NINETEEN HUNDRED SIXTY-TWO GASTON TECHNICAL INSTITUTE Gaston Technical Institute is a two-year terminal school, of- fering an Associate in Science degree in four phases of tech- nology--Civil, Electrical, Electronics, and Mechanical Pro- duction. The school is a division of the School of Engineering of North Carolina State College at Raleigh, North Carolina and is oper- ated through the Extension Department of the College. Gaston Technical Institute is accredited by the Engineering Council for Professional Development. This book tells the story of Gaston Tech from the time a stu- dent enters until he graduates. We hope you will find some scenes to interest you as we tell our story in pictures. 3 Probably the first thing seen as a new student arrives is our school sign, erected by the student council in 1960. Freshman Orientation. The early days of college As the student arrives, he seems to be moving for a lifetime instead students get to know each other as well as learning of for two years ! The Y.M.C.A. is the place where the new students spend much time in recreation. Entrance Test. All new students spend part of the time taking tests. Ee spent in meetings such as this where the new out the school itself. LABOR AND Student Assembly is held each Thursday. It is here that the students learn about various school activities. Announcements are made and an invited speaker is generally present. Study time. This is a new experience for many students. The establishment of a study plan is necessary to achieve success Drugstore - Moss’s has been the student center for years, and many happy ’’breaks are spent here. 6 RECREATION Ping-Pong and Pool tables are in the Rec Rooms in the west wing. These are favorite spots during lunch and after classes. Testbooks and Supplies. These are the Nemises of most students; achievement is the result of constant use. 7 Physics Laboratory. This is one of the basic courses and many hours are spent here. iCH'pl 225E] English Composition. English is also one of the basic studies. The student learns communicative skills which will be invalu- able to him in his future work. 8 Mathematics Class. Another of the basic studies and perhaps the most important one for a technician. Shop. Each student spends some time here learning how to use his hands in a profes- sional way. Drawing Laboratory. Two classes a week are given to engineering drawing. Here the student learns graphic skills which are ne- cessary to his specialization. 9 Civil Laboratory. Surveying students use field practice to be come familiar with the use and application of surveying in struments and techniques. Electrical Laboratory. The main scope of this lab is to fa- miliarize the students with the applications and functions of electrical machines. SENIOR LABS Electronics Laboratory. The electronic students put to use their knowledge of tubes and electric circuits by building amplifiers, oscillators, and many other various projects. Mechanical and Production Laboratory. Students must learn to choose the most economical machine, tool, jig, or fixture; which would be used in the manufacture of a particular part. STUDENT AFFAIRS Open House comes each spring when the public is invited to inspect the school and see the ’’proof of the pudding”. Awards Day. Near the end of the school term, students are awarded gifts for proficiency in many areas of endeavor. Christmas Dance. This is the highlight of the Fall Semester. It sets the pace for the holiday season. Junior-Senior Dance. Each spring the Freshmen have a gala ball for the Seniors. This is usually the largest party of the year. Student Council This is a government of the students, by the students and for the students few of the people who made this book possible f Most of the supplies are purchased from the school bookstore The library, unlike a public library, is filled mostly with technical books.
