The first blemish to the Rams record came from the hands of Wake Forest as the determined Red Devils fought to a 13-13 deadlock. But the following week, Garner, on the strength of Tommy Simmons' long runs, bounced back with a 14-12 victory over Smithfield in another close game. In their most impressive win of the season, the Rams readied them- selves for the game with Cary the following week by rolling over the helpless Fuquay Falcons 20-6. Gerry Beamon scored on the opening kickoff, and afterwards the visitors never came close. After this victory and through the following week, one of the most ex- tensive pep rallies inthe school's history was held to ready the boys for the important game with the rival White Imps. Garner met Cary on November 12 in agame that would decide the con- ference championship. The Rams fought hard to preserve their undefeated record but a stubborn Cary offense prevailed. The Rams lost 27-0 to close an excellent 8-1-1 record.

Rams In Action Garner High School launched its final year in Class 2-A competitionwithanon-conference 14-7 victory over 3-A Southern Durham. Both teams were a little sluggish as expected for the first game. The opening victory over the 3-A team brightened prospects for this year and future years when the school moves up to 3-A competition. David Daughtry's heroics provided the deciding factor in the second game of the season as Garner nipped Clayton 14-12 in an exciting game. Apex became the third team to fall to the Rams, who won 7-0 due to a brilliant goal line stand in the final minute. Garner defeated Selma 25-12 to remain unbeaten, and then shifted its sights to the Homecoming contestwith Millbrook. And with its finest show- ing of the year, the team defeated Millbrook 19-6 for its first victory over the Wildcats in three years. In a thriller, the Blue Rams made it six straight and took over first place in the conference witha 13-12 victory over Spunky Benson. The power of Steve Davis' foot provided the winning margin on a point-after-touch- down kick.
