In Memory of: Mrs. Rebecca Miller Wells Carpenter People build bridges in order to escape from the islands created by their own sense of aloneness. These bridges are constructed in the dark of our own minds amid the isolation of our loneliness. Mrs. Carpenter, Director of Gaston College’s Learning Resources Center since its beginning, helped many of us to create our own beginnings by providing the light and constant caring so NEEDED to give us the courage to carry on. Any person who was so fortunate as to have known Mrs. Carpenter will attest to the fact that every book, film strip, magazine, and piece of equipment in the center was thought by her to be not her personal possession but rather on loan to her only until she could talk us into taking it into our own possession. By “owning” nothing, she had (and gave) all. 26

We dedicate: Mrs. Eleanor McArver “Knowledge gained is of no real worth Mr. Raymond Fuhrer There are in every institution of learning those individuals who with quiet competence make a superb contribution to the aca- demic process. Raymond A. Fuhrer, for twelve years Chairman of the Elec- trical Engineering Technology Department, has been in the fore- front of the effort to develop programs in engineering technology designed to bridge the educational gap between the craftsman and the graduate engineer. The success of his achievement is evidenced by the widespread demand for the graduating electrical technicians in industry and by ten years of accreditation by the Engineers’ Council for Professional Development. A mature, thoughtful man of learning and broad experience, Mr. Fuhrer has an enthusiasm for his subject and rapport with his students which create an atmosphere for educational excellence. With admiration and gratitude, we dedicate this yearbook to Mr. Raymond Fuhrer. • • • An example of total sharing of both her knowledge and her self, Eleanor Moore McArver has been much more than a professor of English since she joined the Technical faculty in 1956. From representing her profession abroad under the auspices of the English-Speaking Union, to Filling in as cafeteria chef when the campus was snowed in, she has brought to all her endeavors those “plus” values which are the mark o£,a dedicated person. A woman in a man’s world of slide rules and drawing boards, Mrs. McArver has been a strong advocate of teaching the tech- nician as much eloquence as expertise in his chosen field, and numbers of students have returned to thank her for this emphasis. With respect and appreciation, we dedicate this yearbook to Mrs. Eleanor McArver. 28
