1968 GASTON COLLEGE GASTONIA, NORTH CAROLINA REVELEER 1968 ADMINISTRATION - FACULTY CLASSES SPORTS CLUBS FEATURES CONTENTS FOREWORD Fall, winter, spring - a year at Gaston College. A nervous Freshman, a domineering Sophomore - these are the people. For some, two years at Gaston College will prove to be a step high to success; for others it will represent failure - with a step to a greater understanding of why”? The students find an answer to age - old questions and a realization that learning is a trying thing, not easily come by. The slave buying. . . the first dance ... a good-looking date . . . a test ... a new Student Government. . . people who really care - this is Gaston College. It may be hard, this progress we are making, but nothing good was ever attained easily. One day, Gaston College will have its day; the INDIVIDUALS at Gaston College will see to this. There is no ending to this because there is no end to know- ledge or to people and their emotions. Yes, each season brings something new and unexpected to Gaston College; but “to every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven; WHAT PROFIT HATH HE THAT WORKETH IN THAT Then sing, ye birds, sing ajoyous song! 4 1 VocniiOMfl ff i U By tf POY ih y 4d •VC li« '« ■'. e [echn left fypA 4o JOUV' ft Jvt $0V i v -fo joiv • ; , liftO l V And let the young lambs bound 6 As to the tabor’s sound! This year has been no exception as we are all delighted that the Technical, Vocational, and College Parallel Divisions are now housed on one campus. This action has helped to unify our efforts and has strengthened the institution’s total program. DR. SUGG AND J. EDWARD STOWE We are particularly pleased with the personal and educational improvement each of you has made. Knowledge and skills have been upgraded, and the tools of human interaction have been positively sharpened. Hopefully you will look back on your days at Gaston College with considerable warmth and satis- faction, and 1 assure you your Alma Mater shall remain genuinely interested in your forward march through the days and years ahead. Mauney, Jr. Albert G. Myers, Jr. Fred Smyre, Jr. Dr. Thomas Will Dr. William T. Cottingham “He is a man upon whom we built an abso- lute trust.” Virginia Bill Mrs. Cottingham Sid Dan Jim Frances Dr. Cottingham DEDICATION There is in every college or university a man whose mere presence is an asset to the institution. This type of person commands both the sincere re- spect of students and the admiration of his col- leagues, and his figure on campus leads both color and quiet dignity to campus life. Such a man is Dr. William T. Cottingham, Dean of Instruction of Gaston College. Gaston College, as a community college, owes quite a lot to “Tom” Cottingham, and in this spirit we dedicate to him the 1968 REVELEER. 27 28 Milton M. But it should and must be much more than this if it is to reach and benefit its audience. The responsibilities of The Gas Light are manifold: Historian of events, judge of relevance of the news, jury to evaluate facts and opinions objectively, and public con- science to determine what needs to be magnified or suppressed. The objectives of The Gas Light are to report honestly, com- pletely, and effectively and to be heard on all matters that con- cern the college. It is within the province of another year to determine our successes and failures. News Staff: Harold Timms, David Dodd, Tim Frye, Milton McNealy, Barbara Paysour. Inside the small span of nine months, we have witnessed accreditation and the completion of our new Technical-Vocational and Administration buildings. Let us take these accomplishments as Dale Huffstetler, Feature Editor Sam Phillips, Sponsor added valuable courses in our educational cur- riculum. Even as the pages of this REVELEER turn yellow with age we will return to the 1968 year with greater understanding of these ad- ditional subjects. Some of our feelings and ideals will of course change, but the true spirit of education, knowledge, and individual learning will remain inspired because of this year at Gaston College.
