While driving home from school in November of 1954, ,Terry Zrostlik and Vincent Buzicky tragically lost their lives in a fatal accident. Yet though they are not present with us in these final days, we take heart in knowing that their lives have not ended. For we are assured that there is life beyond the life we know on earth. Therefore, in memory of these who for a time are separated from us, we, the class of 1956, dedicate our annual to .Terry Zrostlik and Vincent Buzicky. So oft the sorrowing cry: Tell us, dear Lord, just why Beauty and youth must die? Why keep them, their courage gone, Broken and blear and wan, Blunderingly stumbling on ? Groping for answer I Chance this as His reply: Not all are fit to die! E. A. Guest - 1-yi HDIHIIIISTRHTIUH V' E 'Sn' f 0 N6 , B.. Garner looked fairly good in the first game by holding an extremely strong Eagle Grove team to an eight point margin. The second game we played Northwood, the Conference Champs, and the score was Northwood 12, and Garner O. After that game the Cardinals went into a slump until the highlite of the season when Garner beat Lake Mills by a two touchdown favorite. Lack of size, speed, and experience accounted for Garner usually coming out on the short end of the score, The acting captains for the 1955 season were J' im Martindale and John Smith, both seniors. ff FRESH-SOPH FGOTBALL FIRST ROW, Left to Right: Larry Paulson, Larry Bell, Roger Gast, Tom Stille, Ivan Hull, ,Tack Butz, Harley Greiman, Leo Hadacek, SECOND ROW: Alvin Hrubes, Marlyn Rhine, Bob Rock- wood, Larry Esk,JoePring1e,JerryJe1ik, THIRD ROW: ,Tim Deibler, Jim Grieman, John Brooks, Harry Fleming, Marvin Cummins. The 1955-56 basketball season for Garner wasn't as successful as some past teams, but the boys on this year's team had a lot of fight and spirit. With every team we met, we went out with determination to beat them, The biggest upset of the year for Garner was beating state tournament contender, Hayfield in the County Tournament. Garner faced Klemme in the finals of the county, but just didn't have it that night and had to be satisfied for runner-up in the county, Garner placed fifth in the standings of the North Iowa Conference, The Cardinals also were beaten by Forest City in the sectional tournament to end the season, This year we were again coached by Loyal Moore who did another fine job with the boys. Both girls had been told not to talk to strange men, but you know young girls, it goes in one ear and out the other. On the ship, Emily and Cornelia met several young American boys and two annoying English girls and Emily nearly drowns a man. The last part of the play takes place in the hotel room of a hotel in Paris, B There are escapades with bedbugs and many other things but in spite of all this it ended very happy for both girls. In a dark room that has not been changed since her father died Victoria goes through her cheerless routine with cruel re- gularity. She is more cruel than ever just now just because Rip is marrying a young lady who is not of his social station, and Victoria senses a threat to the integrity of the Van Bret fortune. How Victoria tortures the bride with studied austerity and finally tries to murder her is the malevolent burden of the play. We received the added help of Dorothy Oudekerk and halfway through--Larry Johnson. But we lost three assets: Art Gethman, Don Moffat, and Elaine Reichardt. We're getting excited because we're almost to the end. This was a very difficult question and Jim Martindale and Larry Cummins volunteered tohelp us out. However, Mike Becker, Vince Buzicky, Mickey Pazour, Jerry Zrostlik, and Dorothy Streyle left us. We succeeded in winning for the eleventh time. This is the final week and as the question draws nearer we are very excited, nervous, and happy. Bette Ann Arnold and Beulah Matz could not be with us, but we did acquire a new contestant, Elmer Reicherts. We've answered our final question and have been awarded 364,000.00--our Diplomas. We know our diplomas are worth much more than 364,000,005 and that we couldn't have been awarded them without the help of our experts-our teachers, We'll use the education we've acquired to be achallenge for tomorrow. WILL We, the senior class of the town of Garner, county disposing mind and memory, and knowing the uncertainty of clare this our last will and testament. May 11, 1956. Kay leaves her wild night life with Larry Cummins to Sharon West, Alan leaves his party tactics to Ivan Hull, Signed , Class of 1956 PROPHECY Dear Diary, It sure is a small world, Today I either read about or talked to every member ofmy class, the class of 1956. It, is Saturday but Ihada lot ofrunning around to do so I called a cab. Since I was in a hurry, they sent me their fastest cab driver, Larry Cummins. We recognized each other and started to talk about old times. As we zipped down the street, I caught sight of what I thought was a parade. It actually wasn't a parade. It was the former Daren Sue Goll, Kathy Hard and Barbara Hughes taking their children shopping. They were just walking past that famous hat store owned and operated by Buzz Byers. I guess he had so many hats he opened a store. I turned on the radio just in time tocatch Edwin Hrube's newscast. Ed was talking about that famous actor Dean Cataldo. He still has trouble with his love scenes. In the sports news it seems that Larry Johnson has just been elected captain of the Cleveland Browns football team. His coach is Eldon Gjerde, I guess Eldon couldn't make the team but he had so much pull with team owner Chuck Greiman that Chuck let Eldon coach, Bill Noble just set a fishing record, He was the first left handed person to catcha two pound sardine on a live bait in the light of the moon. It must have really been something! The news just finished and here I am at my office. The first thing I did was buy a paper. I see by the headlines that Craig Lamp is running for vice-president again. He would run for president but that is to hard. Thereis the editorial. I'll have to read it sometime. Sandra Hollatz always did write such good editorials. I see by the paper that Marilyn Romp, the expert on etiquette, is in town. When asked if she thought it proper for nice young girls to hold men's hands, she replied, Nowadays nice girls have to hold men's hands. The paper also interviewed Bill Butz, owner of that fabulous string of camera shops. Bill remarked that he had some bad luck lately. His chauffeur ran off without his wife. Here's an article about a couple of farmers, Ron Formanek and Phil Boehnke. They were the first to raise 350 bushels of corn per acre. They said they couldn't have done it without the help of their Agriculture instructor, Mr. Brady. Oh, here is a picture of Lloyd Nedved operating some equipment at the atomic plant. He says if things work out he can really go places. The ads are usually interesting. Her is one, Gain weight the easy way by visiting Dorothy Oudekerk's salon today, For good values in used cars, visit Hones John Smith, He will give you quick service, After all, he is only in town for 24 hours. If your husband doesn't take you out any more, visit Shirley Kargas's beauty shop. Results guaranteed! Wife treating you like a rag mop? Visit Bob Krals Barber Shop, lguess Bob is taking his job seriously and is trying out for the Perry Como show, After I was through with the paper I decided to phone up the local Ford Garage owned by Lee Nielsen. My telephone operator was none other than Emma Lou Gatchel. I asked for infor- mation since I didn't know the number. The information operator was Mildred Nedved. The Ford Company secretary, Sharon Doll, said that General Manager, Marge Hejlik, wasn't in yet so I said I'd phone back later. It was time for me to go to my appointment with the doctor, Jim Martindale. He took his part in the Senior Class play seriously. Head nurses Roberta Haan and Sue Haberkamp said he wasn't in yet so I left, I decided that I might just as well finish the morning up right and visit a dentist's office for a check up, The dental technician, Ann Berge, told me that the dentist Jean Baggs was just out of college. I would be her first patient, Naturally, I left! I called a cab to take me someplace for dinner. Who should the driver be but Jerry Revland. I guess he owns a whole string of Cadillac Cabs. I saw a service station owned by Elmer Reicherts and decided to eat there, It was one of those service stations-dinner combinations. You know, the ones, Eat Here and Get Gas. The waitress who took my order was none other than Joan Baumgartner. The food was pretty good so I went back to congratulate the cook, The cook was Carolyn Hoeft. She certainly learned her Home Economics. I decided to walk uptown and do a little shopping. The first place I stopped was the Rayhons Record Shop owned and operated by Darlene and Teresa Rayhons. I just had to get that record of Muskrat Ramble as done by Rose Meleny. It is number 2 on the hit parade. The customer right behind me was Professor Tom Kelly of P.U. University. He really digs those crazy symphonies. He bought the fifth movement of the Sonata as played by the New York Symphonic Orchastra and conducted by Mary Ann Evans. The afternoon edition of the paper was out solbought one from newsboy, Joe Nielsen. I guess he is working his way through college, Here is a picture of Carol Tlach. She is the featured bagpipe tooter for the Scottish Highlanders Band of Iowa University, The annual convention of the Lonely Hearts Club, is in town again, I see by the paper that the new officers this year are as follows: Alan Wille--Presidentg Emily Smidt--Vice-Presidentg and Treasurer--Marcia Tice, In.her address to the Lonely Hearts Club, Kay Whitney, Broadway Columnist, remarked that the club certainly has done hera lot of good. The paper also informed me that Gary lformanek is now rolling in money, He just won the 364,000 question, What a Brain!! It certainly has been a fine day. I think after supper I'1l drop in at the Moose Club. I hear Wayne Meyer has just been elected president, f GOOD - LUCK le x . L f,,1f,.a Lf 757 ,- K 'Q' - Q 1 .
