Cheerleaders Ruth Jean Betty Elaine Virginia The boys participating in at-hletics chose Jean Reihe, Ruth Peden, Betty Gordon and Virginia Van Steenberg to lead the cheering at the year's inter-school contests. These girls served for the football season and Elaine Benner replaced Jean Reihe during the basketball season. Valley-Ball Gary High athletes made quite a bit of use of volley-ball as a conditioner throughout the year. In early spring Coach Christiansen divided the boys into three teams for a series of volley-ball games. Teams X, Y, and Z, were led by John Banwart-h, Raymond Eng, and Gus Van Steenberg, respectively. Ban1varth's team was determined winner of the most games out of 25 played and so was awarded the ice-cream cone treat given by the coach, Track The weatherman tried hard to dampen the spirits of the track boys but practice went on despite constant rainy weather. A Deuel county 'track meet was arranged, postponed, re-scheduled, and postponed a second time, because of the inclement weather. A third date was set for May 15, and the following boys from Gary were entered: In the Weights, shot-put and discus: Robert Burns, John Banwarth, Harold Brevik, Alfred Nelson. In the Jumps: broad and hig-h: Gus Van Steenberg, Don Cole, Raymond Eng. In the Pole Vault: Raymond Eng, Don Cole. In the Dashesg 100-yd, 220-yd, 880-yd.: Don Cole, Gus Van Steenberg, Robert Burns. This was the first season Gary High School has had track for several years. Mr. Christianson coached the boys in the events. 14
