It gives you the con- fidence that you need. You say that it will work out after all. You want to be one with the school . . . the students ... the activities. You get involved. You have lived in a large city all your life and now moving to a small town. Everything is small in comparison — the college, pop- ulation, classes. It is a totally dif- ferent environment and you feel that everyone belongs except you. You are an outsider, you don’t feel optimistic about the future here, hundreds of people around you yet you're alone. Then you make friends A smile in the hall from a familiar face from one of your classes Asking questions of the person sitting beside you Borrowing notes from the girl ahead of you You’re not an outsider anymore — now you belong. Everyone is friendly Seeing familiar faces in the stu- dent lounge and being asked to join them Having them save you a seat in the cafeteria This is new to them also. You’re learning together— Sitting through a whole lecture class and leaving feeling
