OPPORTUNITIES AT... West Wing The West Wing houses the Civil Depart ment, Mechanical and Production Department, English Department, Drawing Labs, Civil Labs, Student Lounge and Recreation Facilities. The Administration Building contains the Director’s Office, Bookstore, Auditorium, and Cafeteria. The Machine Shops are in the lower section. Administration Building 11 GASTON TECHNICAL INSTITUTA 2 The East Wing houses the Office of the Registrar, Electronics Depart- ment, Electrical Department, Math and Physics Departments and the several laboratories for each. TECH PA THS Published By The A nnual Staff of GA STON TECHNICA L INSTITUTE 1963 A Division of North Carolina State College Operated By The Extension Division of The School of Engineering Raleigh, North Carolina tASTON I A, NORTH CAROLINA Opportunities In ELECTRONICS ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGY The program of study in Electronics Engineering Technology is designed to provide the student with a thorough back- ground in the basic studies and sciences and to provide him with the essential spec- ialized courses in the electronics area. Emphasis is upon the broad area of elec- tronics endeavor. Modern laboratory facilities provide for a comprehensive treatment of advanced electronic instruments. 4 Graduates in Electronic Engi- neering Technology are employed in manufacturing, production, testing, inspection, promotion, and sale of electronic equipment and systems. There is a bright future for graduates in this department in the building, installation, and mainte- nance of electronic devices. They are also employed widely in research laboratories. 5 Opportunities In The program in Electrical Engineer- ing Technology is founded upon a care- fully selected group of courses that will enable the graduate to enter a wide num- ber of activities such as drafting, sales, supervision of installations, maintenance of power plants and other electrical equipment, and electrical contracting. This program also equips the grad- uate with a knowledge of electrical prac- tice in the commercial, residential, and industrial fields. ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING TV nr i i , r - ' v :« ::: ■ llll TECHNOLOGY Opportunities In The program in Civil Engineering Technology is designed to prepare the stu- dent for various positions in the construc- tion and transportation fields. The graduate can perform such duties as estimating, specification writing, surveying, inspection, or supervising with both public and private firms. The laboratory is equipped with the essential tools to provide the necessary procedures used in the area of civil engi- neering. CIVIL ENGINEERING 9 Opportunities In MECHANICAL AND PRODUCTION The program of study in Mechanical and Production Engineering Technology trains personnel to assist the engineer or the small industry in the planning of production pro- cesses and equipment, tooling, supervision of personnel, sales, production of material goods, and drafting. The graduate is well- trained in tool design and shop practices as well as in motion and time study. The Mechanical and Production Engi- neering Technician must, of necessity, be a versatile person, and as a result, he is in demand in all types of industrial processes. ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGY Opportunities to grow Spiritually GASTONIA is a city of many beautiful churches. Each student can find spiritual guidance in the church of his choice, as all the major denominations are represented in the area. Many of the churches have arranged classes especially for the college students and take an active interest in them. Opportunities to grow Physically All Gaston Tech Students are members of the YMCA, which is one of the best equipped in North Caro- lina. The physical education classes meet there, and there are other activities in which the students take a part. There are several golf courses in the city which the students may use for a nominal fee, and the city park has both tennis and swimming facilities. The Catawba River nearby offers space for boating, skiing, and general outdoor recreation. I Opportunities to grow Socially Students at Gaston Tech have the opportunity to meet others in many ways socially. The Student Council sponsors social events almost every month, and the other clubs at the school have various forms of enter- tainment. The Student Nurses at Gaston Memorial also enter- tain for the students here, and other girlTs schools near- by invite them to attend the social events which they sponsor. The annual Spring Dance which the Freshman Class has for the Graduates is probably the highlight of the year socially. The school itself furnishes recreational facilities in the West Wing Basement where the students can meet others for fun and amusement. IN MEMORIAM LARRY EUGENE FREEMAN Bom: March 1941 Died: November 16, 1962 WE DEDICA TE Mr. Claudius C. Dawson The Annual Staff of Gaston Technical Institute gratefully dedicates the 1963 yearbook, Tech Paths, to Mr. Claudius C. Dawson, Chairman of the local Advisory Board. Mr. Dawson has been the champion of technical education for many years, and has given countless hours of his time to making our school one of which we can be justly proud. By this dedication, the students of Gaston Tech are able to say in a small way, ’’Thank you, Mr. Dawson, for believing in us and in our way of life.” 16 Wm John T. Caldwell B.S., M.A., Ph.D. Chancellor North Carolina State College The Gaston Technical Institute is operated by the College Extension Division of North Carolina State College at Raleigh. The academic program and staff appointments are under the control and supervision of The School of Engineering. The Gaston Technical Institute offers four curricula in engineering technology, each of which is accredited by the Engineers’ Coun- cil for Professional Development. 18 E. W.
