WHO BARBARA CHANCE Homemaking An eager and capable student, Barbara Chance, is exceptionally in- terested in all phases of homemalcing. Her neatness, enthusiasm and desire to acquire correct techniques in such areas as clothing, foods, home management, relationships, crafts, and child care have been characteristics of her work during the four years of homemaking classes. Barbara has also completed two summer experiences and has been an active member of the Future Homemakers of America or- ganization, having served as local treasurer and president and also mi F. H. A. Area IX president. QQ CHARLES PENNINGTON Vocational Agriculture Charles' outstanding work in Vocational Agriculture has been proved in leadership of the F. F. A., a.nd his interest in producing and mar- keting livestock and poultry. After serving a year as junior president he was elected president of the chapter and chosen to represent his school at the F. F. A. National Convention held in Kansas City, Mis- souri. He has participated in leadership contest work for two years at Commerce, and went to A. S M. College in poultry judging in the spring of 1953. DARWIN WALKER p s' 1 Driver Education Darwin Walker entered the safety course witli an open mind and a good attitude, and he showed an increasing interest in all class pro- jects until his work began to outshine his fellow students. ln December he was chosen along with two other students to represent Gaston at the Lufkin District Workshop on Traffic problems. He was W serious in his participation at the workshop and returned to make an excellent report to the class. He had patience and understanding with the students assigned to him to instruct in driving. He also chose as a term project to build a re- action timing machine because he felt such a demonstration could be beneficial to other drivers taking the course. DONALD POOL are English Eagerness to broaden his scope of knowledge, together with a desire for self-improvement, has helped Donald to become a superior Eng- lish student. Donald's well-organized research papers and his clever short essays give evidence of his writing ability. The demand for his appearance as a panel discussion member and as a master of cere- monies offers proof of his excellence as a speaker. In all of his ac- tivities, whether in English class or elsewhere, Donald maintains his indi id al' ' v u ism and at the same time is an unselfish contributor to his group. K It DOROTHY BELL Girl's Physical Education Dorothy has become an outstanding student in physical edu- cation because of her co-operation and respect for her te am- mates, her ability as an all-round athlete, her optimistic att1 tude , and her constant perseverance for improving her skills. JOHNNY NICOL Social Science Social Science is difficult f th or e ordinary student because he fails to get the overall picture of history from start to the present, b t lm ' u jo ny Nicol has that rare capacity to see how the past relates to present events. His understanding and his co t 'b ' n ri utions of current events as they relate to the past are what makes him the choice of the Social Science department as the outstanding student. johnny also found research a challenge to his curiosity and th . us he proved himself above average in this field. Although johnny enters into the class discussion readily, his long suit is in reading both in and out of class. Thus he deserves to re- ceive the highest award in this department.
