Combining the shipboard areas of deck, communications, and navigation, Shlp's Control Department comes closest to the original spirit of the days of wooden ships and iron men. Our days sailing the waters of the Persian Gulf required tireless dedication of each and every processing unprecedented volumes of message traffic, SC-3 division flight deck personnel la- bored day and night to land and launch aircraft. The auartermaster gang safely navigated us through some of the most dangerous waters on earth, and the signalmen vigilantly searched for mines, when not engaged in providing visual communications with merchantmen and war- ships from all over the world. Last but not least. were the dedicated bridge watchstanders and Iookouts whose remarkable professionalism and efficiency ensured our safety from watch to watch. The essential service provided by Shlp's Con- trol personnel during each evolution won the respect of their shipmates, and has never been previously equaled.
