THE EPOCH MANUAL TRAINING During the past few years Manual Training has become a very popular subject in the lias City Schools. As a result of so much interest being mani- fested in the subject much new equipment has been added. Three power machines have been added which enables pupils to turn out a much better grade of work and also much more work. Of the three power machines. the jointer or hand planes were First added. This machine squares or joints edges of boards as well as trues the surfaces. The next to be added was the circular saw. This is very valuable in squaring material. Another important feature of this machine is the dado saw which enables one to cut grooves across the material. This may also be used in making various joints. The next machine to be added was the band saw. This machine was found to be very populas among the students as they were able to make projects requiring irregulai cuttings. This machine is-used in cutting all irregular curves. These curves are used as an added attraction getting away from the straight line type of work. In addition to the above machines several so-called bench tools have been purchased such as chisels, bits, saws, spoke shaves, rulers, and many other such tools. ' f :Xt the present tfme we have about eighty students enrolled in the Manual Training Department. As far as possible, the work is organized on a project basis with the fol lowing as some of the objectives, namely: To coordinate the mental and mus- cular powers. To develop a realization of the necessity for accuracy. To partially satisfy the motor tendencies of the adolescent boy. To give the boy a series of varied experiences such as will assist in finding his vocation. To give the pupils experience in the use and care of woodworking tools. To learn through experience the use, kind and qualities of woodworking tools, and materials.
