wempe, our company advisor, for his invaluable help in planning our annual: Mr. Graham and his staff for their expert photography; Mrs. Marie Miller, our free-lance pho- tographer; our faculty for their patience and cooperation; the student body for their support and participation; and last, but not least, we wish to thank our advertisers without whose financial support this book would have not been pos- sible. To keep alive the experiences of the happy days when we were “isolated from the cares of the world” is the Blue Devil’s sole excuse for being. Like a pleasant mirage, memories of Gate City High may become dim or even fade away before our eyes, but the Blue Devil is destined to re- cord our achievements “forever and a day.” ■ — Editor Our mascot, Christopher 66 Mr. and Miss Gate City High School DANA HERRON JIMMY WOLFE Mr. and Miss . They presented Christmas and Spring Concerts and sponsored a Shindig in addition to singing for many school and church programs. Funds raised by Choral projects were used to purchase new music and equipment. Other expenses included trans- portation costs throughout the year. Several of the more talented Choral members were chosen to be a part of the All State Chorus. During the spring the entire club attended District Festival. The Choral Association has had a very pleasant and success- ful year and should have many more in the future. 79 SEATED, left to right: Sharon H. Starnes, William Bradshaw, Sue F. Keith, Phyllis S. BLUE DEVIL STAFF The primary aim of the 1966 Blue Devil Staff was to make this year’s year- book the best possible. However, we soon discovered that this goal would not easily be reached. We finally settled down to the business at hand and soon began all the necessary work to make a good yearbook. The 1966 Blue Devil has many features. This includes the use of more color and an exceptional new cover. We, the Blue Devil Staff, hope you will enjoy your new yearbook and will, in the future years, turn many times to these pages and to the days you should cherish always. EDITOR: Gary Miller A school paper, if handled properly, can be something that the students, faculty, and especially the members of the paper staff, can be proud of for the rest of their lives. A good school paper, for example, should not have the names of the same students in it issue after issue ; likewise, the articles should be on a wide variety of subjects and should be of interest to the majority of the students. This past year the Devil Dateline has more than met the above requirements. The highly versatile staff has worked exceptionally well, and has produced one of the best, if not the best, school papers ever produced at G.C.H.S. All members of the Devil Dateline Staff deserve special congratulations for a job well done. Extra special thanks go to our sponsors and our editors who have put their all into the production of the Devil Dateline. EDITOR: Phyllis S. Gibson DEVIL DATELINE STAFF BRUSH AND PALETTE “Brush and Palette,” the Gate City High School Art Club, was organized as an extension for the development of the potential artist and art enthusiast. The ultimate aim of “Brush and Palette” is to help the individual in his preparation to solve problems, to contrib- ute in a personal way to life about him, to understand him- self and others better, and to appreciate the place of art as a universal language. It is the aim of the Footlighters to instill in its members a sense of individual worth as citizens, not only of today but also of tomorrow. This club was organized in the spring of 1961. Every year the club has conducted a turkey raffle at Thanksgiving for the purpose of raising funds. Speech Club members have traveled to the Barter Theatre in Abingdon, Virginia, to attend the plays held there. This year’s Speech Club plans to produce some one-act plays which will be shown to the student body. Also there will be a crowning social function in the annual party, the decorations of which are built around the Greek masks of comedy and tragedy. Club sponsor is Miss Hazel Culbertson. It provides an excellent opportunity for the students to order books of high quality at low prices. The books are of various kinds — ranging from drama, to cartoons, to love stories, that are enlightening in one’s field of study. The Campus Book Club has no dues, and no offi- cers other than student secretaries who compile book orders ; but it does provide a magnificent opportunity for those who like to read. Established, in 1959, our chapter of the National Honor Society, the Opeprudentia Chapter, has rendered many services. Though it is a nationwide organization, our Society centers mainly around activities within the school. Cam- paigns for honesty and fairness are promoted by this group. Every effort is made to provide opportunity for group co-operation in social, educational, and civic projects. F.F.A. The Gate City Chapter of the Future Farmers of America has 87 active members, who take part in all facets of the program. The F.F.A. is an intra-curricular activity having its origin and root in a definite part of the school curricu- lum. Among other things, members leam through active participation how to conduct and take part in a public meeting; to speak in public; and to buy and sell cooper- atively; to solve their own problems, to finance themselves; and to assume civic responsibility. This year the club has a membership of twelve. The organization has a two-fold purpose : 1. To identify capable candidates for teaching, and to motivate them to choose appropriate fields of prepa- ration. 2. To offer potential teachers experiences in actual teaching situations, and to develop leadership and co-operation through work in various group proj- ects. The main objective of the club is to create a greater inter- est in the study of mathematics as a science. Since the future of our nuclear science, automation, quali- ty control, industrial and fundamental research are de- pendent upon mathematics, we of the Math Club are striving to improve our math abilities. The Devils combined a steamrolling offense with a crushing defense in compiling their 10 — 0 — 0 record and in winning their third Lonesome Pine Championship in four years. Gate City placed six players, Jimmy Wolfe, Woody Newman, John Robinette, Jeff Baker, Wayne McMeans, and Fred Pippin, on the All-District first team. Six more Devils received honorable mention. Jimmy Wolfe, in addition to being named the Lonesome Pine’s most valuable lineman, was picked as an end on the All-State team. Jeff Baker, most valuable back in the Lonesome Pine, received honorable mention on the All-State team. Congratulations are in order for the fine coaching staff whose leadership and inspira- tion was a major factor in this year’s successful season. Coach Harry Fry was named coach of the year in the Lonesome Pine District and in Southwest Virginia. One of the major highlights of the season was a trip by the whole team to Knox- ville, Tennessee, to see the University of Tennessee Baby Vols play the Alabama Fresh- men team. Coach Vicars had eight returning lettermen, headed by Darwin Pippin, Fred Pippin, Cliff Potts, and John Robinette, on which to build this year’s team. Boys who came up from last year’s J.V. team contributed heavily to the success of the team. Combining talent, determination, and desire, this Devil team proved to be one of the very best in the school’s history. The pressure was on but John came through. Oops! Somebody get that rebound! Track With the completion of the new Athletic Stadium and its track and field facilities, Gate City will, for the first time, host track meets. This symbolizes the ever-increas- ing importance of track in Gate City’s athletic program, and students will be able to cheer the Devil Thinclads to victory on their own track. Gate City’s track team had an outstanding season last year, going undefeated in the regular season and winning the Lonesome Pine District Championship Meet. The Devil Thinclads then participated in the Group 1-B State Track Meet at Lex- ington, Virginia. Coach Mainous has several returning lettermen from last year’s champions to fill out the ranks thinned by graduation. If he can find help in one or two events, an- other championship seems imminent in 1966. ] Powell Valley — Appalachia — Wise — Gate City Powell Valley — Coeburn — Gate City District Meet at Powell Valley State Meet at Lexington Coach C. The Company’s continuing growth is due, in no small measure, to the loyal and dedicated efforts of these men and women. George Eastman once said “What we do during our working hours determines what we have; what we do in our leisure hours determines what we are.” These 9,000 Eastman people and their families, joining with their neighbors in the civic, religious, governmental and recreational activities of their communities have made a better place in which to live. Doing their share in their leisure hours has, indeed, determined what they are— and helped make their communities what they are. Tennessee Eastman The Company is proud of the contribution Eastman people have made to the progress of their communities. By growing and prospering, Eastman makes a contribution to the economy of the area. Through wages, salaries and benefits paid, materials purchased, taxes, and trans- portation costs paid in Kingsport, Eastman’s contribution to the area’s economy has grown steadily through the years. For the year 1964, this contribution exceeded $116,000,000.
