THE ' Q GASTON GUSHER K AQ..2f:w!L-,XML ,O744fV FCREWGRD Your class ring has a glorious heritage, a heritage which dates back to an early history., The GUSI-IER STAFF of '54 wishes to portray through this ring the history which has taken place in 1953 - '54 on Gaston Hill. I Your ring is a mark of distinction and is to you an everlastingly beautiful momento of your high school years. In future years you will wear it proudly, recalling many, many pleasant memories, some of which occurred during this particular school term. These accumulated memories of friends, fellow classmates, and teachers will never be forgotten, but live on. Yes, live on as your Senior Class Ring will live on and on as long as there is a Gaston! Let us first look at the G which stands for Gaston, Through this G is seen thc Administration, for they are the ones Who ac- tually are responsible for the wonderful school which we have today.. Since they, the board of education, the super- intendent, and the principals, all work together for the bet- terment of the school in gen- eral, it is only natural and correct that they be symbolic of the G and Gaston. .-Mix an f K ' Lhi' ? 15 HB' Members of the board prepare for their regular monthly meeting. WHO'S WHG When examining a class ring, have you ever possibly thought of dividing it in half? On one side of the ring is 19 and on the other is 54. From 19 to the center are the years spent in elementary and junior high, From the center to 54 are the years spent in high school. However, it is the year 1954 that the staff especially wishes to stress in this yearbook. Many important things have occurred during our high school years. Some events occur every year, but still are looked forward to. One of these is the announcement of the WHO'S WHO of Gaston. Thus, to cli- max each year students are chosen by the faculty to repre- sent Mr. and Miss Gastonite and each department in high school.. On the following pages this year's WHO'S WHO stu- dents are pictured, 1 MR. GASTONITE DGNALD POOL MIISS GASTONITE BARBARA CHANCE WHO' TOM PICKERING Boy's Physical Education Tom Pickering 's co-operation and quiet manner plus his interest and desire to win has won for him the highest honors in the physical edu- cation department. He has been an outstanding student in the field of athletics since he entered high school. Tom has participated in all sports at Gaston. He is an outstanding basketball and baseball player and was chosen as an all-district end in football. Along with athlet- ics he has also excelled in his academic work. His keen interest in sports will, no doubt, lead to many hours of en- joyment for Torn after graduation from Gaston. RUBY ANN HAYS Publications Ruby Ann held the two highest positions on the Gaston publications this year. She was Editor of the DEVlL'S DELIGHT and Co-Editor of the GASTON GUSHER. To attain these staff posts she began in lesser jobs three years ago and worked her way to the top. She has put in many extra hours on both staffs helping in all the little jobs that are necessary for a publication to succeed. Last year Ruby placed fourth in the lnterscholastic League Meet at Kilgore and also represented Gaston at the Texas High School Press Association. This year she represented the publications at T.H.S.P.A. and the Steck yearbook clinic at Austin. The past two years Ruby has written a weekly column called Gaston High School Round-up which appeared in the Henderson Daily News and the Longview Daily News. This job increased her much needed un:-....., ,,.. ,im experience. All this training has made Rubes begin to think of a journalistic career and thus the fourth estate has received a worthy member. ' , f I , , ' , ff l JOAN BARKER Dramatics 1 Joan Barker, in being chosen Who's Who in Senior Dramatics, has dis- X played beside her talents, a willingness of co-operation, a keen sensei of responsibility, and a spirit of leadership in all dramatic activities.l l '- WHO BARBARA CHANCE Homemaking An eager and capable student, Barbara Chance, is exceptionally in- terested in all phases of homemalcing. Her neatness, enthusiasm and desire to acquire correct techniques in such areas as clothing, foods, home management, relationships, crafts, and child care have been characteristics of her work during the four years of homemaking classes. Barbara has also completed two summer experiences and has been an active member of the Future Homemakers of America or- ganization, having served as local treasurer and president and also mi F. H. A. Area IX president. QQ CHARLES PENNINGTON Vocational Agriculture Charles' outstanding work in Vocational Agriculture has been proved in leadership of the F. F. A., a.nd his interest in producing and mar- keting livestock and poultry. After serving a year as junior president he was elected president of the chapter and chosen to represent his school at the F. F. A. National Convention held in Kansas City, Mis- souri. He has participated in leadership contest work for two years at Commerce, and went to A. S M. College in poultry judging in the spring of 1953. DARWIN WALKER p s' 1 Driver Education Darwin Walker entered the safety course witli an open mind and a good attitude, and he showed an increasing interest in all class pro- jects until his work began to outshine his fellow students. ln December he was chosen along with two other students to represent Gaston at the Lufkin District Workshop on Traffic problems. He was W serious in his participation at the workshop and returned to make an excellent report to the class. He had patience and understanding with the students assigned to him to instruct in driving. He also chose as a term project to build a re- action timing machine because he felt such a demonstration could be beneficial to other drivers taking the course. This is why Darwin Walker is the Who's Who in Driver Education. ' wrt llt UND I UN ECHON5 CTT ,nm Jn, t ' K ' ' I' V fu SMITH CHEVROLET C0 HENDERSON, TEXAS 5- LM- --..---.Q unix M GEORGE MONTGOMERY Choral g ery, an outstanding senior with a pleasin George Mont om g personal- ity, has shown great interest as a member of the High School Choral Club. George's interests are wide and varied, and he names hymns and Ne ro ' ' ' ' g spirituals as his favorite types of music. BARBARA HARDY Business Barbara is a proficient business student. Her sincere attitude al t ' ' I er personality, and desire to emulate previous re ds cor will make it possible for her to attain worthy heights in the busi- ness field. She is a capable neat bookk , eeper, and takes legi- ble shorthand which she transcribes rapidly in an acceptable form. Barbara entered busi ' ness training with the determina- tion to be skillful, and her aptitude and persistence are re- warded by the honor she now holds as the representative stu- dent of business education. FLOYD COOPER Math Floyd has made a place for himself, in the field of math eu- rnatics by his straight thinking and his persistent work in fol- 1 . owing each problem to a successful conclusion. v-4 Md By taldng four years of high school mathematics, Floyd has shown that he realizes the importance of mathematics i thi n s scientific ages thereby, he deserves a place in Who's Who. DONALD POOL are English Eagerness to broaden his scope of knowledge, together with a desire for self-improvement, has helped Donald to become a superior Eng- lish student. Donald's well-organized research papers and his clever short essays give evidence of his writing ability. The demand for his appearance as a panel discussion member and as a master of cere- monies offers proof of his excellence as a speaker. In all of his ac- tivities, whether in English class or elsewhere, Donald maintains his indi id al' ' v u ism and at the same time is an unselfish contributor to his group. K It DOROTHY BELL Girl's Physical Education Dorothy has become an outstanding student in physical edu- cation because of her co-operation and respect for her te am- mates, her ability as an all-round athlete, her optimistic att1 tude , and her constant perseverance for improving her skills. JOHNNY NICOL Social Science Social Science is difficult f th or e ordinary student because he fails to get the overall picture of history from start to the present, b t lm ' u jo ny Nicol has that rare capacity to see how the past relates to present events. His understanding and his co t 'b ' n ri utions of current events as they relate to the past are what makes him the choice of the Social Science department as the outstanding student. johnny also found research a challenge to his curiosity and th . us he proved himself above average in this field. Although johnny enters into the class discussion readily, his long suit is in reading both in and out of class. Thus he deserves to re- ceive the highest award in this department. The Physical Education Department is proud to be t s ow upon Dorothy the title of Who's Who in Physical Education. 515 'F TOMMY MARSHALL Band Tommy hasbeenan outstandin d g an dependable band student for quite a number of years. Although he is only a junior, he is a leader in his section and on the brasses. If Tommy continues his high stand- ards and keeps progressing as he has in the past, he will be a fine all around musician ' th 1n e near future. LEON WILLIAMS Science Leon Williams' understanding of science has made him an outstanding student in all science courses offered in high school. Leon's intense desire to learn coupled with an ex- cellent attitude in his study of general science, biology, chemistry, and physics is responsible for his success in this field. His ability to follow instructions and willingness in co-operation with others have proved invaluable in setting up and carrying out experiments. Leon's interest and willingness to learn i.n the field of s ' cience offer him a bright future in this field of endeavor. TROY LINCECUM Shop an his desire to make his work the best has, with- out a doubt, proved him worthy of the Who's Who award in Industrial Arts. His unusual ability in Mechanical Drawing, as well as use of all the mechanism in the shop deserves praise . Troy has constructed many worthwhile projects in shop, which in addition to making his home more beautiful will also assist him in making home repairs in the future, Troy's persistence d HIGH SCHGGL To each and every Senior his class ring is a highly cherished possession. To each it gives satisfaction of at long last be- coming a Senior. It is a sym- bol of an education that has b e e n obtained through twelve long years of hard studying, of memories of yesteryear and of those to come, of honors which have been bestowed upon him and of pride in himself and his school, and then of graduation and that happy yet sad feeling that comes. Our class ring is something sa- cred and has been to ev e ry Gastonite who has worn it. May this feeling remain throughout the ye ars t o come and may each look fo rw a r d with pride and happy antici- pation to his c l a s s ring an d Senior year. 1 f ns Troy Lincecum Barbara Hardy M CD?- v-IU: P14 'l3 'iZl11C1nI117U UF17U i J X N823 X -P .Z H7 ff, , af 35' . ,fa -J ' Jw The Senior Class officers go over graduation material with their sponsor Mrs. Onie I. For years Gaston has had as its mascot the Red Devil. The Red Devil spirit has be- c om e an outstanding charac- teristic of the students at Gas- ton. Naturally when one thinks of the Red Devil, sports auto- matically come into focus. So it is through these devil heads that all sports played on the hill will be seen as they have taken place in '54. Had you ever thought before that these devil heads on your class ring were symbolic of the spirit that prevails not only in sports but in the whole school?
