LITE A R Y WHAT A DAY! The halls were nearly empty as I dashed into my class. I headed straight for my desk and slid noisily into the seat. I had loads of books on my desk so 1 took all but one and shoved them underneath. And then — oh horrors — I heard a crash that echoed and re-echoed through the room. It seems there had been no desk under- neath. Clumsy of me. I couldn ' t bear to look at the teacher so I reached down and picked them up slowly. The person in front of me squirmed, and it was strangely quiet. 1 thought I had caused enough trouble. I stuck my 4-period-old gum un- derneath the desk to join its two or three dozen neighbors of all sizes, flavors, and brands. As 1 came shooting up with my books my head hit the hard wood with a bang and a buzzing murmur swept over the class. Every- thing was pin then purple — then black. When I woke up 1 was lying in the principal ' s office. A strange woman was bending over me. She smiled. " Are you feeling better? I didn ' t know quite what to do when you fainted in my class — . " " Your class? " I squeaked weakly. " Yes. I was substituting for your regular teacher. " I guess I passed out again. But DARN, I wish I ' d saved my gum. FOR OUR FLAG There ' s a flag that flies above us. It ' s the symbol of our land And for that flag that flies above us. We proudly take our stand. We took our stand in ' 76, And again in the Civil War, We ' ve taken our stand many other tirnes, And we ' ll take it for evermore. " SUNNY " CALIFORNIA Shining rain drops, pitter patter. Oh, my goodness, what ' s the matter? California ' s lost her sun. The Chamber of Commerce is on the run. The track meet was to have been this week. But what did the sky do? It sprung a leak. REPORT CARDS Time for report cards is almost here. Before I get mine, I shudder with fear. When the teacher starts passing them out to the class. It seems like mine is always the last. If it ' s a good one, I ' m filled with glee. But if it ' s a bad one, it ' s too bad for me. No movies, no sodas, nor anything nice. For all of our sins, we must pay a price. Every six weeks I go through this trial. Thank goodness, it only comes once in a while.
