1972 REVELEER Gaston College NEXT RIGHT Rise and look around you How it will astound you Outshines every star Every mountain, sea or shore And you can see from far and near A world you’ve never seen before You can see forever and evermore By : Alan Jay Lerner 4 6 'X V. mr 10 11 ✓ a 14 15 16 innimiin 17 13 m mm iWStite 19 Memories haunt the corridors, evoking and recalling the verb “remember,” nurtured by time and season. The ghosts of dawns once felt and sunsets known continue to paint the endless portrait of which we are but small specks, reflecting light and darkness of the word “gone.” 20 The empty rooms that were our old companions look as they did — silent yet speaking — more unheard than listened to. Faces of innocence and cynical security exist as in the former days, looking but never seeing. 21 I i I I I I ______Q__________ LANES 1-2-3 FACULTY STAFF , 7 a.m. - 4 p.m. -1 XT DO NOT E JAtr or i£r ?rr r? Whether rain or shine, we’re confident that — in symbol — no clearer days may ever dawn for our Community than those on which people, seeking fulfillment and self-improvement by learning, enter Gaston College to gain knowledge, sharpen techniques, acquire skills. Lyrically, we offer you an inspirational challenge to “Rise and Look Around You” at this . . . Your College. Logically, we invite you to See It Like It is — Understand How It Serves — Share In What It Must Be. Sincerely, we appeal to your interest and concern and ask for your support. Happily, we remind you of the dividends in community well-being that follow. It’s unalterable as is the sequence of Day and Night - comprehensive education of individuals within a community J 'XUj EKHn Effiat • •:: TfkrKK ■ « ‘v Sg.Wgg TJ.IIw ♦ -' ♦ -—■— In Memory of: Mrs. Rebecca Miller Wells Carpenter People build bridges in order to escape from the islands created by their own sense of aloneness. These bridges are constructed in the dark of our own minds amid the isolation of our loneliness. Mrs. Carpenter, Director of Gaston College’s Learning Resources Center since its beginning, helped many of us to create our own beginnings by providing the light and constant caring so NEEDED to give us the courage to carry on. Any person who was so fortunate as to have known Mrs. Carpenter will attest to the fact that every book, film strip, magazine, and piece of equipment in the center was thought by her to be not her personal possession but rather on loan to her only until she could talk us into taking it into our own possession. By “owning” nothing, she had (and gave) all. 26 BOARD OF TRUSTEES J. Edward Stowe, Chairman Thomas A. Will, Vice Chairman Woodrow B. Sugg, Secretary Fred L. Smyre, Jr., Treasurer James H. Atkins Eugene A. Froneberger Earl T.Groves J. Bart Hall D. R. Mauney, Jr. Mrs. Bobbie Rowland Walter J. Newcomb Charles E. Zeigler Mr. William Craig 27 We dedicate: Mrs. Eleanor McArver “Knowledge gained is of no real worth Mr. Raymond Fuhrer There are in every institution of learning those individuals who with quiet competence make a superb contribution to the aca- demic process. Raymond A. Fuhrer, for twelve years Chairman of the Elec- trical Engineering Technology Department, has been in the fore- front of the effort to develop programs in engineering technology designed to bridge the educational gap between the craftsman and the graduate engineer. The success of his achievement is evidenced by the widespread demand for the graduating electrical technicians in industry and by ten years of accreditation by the Engineers’ Council for Professional Development. A mature, thoughtful man of learning and broad experience, Mr. Fuhrer has an enthusiasm for his subject and rapport with his students which create an atmosphere for educational excellence. With admiration and gratitude, we dedicate this yearbook to Mr. Raymond Fuhrer. • • • An example of total sharing of both her knowledge and her self, Eleanor Moore McArver has been much more than a professor of English since she joined the Technical faculty in 1956. From representing her profession abroad under the auspices of the English-Speaking Union, to Filling in as cafeteria chef when the campus was snowed in, she has brought to all her endeavors those “plus” values which are the mark o£,a dedicated person. A woman in a man’s world of slide rules and drawing boards, Mrs. McArver has been a strong advocate of teaching the tech- nician as much eloquence as expertise in his chosen field, and numbers of students have returned to thank her for this emphasis. With respect and appreciation, we dedicate this yearbook to Mrs. Eleanor McArver. 28 ■I until it becomes knowledge shared 9 V I 29 Dr. George S. McSwain, Jr. Dean of Instruction Dr. E. Chartered in 1963, Gaston College is one of the few Community Colleges in the South approved by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and also with programs approved by the Engineers’ Council for Professional Development. As an educational institution in today’s world, our purpose is to teach all people of post high school age, regardless of background and capacity, what they want to learn; to enable each individual to reach his potential of learning and productive citizenship. In the accomplishment of our purpose, businesses, professions, indus- tries, together with government, cultural and social life of the community directly benefit. The character of education at Gaston College is comprehensive — learning for the adult who cannot read or write . . . for the high school dropout who will begin again . . . the technical worker, to expand or acquire skills . . . the high school graduate who wants to pursue his college program . . . the college graduate for further study in diversified fields. Gaston College meets the requirements of its purpose through four basic divisions of curriculum, programed currently as follows: College Parallel Division; Engineering Tech- nology Division; Vocational Education; and Adult and Continuing Education Division. October, 19 Gaston College Reaches Record Enrollment Novelist Doris Betts To Open College Culture Series Fire Science ____________________ On Campus October 13 The first of Gaston College’s cultural events for the 1971-72 year will occur on Wednesday, October 7, when Mrs. Doris Betts, widely known novelist, will be on campus to address the student body and also to visit in classes during the day at the eleven o’clock lecture-discussion in the Gaston College library. Mrs. Betts will discuss the modern novel and the problems facing the novelist. She will arrive at Gaston College in time to visit in the ten o’clock English classes, and after the library discussion she will again visit with English classes. Mrs. Betts is equally well known as a short story writer and as a novelist. Among her major short story works is THE GENTLE INSURRECTION AND OTHER STORIES. Among her major novels are TALL HOUSES IN WINTER, and THE SCARLET THREAD. Her most recent novel is nearly completed and is expected to hit the book stores at Christmas of this year. A native of Statesville, North Carolina, Mrs. Betts attended the Statesville schools and worked as a correspondent for the RECORD AND LANDMARK while she was still in high school. Later she worked full-time for the newspaper in Statesville. She is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. The fiction of Mrs. Betts is set in the Piedmont section of North Carolina. TALL HOUSES IN WINTER is set in a fictional town called Stoneville, which bears a very strong resemblance to Statesville. Similarly, her other novels and short stories are drawn scene in fiction. “I’d be afraid,” she said. “If I told the truth, none of them would want to try it.” She discussed at length the hardships and problems of modern fiction writing and concluded that “You can make a life of writing but you cannot make a living by it.” Among the problems she stressed are those of very stiff competition, the fluctuation of standards and requirements, and the spreading influx of hacks as opposed to writers. Mrs. Betts is married to Lowry Betts, attorney. They now live in Sanford and Mrs. Betts teaches creative writing classes at the University of North Carolina. effort with Rowan Technical Institute, which already processes this needed equipment. This will be worked out either by sending our students to Rowan, or perhaps course instructors will come to the campus of Gaston College. It is also important to note the fact that this course has been approved so that G.I.‘s will be able to take it. No date has as yet been set for the revision of this program into the two year stage, but realities at Gaston College seem to have this way of making themselves felt rather quickly and forcefully. that while registration had been somewhat slow, indications are that the final figures would top last year’s mark. During 1970-71 Gaston enrolled 3309 full-time students. Thus far in 1971, 1671 students had been enrolled by noon Friday, according to Trammell. Dr. Jimmy Babb, dean of the Vocational Division, estimated that another 342 students would be enrolled before the end of the day. This latest figure would bring the total to 2013. Last year’s all-time high includes winter and spring quarters, as well as the fall term. students in the College Division, which is now known the Academic Division, additional 224 students w enrolled in the evening school, the Vocational Division in 19 there were 291 students, while Technical Division enrolled 1 Grand total for that year v 1662. The above figures do include students enrolled in Continuing Education Divisi which was formerly known as Adult Education Division, year’s figures showed that 7,1 were enrolled in Adult Educati (Continued on Page2) C.P, Putnam To Publish Novel By Gaston College Instructor Robert Williams of Gaston College English Department recently signed a contract with G. P Putnam’s Sons for the publication of a novel. The book, AMID ALIEN CORN, is expected to be released in hardback edition in 1972 and in paperback by Berkley Publishing Corporation in 1973. Williams describes the novel as a sort of sociological and highly symbolic delineation of the emptiness and the decay of modern Americanism. The novel is, according to Williams, “clean enough for the parents of Gaston College students, and dirty enough for the students themselves.” The title AMID ALIEN CORN, Williams explains, is derived from the story of Ruth in the Old Testament and from John Keat’s the song of the nightingale that Ruth heard as she stood in tears amid the alien corn. The major theme, then, of the novel is the tragedy of alienation. Williams says that at best, we are all total strangers. The tragedy of the modern age is that people do not know each other; they are not permitted to know each other and do not have the courage if they are permitted to know each other. Williams feels that whatever philosophy is in the novel could be found in a triangle of thoughts. One side is Jefferson’s comment that our own integrity is the only oracle given to us by heaven, and we are answerable not for the rightness but for the uprightness of o our decisions. A second side of the triangle is formed by Jonathan Swift’s observation that it is irrmo ihle to reason a nerson middle-sized southern town mill like Gastonia. The name of town is Sherman, which suggei first of all that the nation vi divided into two factions by Civil War. General Sherman ill sense divided the South, and ’5 history of America since that tis has been more and more divisii until finally each of us J compelled to live in a univeJ made up of tiny orbits which ! dependent upon each other al yet conflict with each other, that while we cannot find ident for ourselves, we can prohibit our neighbor frif finding his identity. AMID ALIEN CORN is a nol of dynamics, not ideas, but ea element of the plot is based up 'an idea that the author feels important to the Ameriri nennle.
