PAGE 14 CLASS HISTORY 1952 a year to remember for our noble class numbering 65 was begln mng our hlgh school career Many events have come to pass smce we entered the portals of GHS In our freshman year we elected Stanley Mlles presldent Lee Mlller vlce presldent John R Coleman sec letary treasurer and Barbara Mack l1n and Johnny Barr student councrl Our class sponsors were Mrs Hazel Pullman and Raymond Meyer There were elght new teachers Walter E Myers supermtendent of schools P J Isaacson prmcxpal Mlss Mary Flnk MISS La Verne Kllngen berg Mlss Martha Adams Elmon Vel v1ck Gene Bell and Wayne Sprmger Fourteen of our brave boys tramped out to the grldxron every evemng They played only one game and that was wlth Paola Early ln the game Garland Haynes was lnjured and the boys belng a httle too cautlous after the xnjury lost the game 53 to 0 Cheenng durxng our sports events were led by our f1ve frosh cheerlead ers Deanna Baker Mary Lou Ather ly Nancy Knauss Sharl Lee Wllson and Sandra Stevens Stanley Mlles and Patty McCalla were our attendants to the Klng and Queen We had lots of talent ln our ranks and two muslc ensembles were formed from our class The glrls quartet Mary Lou Atherly and Patty McCal 1 and the boys sextette Jack Knouse James Thomas John R Cole man Rlchard Kltterman Johnny Barr and Stanley Mlles Twenty seven frosh lads tried thelr sklll at basketball We were playing stlff competltxon and won 2 and lost 5 Garnett was host to the dlstrlct tournament and we recelved second Commg of the Kmg was our beau txful Chrlstmas Cantata Jack Knouse and Patty McCalla were the only two people ln our class that were able to wr 1te enough to be come cub reporters A blg event of the year was our assembly The program consisted of a Sklt Bad Manners at the Movles Partxclpants were Jeanne Mace Patty McCalla Nancy Knauss Deanna Bak er and Mary Lou Atherly The fresh man glrls glee club sang The Moon and The Llttle Man ln the Woods There were two plano solos by Mary Evs bank and John R Coleman George Sayers gave a readlng The glrls quartet sang Allce Blue Gown and Prayer Perfect And the boys sex tette sang It s Me and Am t That A Shame Only elght of our number stud1ed hard enough to make the Honor Roll Out for track were twenty eight freshmen But out of all the talent we had only one was able to letter our star mller, Ronald Wellman We thought we were old hands at the busmess when September 1953 rolled around and lt was tlme to start our sophomore year of hlgh school Our class enrollment had fallen to 61 We lost Mary Loulse Atherly 'Vlary Carey Robert Cole Donna Has text Ronald Jell1son Charles Mc Cleary and Marllyn W1lk1nson But our ranks were mcreased wlth the addltlon of Ruby Borth Judy Bruce and George Tush Rxta Coppenbarger was elected class prasldent Johnny Barr vlce presl dent Eugene Krysztof secretary treasurer and Nancy Knauss and R1chard Kxtterman student councll Mlss Martha Adams and Earl Dean were our class sponsors We had three new teachers Miss Letha Hlldebrand B E Marshall and Earl Dean Our class seemed to have the talent muslcwlse for fourteen of us were IH a cappella and exght were ln modern chorale The football squad boasted seven teen sophomores We werent too happy about our Freshman Sopho more games for we chalked up no w1ns and two defeats The Hlgh School band marched ln October at Band Day at Kansas Um verslty Eugene Krysztof and Deanna Baker Stanley Mlles was the only repre sentatlve from our class to go to the H1 Y Model Leglslature at To peka SIX from our ranks made the bas ketball squad Garnett fared well 1n thls sport wmnlng the dlstrlct tournament and takxng second place at the reglonals Nancy Knauss Patty McCalla and Stanley M1les were chosen to be mem bers of the Emporla Youth Symphony Thls year we had only f1ve on the Honor Roll Several thmgs took place duung thxs year for the flrst tlme Garnett Hlgh School was heard over the a1r waves every VVednesday for flfteen mmutes on statlon KOFO Everyone had to take semester exams We had a Drlver Road e 0 A Natlonal Guard un1t was belng orgamzed at Garnett takxng enhstments 1n March Hlgh School Day was held for the fxrst tlme for our xncommg freshmen The flrst Sophomore Talent Show was held on Aprll Fools Day Elghteen of our fleet footed boys flred out to the track every nlght Garnett took second 1n the Trl Valley League Track Meet at Eureka Agaln our only letterman was Ron ald Wellman Our Sophomore Assembly consxsted HIGH SCHOOL TIMES 56 of two sklts H1llb1lly Weddmg and The Adventures of Dmrty Dan John ny Barr sang a vocal solo durmg the mtermlsslon Patty McCalla won a first rating on her clarmet solo at the state muslc contest Our second blg year of hlgh school was fll'llShBd 1954 1955 We were flnally upper classmen and we had the world on a strmg Our class had shrunk agam and now we boasted only 55 Lee Mlller was our presldent Ron ald Myers vxce presldent Eugene Krysztof secretary state IRDC conven tlon at Emporla Jerry Lmeback was elected state secretary Garnett had an unusual year at sports ln that they won second place trophy 1n the league for every sport We had slxteen boys out for football The B team was able to Wm thelr game wlth Yates Center We were and fol the flrst tlme we had more than one letterman George Tush Eugene Krysztof Gene Young Char les Holmes Rlchard
