♦ TECH PATHS PUBLISHED BY THE ANNUAL STAFF GASTON TECHNICAL INSTITUTE GASTONIA, NORTH CAROLINA The Campus of Gaston Technical Institute MECHANICAL and PRODUCTION The engineering technician refers to that category of supporting personnel which is most closely associated and related to the profession of engineering, both in employment and in education. The engineering technician, sometimes referred to as an engineering associate or engineering aide, requires a significant amount of manipulative skills but is primarily concerned with the application of mental skills for which the best preparation is collegiate-level instruction in mathematics, the physical sciences, communications, appropriate technical skills, and ap p r op r i a t e technical specialties. The Gaston Technical Institute has been in the fore- front of those institutions concerned with the development of accredited engineering technology programs of study for engineering technicians at the two-year technical junior college level. 2 Cn gin e erin g ELECTRONICS ELECTRICAL CIVIL 3 There is a bright future for the The student in Electronics Engineering Tech- nology gains a thorough background in the basic studies and sciences, as well as the essential spe- cialized courses in electronics. The modern lab- oratory equipment provides a comprehensive sup- plement to class instruction. Upon graduation the Electronics major finds employment offered in manufacturing, production, sales, heating, inspection, and promotion of elec- tronics equipment. There are also great oppor- tunities found in building, installation, and main- tenance of electronic devices which are essential to industry. 4 ELECTRONICS TECHNOLOGY 5 ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGY prepares 6 the student to enter varied fields of engineering The program in Electrical Engineering Technology is founded upon a carefully selected group of courses that enables the student to fill the position between the electrician and the electrical engineer. This program also offers a wide education in the commercial, residential, and industrial fields. Upon graduation the students are qualified to enter a wide variety of jobs, such as drafting, sales, supervision of installations, maintenance of power plants and other elec- trical equipment, and electrical contracting. This program is intended to pre- pare the student for vocations in the construction and trans- portation fields of engineering. Graduates are qualified to perform such duties as estimating, specification writing, surveying, inspection, or supervising with both public and private firms. The laboratory is equipped with the essential tools to offer training in methods and equipment used in the area of Civil Engineering. 8 CIVIL ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGY 9 MECHANICAL and PRODUCTION ENGINEERING The Mechanical and Production Engineering Tech- nology curriculum trains personnel to assist the engineer or the small manufacturer in all types of industry in the planning of production processes, equipment, sales, tool- ing, drafting, production of materials, and supervision of personnel. The graduate is well-trained in tool design and shop practices as well as in motion and time study. The Mechanical and Production Engineering Tech- nician must, of necessity, be a versatile person, and as a result, he is in demand in all types of industrial processes. 10 11 John T. Caldwell B.S., M.A., Ph.D. Chancellor North Carolina State of the University of North Carolina at Raleigh. Since 1945, North Carolina State University at Raleigh has operated a Technical Institute; first at Morehead City and later, in 1952, that facility was moved to Gastonia. In 1957, it was made a division of the School of Engineering of North Carolina State, un- der whose guidance it has continued to the present. The students and faculty have enjoyed our connection with North Carolina State, and it is with the greatest reluctance that we say’’Farewell” to those who have shown interest in our endeavor. The Gaston Technical Institute offers four curricula in engineering technology, each of which is accredited by the Engineers’ Council for Professional Development. ’Tm sure no human heart goes wrong That’s told ”Good-by--God bless you!” 1 2 E.
