T H E E P O C H 5: 51 CLASS PRGPI-IECY The other evening, I was very sleepy: so I went to bed before supper Later I awoke very hungry: so I decided to get something to eat. I came down stairs, and all I could find was some sauer kraut and mince pie. l finished my midnight lunch with a malted 1nilk and a pickle. I then felt as if I had received a surliciency and retired again. Iialling asleep, I soon found myself twenty-five years ahead of time. I was in New York in the Metropolitan Opera Company. I was walking down Broadway and thought I recognized a familiar face, and who was it but the former Ida Lee Fish with her daughter who resembled her identically. She said her son, only nineteen. was following in the footsteps of her husband as a violinist. He was in Chicago giving a concert at that time. That evening, Ida Lee and I went to dinner at the Ritz and while eating, whom did we see coming toward us but two very handsome gentlemen, whom we recognized as Halter l'ratt and Ralph Groves lformerly Mutt and lliddie l and two young ladies, neither of whom we knew. XYe later learned that Mutt and Biddie had never been able to settle down and were still looking for one who would suit them. They said that they had been in Cincinnati a week before and had seen Geraldine Stevens. She had married a millionaire and was enjoying all the luxuries of life. They had also seen Geneva Walker and her husband just entering a 'theatre but were unable to talk to them. Since Mutt and Biddie had been traveling extensively we were glad to hear what they knew. Mutt said that Bucky Day was following his father's footsteps. and was Mayor of St. Louis. Darrow I'earson and Donald Simons we1'e both basketball coaches and were great successes. Ida Lee said while she was visiting her son she saw Flames lformerly Bustoffil and Juanita lI-Ielmsl Brown in Chicago. james was the president of a large chain of grocery stores, and was very happy. Douglas Iden was last seen in Los Angeles, preparing for a trip to China where he was going to try to promote education. After so much talking, it was getting late: so I bade adieu and left to get ready for my appearance that evening. planning to see them after the opera performance. 1 9 2 9 Page nineteen

T H E E P O C H i i Leaving, I stopped in front of a very up-to-date establishment on Ififth Avenue, and going inside, I inet Donna Simons who was designing dresses and was becoming famous. I told her of those of who-m I had heard, and she said Zora XYilson and IYilma Mcljherron were both married and had gone abroad. XYhen leaving the opera, I again met Ida Lee, her husband, Mutt. and Riddle, and we went to Ida I,ee's home, very up-to-date and beautiful, to talk over the old times. James Spurgeon, who had planned to be a bank robber, but had taken up aviation instead, had been very successful in carry- ing mail across the Atlantic. I picked up a New York paper and found that IYilliam John XYilliams had just made a great invention, and we were all surprised at that. I left New York the next day to visit friends in Boston, Massachusetts. IYhile I was there. I saw Margaret and XYillard Oliver. t1Irs. Oliver formerly was Margaret Brownj and they recognized me immediately. They said that they had lost all account of the class since graduation. As I was touring, 1uy next stop from Iloston was Buffalo, N. Y., and there I saw Mildred Jeffrey, who was teaching school. I though I was rather lucl'v in Oettinn' in touch with so many' members of the former class C X. e- 6 ' . of 'ml I left the east and went south. I met no one whom I really was intimate with until I reached Tampa, Florida, and there I met Harold Pratt, who owned several large modern garages in Florida, besides many shares of stock in land. He said that ,Iohn Brown and Jim Glaze were also in Elorida, and were great architects.-They had gone into business together. I told I rattie I was leaving that evening for New Orleans. He said I might visit IYilbur Chapman, as he was in New Qrleans, owned many acres of land, and was becoming wealthy. -Xt New Orleans, I met Ruth Yoris and Ruby Robbins who were both teaching school there. I began recalling my acquaintances in my Senior year and I remembered I had not found any trace of my two best chums, Esther Grifiin and Kath- leen Hayworth. I always asked about them and nnally, while I was at San lfrancisco, about a month later. I saw Esther and Joe. now her husband, and they seemed very happy indeed. I asked her about Kathleen, and Esther said Kathleen was married and lived in IYashington, IJ, C., at that time. as Merril fbetter known in school days as Scoop 5 was a Congressman, tkof course, that case was always known to be serious! 1 9 2 9 Page t'lU67'lffL,Y
