STUDENT LIFE FACULTY 2 FOREWORD College is an amazing experience, shooting sparks of surprise and joy into our memories for all the years to come. Perhaps that's why again and again we shall turn the pages of the 1967 REVELEER and know that the records and photographs of this year will once more turn a brief spotlight on the people we knew and the things we did. The private details, those that only the book of the mind can contain, we shall fill in for ourselves--all the vast multitude of good feelings and bad, the personal failures and triumphs, the small moments that stand in bold relief against the bright, glowing memory of one year. But THE REVELEER can help remind us of the work, the frustration, the success, the pleasure, and the wonder that made Gaston College important for us. SPORTS FEATURES CLUBS k Who in the heck is Beowulf? QUIET . . ROWDY . . CAREFREE . . AND GAY . . Cool it, baby! 36---36- 36! Tree of knowledge! Gaston College is, most of all, a place to work. The assignments come in ever- increasing numbers. Each week, the textbooks must be read, the problems must be solved, the papers written, and the laboratories completed. Then blue Monday comes again, and with it comes once more the work of learning. 4 Something old BUT UNDERNEATH IT ... WE WORK . . . WE WORRY . . . THROUGH TWO YEARS TO LEARN THE MEANING OF . . . Something blue. Something new . . . Something borrowed mmmm What do you mean by operator ? With the work comes the inevitable frustration of more to do and less time to do it well. As the weeks grow into months, the quizzes are scheduled and the term papers come due, and finally, the ultimate frustration of worrying through the long days and sleepless nights of final examinations, the half fear that maybe it isn't worth the effort. Smile! You're on Candid Camera! Dear Dr. Benson, I am running away . . . But the answer arrives at last in the semester grades — some, if not all, of the work and frustration have been crowned with success, perhaps even a healthy boost in quality points. For those who see beyond the last Gaston College grade report, this success stretches far into the future. After all, success has a way of breeding more success. 10 What class is this? Surprise! I knowed that one! All that Gaston College means to us, however, isnft contained between the covers of the books in the library or in the endless lecture notes that we took. For every formula or definition we recall, we remember as well a wild Watusi at the fall dance, the witches' brew and haunted house of our first Halloween carnival, a private smile from the stage at the December beauty pageant, a few good jokes in and out of the classroom, all of the big and little pleasures of a college year. Research!!! Research!!! Research!!! Do you have anything smaller? The usual, please! I can handle the chips--it’s that stuff” that worries me. Kisses sweeter than wine! Hi there, fans . . . i Would you believe 14 39-23-37? Buy in quantity (quality ?) and save. 15 We look back at Gaston College, 1966-67, with a sense of wonder that so much was accomplished—a magnificent new building a vitalized student government, an expanded program of social activities. A year of hard work, a year of some frustration and some success, a year of pleasure—and a year of wonder that so much could happen so quickly. THAT Teague really gets around! Confusion! Confusion! Confusion! S-L-E-E-P-O-L-O-G-Y! ! !! Oh, no, you don't mean I failed underwater basket-weaving 231. ACTING PRESIDENT AND DEAN OF INSTRUCTION To The Student Body: As the years pass by, our memories fil- ter out most of the daily frustrations, annoy- ances, and failures, and like a college an- nual, record and retain the gratifying expe- riences and accomplishments of any given period of our life. We hope that your days 't Gaston College will not only be associated with pleasant recollections but also with the growth of a sense of personal identity and worth, the acquisition of self discipline and confidence, and the development of skills and hosts of valued friendships with your peers, your college faculty and staff. Robert Halstead Vice President and Dean of Technical Education To the Members of the Graduating Class of 1967: You have attended Gaston College during a most eventful period. Even though you will be the first regular graduates since the col- lege became a part of the community col- lege system, this will be the second annual commencement of the college and, if the pre- vious graduates of the Gaston Technical In- stitute are included, the ninth annual com- mencement for graduates of the technical division. You came to us in the months immediately following the merger of these institutions and have been with us long enough to see the erection of the new technical-vocational building complex. Since you will be the first group to occupy these new buildings, we hope you will feel that the buildings are yours and that you will take an active interest in the college, as we will in you, during the excit- ing years ahead as you face the business of life. IN MEMORY Remember Remember me when I am gone away, Gone far away into the silent land; When you can no more hold me by the hand, Nor I half turn to go, yet turning stay. Remember me when no more day by day You tell me of our future that you plann'd: Only remember me; you understand It will be late to counsel then or pray. Yet if you should forget me for a while And afterwards remember, do not grieve: For if the darkness and corruption leave A vestige of the thoughts that once I had, Better by far you should forget and smile Than that you should remember and be sad. This book is the output of nine months of hard work, con- centration, determination and sacrifice. Within these covers is a combination of creative ideas, practical knowledge, and literary ability. This is your glance back or memory of the year 1966-67 at Gaston College and Gaston Technical Insti- tute. We hope it will prove to be a complete captivation of that year and the memories it holds for you. Additional attractions in this year's REVELEER include color pictures, enlargements of various sections, and a standard size college book. Behind each picture, caption, layout, and article is an endless combination of thought. 1 44 Harvey Parks, Co-Editor Larry Taylor, Assistant Editor SPONSORS Mr. Sam Phillips, Mr. Clyde McCants Though the production of this book involved seemingly endless hours of work, it proved to be an experience which will not be soon forgotten by members of the staff. Its suc- cess depends upon its acceptance by you and the public. This yearbook is a production of co-operative dedica- tion. It is not the single efforts of one individual. Special thanks are extended to Dale Goins, Pat Bailey, Sharon Avery, Dorothy Baker, and Becky Welch for the extra time and effort they have contributed to make this publication possible. Mr. Sam Phillips and Mr. Clyde McCants are to be commended for their advice and guidance in making this yearbook journalistically correct, unique, and comprehensive.
