New Modern Math Baffles Students, Rita Dresser, Sharon Coyer, and Steven Treesh listen as Yogi Carpenter explains a phase of modern math. Cossettee Kearns explains a geometric theorem to members of the sophomore geometry class. This was the year that the math department was revised. Modern math was introduced throughout the school system. Students began to work in bases, use new symbols, and to approach math with a new outlook. The math books had the appearance of literature books in¬ stead of their traditional appear¬ ance . Students have a choice of study¬ ing math on the academic level geared for the college-bound stu¬ dent or practical math intended for those who do not plan to continue their education beyond high school. Speech, composition, English literature, journalism, and basic grammar are subjects offered, Business English, an addition to the English department, was offered to high school students this year. This course emphasized the grammar necessary for those interested in office work. In-class activities such as plays and other dramatic presentations added interest. Enacting the journeys of Canterbury Tales are: the knight, Craig Thorne; the yeoman, Fern Dame; and the prioress, Tina Berg. Carefully preparing for an experiment in senior high science is Marianne Caprino. As our society becomes more and more com¬ plex, the study of science gains in importance. Each year first year biology students gain a new understanding of what life is. The physics stu¬ dents renew the study of basic principles . Young chemists once again are exposed to the elements that compose our environment. Through our scientific studies we are introduced into a fascinat¬ ing and exciting realm of knowledge .
