Also in August, pneumonia ended the seven-decade-long career of Julius Henry (Groucho) Marx at 86. Groucho began in vaudeville, starred in several movies and hosted radio and T.V. shows You Bet Your Life. In September, President Carter and Omar Torrijos signed the new Panama Canal treaties, assuring Panama control by 1999 and guaranteeing neutrality of the waterway thereafter.
