Manama, The capiTal of Bahrain, was a Thriving modern ciTy wiTh an efhnically diverse populaTion. The siTe of if dozens of new hoTeis and high rise buildings, Manama sTill conTains numerous examples of classic moslem 5 archiTecTure in The form of many new and old mosques. There was no wanTing however of The TradiTional ffg Arabic dress. Cab drivers and millionaires alike could be seen everywhere wearing The loose flowing ara- bic head gear and jalaba. BuT Bahrain was more Than jusT a place To go sighTseeing or shopping, iT meanT home as well. The few sTops There allowed us To call home and find 'ouT abouT evenfs ouTside of The Gulf. IT was a safe haven where mosT of us felT we could escape The ever presenT ThreaT in The Gulf. Bahrain was The cenTer of our Persian Gulf universe, iT was our friend, and as far as we American sailors were concerned iT was The undispuTed capiTal of Wally World.
