Tl l UHBIOND lOl INSON Band Tlnirniond johnson has played first chair bass horn in the lted Devil Baud for four years. His mastery of the difficult instrument is indicated by his winning four medals denoting the highest possible honors in solo contests. Thurmond was a member of the All-State Band this year and a member of the All-Region al Band the past two years. having earned first chair in the latter organization. Thurmond's activities have not been confined to playing the liornq he was. for three years. an able officer of the band, he performed many tasks such as loading instruments for trips and acting as uniform custodian. A spirit of helpful- ness has prevailed throughout Thurmond's association with the band. Because Tliurmond's first love is music, he plans tn enroll in college nest year to prepare for a musical career. sv JIMMY SUCCS English jimmy is the only Caslon sturlent who has twice reeeivecl the English award. His versatility accounts, in part, for his excellence in all fields of lCnglish-writing. speaking, and reading. jimmy's special style of writing, enhanced by his extensive vocabulary. is familiar to all Castonites because he has put his talent to practical use in editorials for the IJliYIl.'S Dl'CI.lCll'l', in sports stories 'lor the local newspapers, in copy for the CUSIIER. and in business letters for several organiza- tions. Of his numerous writings. however, his stimulating essays are the most commendable. As a speaker jimmy is likewise well-known. Especially noteworthy were the talks which he made before the vast audiences at T.H.S.P.A. conventions. jimmy continues to insist that good reading is the foundation for good thinking. This year he became so deeply interested in Shakespeare that he read the complete works of the great hard and used his dramas as the hasis for a long research paper. Such a background of distinction foretells for Iimrny success- ful years of college work and a brilliant future as well. J gcc W -vfs K E RUTH FHICITNIAN Home Economies ltuth's interest, skills, and enthusiasm for the various areas of work in homemaking have resulted in the selec- tion of her as the outstanding student in the department for this year, ln arldition to her scholastic abilities Ruth is also the possessor of a most pleasing personality and an attractive personal appearance. She has been a loyal member of the Gaston Chapter of Future Home- makers of America for both of her high school years.

Phil has taken part in the lour major sports that Gaston offers to the boys: football, basketball. traek, and base- ball. llc is a three-year lctterman in these sports, l.ast year Phil placed seeond in the ltegional low hurdles to qualify for the State Nlcct in Austin. He was a lnembcr of the Regional Championship Baslsetball learn this year and the Third Place State team last year. On the gridiron this past fall he hcld the Texas Class A record for individual scoring with a total of l-18 points. This spring l'hil entered the Kilgore lloxing 'l'ourn1nnent alld won the lleavysveight title.
